Picked up this little guy today for free! It's missing the jug and piston and could use several other parts. I read a thread about buying yamaha motorcycle parts since they are cheaper, could anyone let me know what is a comparable model to this and if it is practical? Tag says it is a 1984. My 250 and 185 still need work but i couldn't pass this up!

A lot of people on here are running these kit and love them. I don't have one myself but will soon enough.

Thanks for the info. Any idea of what this bike would be worth in good running shape? That would be with this new top end and maybe a dg exhaust.

Looks like it has some great potential. Price was awesome too. I recall the front fender is one of the hard to find items.

Front fender is not too hard to find on a zinger. The Suzuki ALT 50 front fender is the hard one to find. If that thing was running, I would pay $300 for it

I took a closer look at it, and the oil line has been capped. The cable for the oil on the carburetor is also tied off. The guy I got it from had not touched it, and was looking to make it a project but never did. I'm guessing the person that did the damage tried to use mixed gas and the piston seized (not sure just guessing with the missing parts). Would it be a good idea to also replace the crank shaft? Does the PW50 have the same size cylinder as this because they are over half the price? I have found a 60cc top end on ebay just wondering if it would work.

a pw 50 is a 50cc, a 60 is a 60cc... so no not same. ive heard of people upgrading their PW50 with a tri zinger top end.

ive got a tri zinger frame out back. motor looks rough but i was gonna steal the front end and paint it red for an atc70

hey a pw50 top end will work on a tri zinger, mine has a standard bore pw50 top end on it right now and yes the big bore 60cc kit on ebay for a pw 50 will work too. the motor on both are basically the same design and the parts for a pw50 are way cheaper. hey if you do swap keep the tri zinger head on it cools better. people in europe swap the tri zinger head on the 50 mopeds by yamaha for better cooling.

Update: New cylinder and piston should be on the way. Decided to go with the qt50 big bore kit 60cc. Ill post once it is installed.
Next question I have is what are the common problems that are run into when it comes to the automatic oiler pump? Parts that fail?
Would I be better to keep it bypassed and run mixed fuel?
Also I don't think the previous owner had bypassed it correctly hence the missing top end.

I know most people don't trust the automatic oilier I would just run premixed to be safe.

A properly functioning oil injection system will reliably provide the proper amount of oil to the engine, and will be less of a hassle than mixing and separately storing 2 stroke fuel. That being said, many (especially those that already have another smoker to mix fuel for) still choose to delete it.

Got the rear end torn down. Used a 22mm nut, heated, wrenched, then bingo got the main nut out of the housing. Here are a few pics of the inside. Water definitely got in there at some point.

The gears seem to be ok but I am going to replace all of the bearings and seals. Allballs has a kit on Ebay that I think Ill snag it. One of the bearings on the short gear was completely shot.

Side note…has anyone used Softscrub on plastic? I was in Autozone tonight and started grabbing sandpaper. I asked the old fella working if he had done any plastic work. I explained that I wasn't needing an overhaul just a clean up. He said that he had good luck with Softscrub. I got home and pulled the bottle out and it worked well!!

A previous owner tried to sand it with a higher grit than they should have (seen in pic 1). The entire plastic has the light scratches on it and I did not make any! It seems to clean up nice and I think that Softscrub would make a nice clean up for the future. I plan on refinishing the plastics at a later time.

The frame and other pieces will be going to paint soon.

Yamaboss thank you but the front fender is in good shape.

That rear doesn't look too bad, gears look nice too. Go with the allballz, they are a good replacement.

What mix do you run?

I run 40:1 in everything I own. I put over 250 gallons thru my chainsaws every year had never had a problem with it. My alt 50 runs good on it too.

Been a while but finally getting back to working on it. I've hit a wall and have no idea how I didn't see it in the first place. The left end of the axle is stripped and someone had the bright idea to weld the tire hub to it. 225774

I had put all new seals and bearings in the rear end put it back together before I saw it. Does anyone have a good axle for sale? I've looked on ebay but they seem a little steep. Any help would be appreciated.

Getting it back together, Painted the frame, rebuilt rear end, reeds, painted forks, jug and piston. Tires are on their way. I went with the Kenda Scorpion for the front and Wanda V-tread for the rear (Link below. Thoughts??). Should look interesting. Now I just need to get the seat redone and paint the rims.

I was thinking about getting them for my zinger. You'll have to let me know how you like them. Only problem I can see is they might not slide as well as I'd like them too

Will do! I figured that they would be good to rip through the norm. I'll be at trikefest so ill put it through its paces and report.

They will be smaller than stock, both height and width. Not sure if that matters to you all, just a fact to consider.

Right I know they will be smaller than stock. I searched everywhere and could find 15" tires. It had Kendas on it before and they seemed to fit fine

Tires are in, Ill try to get them mounted up in a couple days

Got the tires mounted, what do you think? Yamaboss they have a pretty good edge but I don't think they will have any problem sliding. Showing a little more rim as expected.

Might experience some de-beading in a hard slide but other than that they are round and black!

Doesn't really matter what we think, what do you think?!

Good to see a long term project making progress. Good work.

Spent a frustrating night getting ready for trikefest. Finishing up the zinger and finally got to the point of starting it up and going through the break in. The darn thing fired right up and I was pumped. Then i started to hear a ticking in the top end. I switched it from start to run and the **** thing took off and nearly drug me across the garage! insight on this would help. I tried it again with the back raised and sure enough it was still ticking and louder than normal. After taking the head off and doing the process over again, I took the jug off too and found this. The is a scrape on the piston and it looks like the fire is getting past the rings in one spot. The is also wear on one of the holes in the jug.
232842
232843

Prior to all of this, I used a little oil to lube up the piston and worked the motor fairly well to get the oil all through out it. Main question is, do you thing the jug and piston are shot. If they are then I have learned my lesson with buy cheap and will invest in a wiseco. It's very frustrating when I've sunk a chunk of $ into this and have this happen especially after spending hours on the plastics and they turned out well. I cant seem to find the rubbing compound for the finish that I had read about in another thread.

Hopefully it'll make it down to trikefest next year
