86 big red carb needs cleaning can some one tell me how to remove it ?? I removed the air intake box & hoses but what is the next step ? It's been sitting for a couple of years so im afraid to try & start it without cleaning it. The throttle cable seems to be gummed up & sticking.

Pull the carb out of the intake boot then unscrew the carb from the cable.

Loosen the choke cable nut, doing your best not to strip the plastic. If it is loose and won't pull out,you need to start soaking it inside the carb with your favorite penetrant. If you search Flyingw's post for carb tutorials, you will then know everything there is to know about these carbs. Good luck ! ..Here you go. This took a LOT of time to do,and believe me, it is the Bible to doing these carbs. You won't have to go this in depth ,,,hopefully lol.. Here ya go :)

Thank you very much atc007 for the carb info. The nut is loose on the choke but I wasn't sure how to remove it. I didn't want to break anything. So the choke cable pulls out from the carb im going out to try this. Thanks a lot !!

Well, hopefully lol. Usually, the choke barrel will be set up in the bore of the carb, which becomes a mess. IF the choke barrel pulls out with your cable, all in the world is good. If not, soak it . 9 times out of 10. You will end up pulling the cable out"spreading open" the choke barrel, then working at it at the bench.. Hope all goes well.

Well the plastic nut broke off flush with the barrel ! Still wont come out , so I put a few drops of transmission fluid under the nut. I will try tomorrow afternoon again. Thanks again !!

If you cant get the choke barrel out, don't force it. Take the carb off with the choke cable attached and send it to me. I've become pretty good at getting those out. You don't want to damage the bore.

You can get the choke barrel, plastic fitting, and boot on Ebay new for about 25 bucks. Might as well get a new cable too.
