I had many quads in my day. I need something for a 5 day hunting trip coming up and couldn't justify spending the money on a quad so I found a cheaper solution. I just purchased a 1984 200es. It even came with the original cover. It ran ok when I first picked it up. It idled a little rough. This weekend I cleaned the carbs and jets, changed engine and gear oil, cleaned the air filter, put 2 new Mud Lite tires on the rear, adjust the clutch and cam chain. Seems to be running well. The only thing I dont have working right now is the brake light. I'm horrible with electrical. I changed the bulb yesterday hoping that was the problem but no dice. Guess I'll have to learn as I go this week. I'd really like to get it working.

Update. I added a gun rack lastnight. Seems to be pretty solid. Thinking of adding moose dual zone hand warmers. Anyone know the best way to wire them up? Right to the battery or splice into the accessory plug? Is that plug only live when the key is on?

Welcome! That one is in great shape! Congrats on the 200es, that was the first one I owned. If i can help at all I will do what I can. I'm in the process of fixing up a new to me 250sx at the moment but I can always take a peek at the 200es if you have other questions.

For the tail light problem, the brown wire goes all the way up to the handle bars, the green wire is a frame ground. Check if there is a connection all the way though the harness on the brown wire, and check if the green wire has connection to a bare metal ground (like the engine). If both check out, either it is in the light switch or maybe the new bulb is bad, or even the socket?

For the hand grip warmers, you could disconnect the aux plug from the harness and use bullet connecters to hook it up. I think you need one female and one male, maybe you can luck out and find hand grip wamers with the connectors already on it :).

How hard was it to adjust the valves and can chain? I need to.do that to mine

For the valves, you need a feeler gauge, but besides that pretty easy. The timing chain you just loosen up a bolt and let it tighten up on it's own.

Service manual is a good idea to download so you can see the exact steps and photos -> http://www.atcmanuals.info/

Thanks for the tips guys. Fixed the tail light problem. Cut out the male/female connectors. They were badly corroded. Just put in new wire without connectors and works like charm. Purchased new throttle and rear brake cables yesterday. I think I need rear shoes. Cable works fine but barely any brakes. I'm going to assuming they are the original shoes and probably not much left to them. Guess I'll have to order some this week.
