How rough of condition can the plastic be before sanding and polishing

Well I have been busy have my 84 200 es engine top end rebuilt and the electrical fixed and its street legal and licensed I have 2 sets of plastic and want to polish them They are sunfaded and what I would describe as plastic rot it is white and flaking kind of will this sand or will I do damage trying to make this nice thanks for the advice mike

you sand it off, start like 80 grit and work your way down. I did it with my KX. see before and after. you can also use steel wool and break fluid...it kinda comes out nicer with less sanding scratches.
