What a week, smoking hot one day with bugs so bad you could hardly breath, to rain/sleet, wet snow and -7C temps in the morning. We didn't know what to expect. Only one bull and one cow were spotted during the week after countless miles paddling the river. Finally on the last day this fine bull came out grunting as we were down to our last 2 hours on the river and was taken within 100 meters by my son, samjp22. Unfortunately it expired in the river and it took two hours to winch it out. We ended up having a camp out beside it due to losing light and not being able to make it down river safely. Were finally home and exhausted but happy we came home with at least one.

Wow that is some dedication to the hunt! Congrats on getting one. My first thoughts on shooting a moose would be...what the heck do I do with it?!

Those are the hunts you'll never forget.

I would like to go up north and try my hand at an elk. A moose Is a TON of work to process and get out of the bush. But all that meat, I would be in heaven.

You bet we did Chop. The only difference this time is that another bull didn't decide too visit us at 1 in the AM looking for a fight. We still slept in shifts with the 30-30 at the ready. Felt like I was in the military again, lol.

I haven't taken an elk since 1991. If it's on your list, I'd say go for it Ghost. Time doesn't stand still for no one. If we actually focused on the work we would probably quit, lol. We had a second canoe come in the morning to help pack out; too much for one. Our hunting partner radioed us after we missed our pick up time at last light. We just dropped 450 lbs of meat off at the butchers. and that didn't include the neck, one rib cage and the front shoulder meat and bones. We de-boned them ourselves. We estimate 800lbs on the hoof. LOVE moose meat!

Holy <Trail Pros> That is awesome.

My family doesn't like wild game so even if I get something this fall I'll probably give it away. :(

So what does "moose" taste like? Similar to whitetail deerhttp://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/emoticon-misc-031.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons.php) or more like cow "beef"?http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons/emoticon-animal-007.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/emoticons.php) Gamey taste? Greasy? Inquiring minds want to know

I believe it's the closest thing to beef as you can get in wild game, not gamey like deer can be; and it's very lean as most wild game is. I had some maple breakfast sausages made recently and they are amazing. I might try to sneak some meat across the border for next Trikefest to BBQ up, shhhhhhhh ;) It would suck if it got confiscated:(

Awesome hunt! thanks for posting. I will be trying to put a cow elk in the freezer over the next couple weeks.
I used to go to Cold Lake with a former employer and train with the CAF pilots. Good times, we fished Primrose and Marie when we weren't working.

Good luck on the elk hunt cap! I was wondering if any US service members or contractors were on here that came up to use the bombing range. Unfortunately Primrose has been closed for 15 years to everyone except commercial fisheries and Natives. Sucks! Marie is good too; I have a campsite there.

Awesome coolpool! Nice Shootin' samjp22!!

A guy brought in a SxS today and I overheard him talking to my boss about his Alaska moose hunt, what an adventure that would be for us Midwesterners. Guy said he gave most of the meat to the guide, because it was costing him like 8 bucks a pound just to fly it home.

Moose jerky at Trikefest next year? :)

Right on guys! Heading to Athabasca for a week white tail hunting at the end of the month and then like last year I will try to get a moose here in B.C. In my area in B.C unless you get a draw you are only allowed to shoot a immature moose. 2 point or less. Sometimes it is very difficult making sure a immature bull isn't a 3x3. Anyways great job. You guys worked hard. Very impressive!

Good luck in Athabasca, while driving through Athabasca on our way home saw some monster deer in the fields!

Do you do any deer hunting or any other small game annually?

Cool Pool i noticed that you mentioned that you guys only got one? Does Alberta not have a bag limit on Moose? Here in the maritimes its a lottery for licenses, only 3500 or so are drwn for the 65,000+ apllicants, and we are only allowed 1 with that.

We used to deer hunt quite a bit. Sam started out on Ruffed grouse, then starting at 14 he shot three deer and two Moose. We really prefer the Moose meat.

It's a tough area where we go. There's limited roads and you need an Argo to get off road any distance. I think it's close to a 100% chance to be drawn up there. We had three tags for the three of us. For the record, Sam has managed to draw a Moose tag every year he applies; even for more popular areas. I don't question why, I just go along for the ride :-)
