Check. This. Out.

This thing is SWEET! I'd love to build something like this!

Ignore the fact he started it on ether and that it doesn't have pipes and that it started to lean out at the end,,, just think about bombing down the interstate on this thing. Or pulling into the local new harley infested meet. Maybe a Blessing of the Bikes,, shiiiieeeeeeetttt

An acquaintance of mine collects old Saabs. He took me for a ride in one of his 2-stroke Sonnets, it was awesome! They're not super fast (in a car anyway) but 800-ish cc's of 2 stroke smoke down the streets is way too much fun!

Motorcycle? Looks a rolling engine storage cart so far. SAAB, 2 stroke. Double the junk IMO. At least it has an antiquated, ill-handling front end and no rear suspension. Yes indeed, a great interstate cruiser it would be, if it ever cruises.

saabs put me thru school. Safest production car in the world at the time.
Love lots of the design, some not so much but most were state of the art
back 'then' (80's)
We figured not much to do with arctic circle weather and daylight so they
thought up some cool stuff. First turbo, wicked airplanes etc. etc
My fav part was they were built with teams on a flat floor and rolled thru the
factory so VERY easy to work on. 19 min to do a clutch, for instance.
Too bad gm ran them into the ground.
Not a real response to the orig post but nice to see saab stuff in general.

I just hope it doesn't turn into a SAAB story.

Imagine a lot of saabs had a 'freewheel' option.
The engine would float down to idle when you let off the gas no matter how fast you were going.
NO backpressure and very strange in the snow. Almost forgot about that.

As in it would? or would not? engine brake?

I'm a HUGE fan of the older 2-stroke SAAB's just because of their place in automotive history. I think this would make an EXCELLENT machine. But then again, I like to enjoy life ;-)

The reliability factor on these things is through the roof too!!! And when they are properly tuned they will start the first time every time.

Man,,,, the things I'd love to build!

I wonder if he ever got it finished?

yeah, no engine braking with the freewheel engaged but there is a lever to make it
'direct drive'.
Saab had a lot of great ideas, mostly from their airplane heritage.
One of my first was a 2 cyl 2 stroke with a pull start rope inside the cabin.
Had a friend who used to roll his all the time in a sand pit.
Pretty rounded to start with but never broke the windows rolling it over
and the doors always opened and closed.
Great crash stories in general btw.
60 mph, windshield wouldn't break and doors opened and closed. 99 model.
