Been out a half dozen times. And went out this A.M. in the middle of 2 rain fronts.
I did some grunt and doe bleats. Saw this guy off in the woods at about 100 yards.
Rattled some antlers together for about 20 seconds and he bee lined right to my blind.
He walked about 50 yards from my left and I drew on my bow. He got broadside at 33 yards...I grunted and he stopped and looked and I threw a arrow at him.
He ran about 125 yards and dropped. First of this year for me , and hopefully I can fill a doe tag too.

Nice buck Mosh!

I filled my doe tag with my 270 last wednesday morning. 60 yard shot through a small, last chance window. I knew I had a good shot on her and hit her good, but in a small way I got lucky. Right through the boiler room and didn't ruin a bit of front shoulder meat. :) Usually I find myself taking a quartering toward or away shot and I end up hitting at least 1 of the front shoulders...

Nice mature doe, got lots of good meat in the freezer now.

Still chasing Bambi's dad... ;)

How is your reloading doing??

Nice ones Mosh and Ride! Glad you both connected. An old neighbour wants a deer so I think I'll take my rifle for a walk on Nov 11th after Rememberance Day Ceremonies. Maybe I'll be able to add to this thread.

I'm trying to decide whether I should start hunting again or not. I have not hunted deer or anything since the 80s
when I got shot at and missed by about 2 ft out on public land. I can hunt at my brothers property without worry
but no one else in the house wants to eat it and I never did like gutting the beasts.

Good to see others having success.
Joe the reloading is generally a late winter thing for me so I wont be ramping that up till Feb more than likely unless I tag out early..haha..that would be awesome.

I just started bowhunting at the end of last season. At first it looked very hard to do and like a lot to learn. But to be honest I absolutey love archery. I bought a entry level bow to learn with and got so hooked I sold my TRX 250R and went on a full out archery/hunting preparation mission. Since then My wife got into it and I enjoy my hunting preps way more than any other hobby I ever had.
Bow hunting at least in my state yeilds almost 4 months of deer season vs 9 - 11 days of gun season.
The temps are nice early season and you can really play a controlling roll in your hunt during pre rut and rut phases. That was the most rewarding thing about yesterday's hunt for me, was kind of dictating that Buck to do what I wanted, with some strategies I have learned with extensive study in the past year..This weekend the Mrs..will be out hard over the next few days as well. Then we get our gun season a month from now we will hit. After that I will be in a tree stand with a bow again for late season. Last year we got 2 total with only having 1 week for gun. The freezer emptied right as this season ramped up. We would like to hit 3-4 this year. We eat all of the food... Tammy already let a doe go a few weeks back at 20 yards and that " deeritating" feeling is now making her regret that.

Cleaning them does suck...but that jerky is crack..I love bowhunting. It is just a whole different experience that kind of puts you in the driver seat somewhat. Tammy is actually a better bow shot than me. She has Robin hooded 2 arrows this year.

Oh and speaking of reloading I forgot to mention.... That doe was my first kill with my own "Barrett" brand ammo! Kind of a proud moment and very fulfilling. That case now resides on my keychain. ;)

Dirtweed: I don't think anyone likes gutting them... at least not unless they are a little touched in the head! LOL! I have always said that it's all fun till the bullet (or arrow) hits the hide. Then the work starts. Alot of my friends take their deer to processors, my dad has always done his own from field to freezer and that is how my brothers and I do it to this day.

But I'm still trying to work out the details of my invention: a bullet that when it hits the animal, it explodes and nice neatly sealed packages of meat (like you find in the store) rain down onto the forest floor. Then all you have to do is pick it all up and pack it out! LOL! :D

But in a little bit of a serious moment, the single most important and enjoyable thing about hunting for me is spending time with my Dad and my brothers. From 0-dark:30 coffee and breakfast, to second breakfast after morning watch, many memories are made.

Its literally been years since I have gone white tail hunting. I was going to go last season and this, but work keeps getting in the way.

Here's a hint for how long I have been away from this great sport.....I just got my Hoyt compound re-curve, re-strung last year ;)

I was out in Washington state and my sister showed me a of a big buck a lady friend of hers that shot through her screen door. She didn't want to open the door so she just cut the screen. Turns out to be a record buck for the state.

Then my sister and here hubby were out and they heard this really weird sound they had never heard before. The closer they got the closer it got until they seen it looking at them between two trees, it was a Lama! Freaked them out!!!!!!! lol. The pic isn't something you see everyday! My grand fathers farm is across the way about a mile a way and the people that bought it are breeding Lama's so it must have came from there.

Opening day here in NY, dad shot two button bucks and hit a doe but we lost that. I had a big mofo 3 point half rack (he would have been nice next year) walk in front of me about 40 yards out but I couldn't get a clear/clean shot so I let it pass. Someone else eventually dropped it though. Second picture is our friend, 9 pointer, still had velvet on them. Getting that one mounted.

Off to check a new 30 acre plot that has had no pressure for years. Really excited to spend gun week with my bow in this new place. It has been a wierd year for a lot of deer hunters from what I am hearing. Really lame rut activity, messed up weather patterns, and what appears to be a overall lower numbers year so far. .

Good job slash.

I've been avoiding this thread because I haven't had much time to hunt with work. Once and a while I'll get out a Saturday for a few hours. Once again I missed another fall turkey season. Pheasant and small game I've had a blast with my buddies.
December 1st is our opening rifle season for buck, then the following Saturday antlerless opens up. Hopefully I'll be posting on here with a nice big monster.

Work sucks.

But I must say those are some super nice deer slash, I wish I could get some like that. I'll be out on my bosses land opening day so hopefully it pays off. I'm a little hesitant to leave my usual spot where I got mine last year.

Mosh, you don't know how right you are about this year being a tough season!

Everyone I talk to online in other areas and in person locally is having a hard year,.... Lots of time in the woods without hardly seeing a tail! My family started the season here on the third saturday in October with 5 doe tags for our area! Only one has been filled, mine. And my brother shot a young 3 point buck opening day of black powder season the 2nd saturday in Oct... That is all we have taken so far.. and it's not from a lack of putting in the time in the woods either... Normally, between me and my family we have 3 or more deer in the freezer by this point in the season..easily. Now here we are with 3 weeks remaining and still so many tags to fill... Plus we all have buck tags to fill!!

Best of luck to the rest of you guys... it's been a strange and difficult deer season.... Seemingly all over

I'm taking my new rifle out this afternoon to see if I can put a dent in our tag situation....

It's weird seeing other peoples hunting limits, rules, etc.

Here you get 1 antlered deer tag and have to apply for one antlerless tag. If there are enough left and you wish to purchase another you can apply for one additional one.

Like I said, first week is buck only, then the following Saturday doe opens up.

That's for my area (4E), others are different for some stuff.

Missouri has a 4 point rule in the county I hunt . Has to have at least 4 points on one side . Both weekends , saw big body bucks that weren't legal . No does at all . Saw a big buck at 5 o'clock p.m. every day I hunted , 6 points on the right side , but the left side was missing , so I let him pass . Hope he makes it , and we meet next year . Gonna shine up the black powder ,,, check back in a month .

Pa only has a 3 point rule.
Opening day for me usually is I see a ton of doe then when doe opens up I see none.

But that's how it always goes right? You see a bunch of them when your not hunting them or they are out of season. Goes for all game.

NY you shoot whatever you want and just list how many it has per side on the tag. But doe permits are separate/extra.

Also too add to the last post. We hunted all weekend . Lots of snow, dented my sons truck on a stump, slid into a ditch and got stuck. Did lots of walking and fell down twice. Put a dent in the new Xbolt's stock when I fell on one of my walks. Can't wait to get out again. You never know when that big buck will show up! Our rules...

Archery season Sept thru January ..
Anterless muzzle loader 1 weekend in mid october..No bucks allowed with bow or muzzeloader that weekend...
Youth gun weekend NOV 23..archery allowed must wear orange though even if bow hunting.
Open rifle season coming up..Dec 1 thru 8th..
Then only archery after that til February. .

Bag limits..per hunter .

1 buck ONLY...anything under three inches considered anterless that you tag as a doe..
9 deer total in whole state. Each county has a bag limit..usually 3 deer per county.
Here you buy your tag first..no wait or applying is involved or limit.
Personally I think my states rules are a little overally complicated and even counterproductive to herd management..And our state public lands leave a lot to be desired ..But maybe my expectations or too high.

Wow Mosh, those are some complicated regs!

Here, your basic big game license gets you an buck tag and a bear tag. Then, you may pay $10 and apply for a Deer Management Permit (DMP) for 2 Wildlife Management Units (WMU). NY state is divided into 2 main hunting zones, Northern and Southern. Within those 2 zones there are dozens of individual WMU's. When you apply for your DMP you can pick 2 WMU you want a DMP in. You do this right as you buy your regular license. Then the computer will grant or deny your DMP applications based on predetermined parameters based on the DEC's deer management policy for those individual WMU's.

Then, you may purchase a muzzleloading privilege. This allows you to take a deer of either sex during the early northern zone muzzle loading season which is the week before regular rifle season starts. It also gives you 1 week after regular season ends in the southern zone.

Then there is archery. I am not as familiar with archery as I do not bow hunt... But I do know they start about 3 weeks before the early muzzle loading season starts in the northern zone and you get tags for that season as well....

I live in and hunt 6k right near the northern zone/southern zone border. I could literally just about throw a rock into southern from my driveway!

Once in a great while I hunt 6p. But haven't in years because the farms we used to hunt there are leasing most of their land out to hunting clubs. But its all good, my family and I have access to hunt about 200 acres of private property in 6k where we don't have to worry about other hunters. We usually do well and get 3 or 4 deer in the freezer...

had a good year at my hunting grounds in Southern IL. got a doe early in the archery season. got a 5 point opening day of shotgun. my buddy got a 7 point that was just a huge "cow", it had no neck, like a pit bull. neck was as wide as the cheek bones. both of us had a hard time lifting it onto the 4-wheeler rack. had to weigh 300 lb if not more. both bucks were missing points from fighting during rut.

tried the GOLF BALL trick to skin it for the first time this year. I would certainly suggest it to anyone who wants to try it and save some time. check out the you tube videos. it really worked great and only pulled off the skin, no meat came with it at all.

1. hang it by the neck. 2. cut off the hooves with a hack saw above the joint. 3. cut skin around the neck 4. continue the cut from gutting it up to your neck cut. 5. skin it like you normally would on the back of the neck until you have enough skin to get the golf ball underneath (fur side) and tie a rope around it on the meat side. 6. connect that rope to atv, truck or whatever and pull the skin right off.

side notes:
make sure what you hang it from is strong enough.
easier when deer still warm. the one we did about 6 hours after killing it was noticeably tougher
don't forget to remove the butt hole. not a big deal but easier to deal with when the skin is on.

I wish I could say I am happier about this harvest but some situations affected the spirit of this hunt. Chalk it up to a newish hunter in a stand 20 feet up making some mistakes. How much can a guy learn about hunting in 30 seconds? A ton if you ask me. I am thankful for this one but a shawdow looms over me for my mistakes..maybe at a later time I will elaborate. But this is another harves and more meat in the freezer.

@Mosh

I spine shot a doe a couple years ago. I felt like @#$% because I took a shot I should have never taken but I learned that patience isn`t just for my own success but also for the respect for humane harvesting of a living creature.

Not to say I`m implying you did something similar to my experience but generally all hunters make mistakes at some point....all that matters are your actions after the fact and wether or not you are humble enough to do something to prevent it from happening again.

I say this as I finish off a 2lb bag of venison jerky

Well, this weekend both of my brothers each filled their doe tags. One yesterday morning and one tonight in the last 15 minutes of the season. Up till yesterday we didn't have a kill on the ground since Oct 29th when I got mine. Wasn't looking good and it's been a tough year.

All in all, the Barrett clan put 4 in our freezers.. Not too shabby and about average for us.

So our season is all over here in the northern zone in NY. All that is left is the 1 week of late muzzle loader season in southern zone starting tomorrow. I may go down and hit a couple of pieces of county land and see if I can't fill my muzzle loading tag....

I still have both my tags , any deer and antler less . Rifle season in Missouri is over where I hunt . Muzzle load starts the 20th . Well now they call it " Alternative " You can use muzzle load / black powder . Center fire pistol .40 or bigger , .40 cal air rifle , and the spear thing ,,, cant spell it , ataladell ? Or you can sneak up on em and use the figure four leg lock and a choke hold .

^^^I LIKE the sound of your "alternative" season!!! ^^^

I have a S&W 460.... Might as well have a 45-70 rifle!! Would that be considered cheating and contrary to the spirit of the alternative season???

.40 cal air rifle??? I can honestly say I have never heard of such a thing... Care to elaborate??

And the atladell ( I don't know how to spell it either)..Kind of a spear/sling combination... I have seen them on TV..weird...

Got this big guy a couple weeks ago. He had been playing hide and seek for the past 2 years. This made the 5th time I saw him this year but I finally had a muzzleloader in my hands. Switzerland County Indiana.

Right on! Makes it even more exciting getting that buck after chasing him for a few years.

Congrats to all who connected! I'd be a little more disapponted in myself if we didn't have half a bull moose in the freezer. My neighbour wanted a deer and I passed on half a dozen does earlier in November. I had plans to go out on the last weekend but jammed out with the thermometer at almost -30. Pretty easy to talk yourself out of a hunt under those condition when you're just doing someone a favor.

We held our annual Cherry Grove Big Buck Night last weekend to raise funds for the local Cancer Victim support group know as Haying in the 30's. Over 400 people came through the door with 65 heads registered for scoring. After all our bills are paid we should be able to hand over a cheque for 5K! I was too busy being the MC to get any decent pics but here's some just the same. Details of our show can be found on www.cherrygrovebigbucknight.ca or find our group on FB at Cherry Grove Big Buck Night.

Very impressive animals and to be able to raise $5000 for a great cause is even better! The whitetails in northern Alberta always seem to get the big bases. Any from the Athabasca area there? If there is, it should have been my buck! ( ha ha)

A little late but the last day of rifle season here in pa (Saturday) I was out and happened to go for a walk with my dad at the right time. Someone shot down the other side of the mountain (private land) so we stood and waited incase something ran up and onto the public side and two happened to come up and two were dropped. My dad got one and we don't know who got the second. My last shot was where it died but his was also right before that. Oh well, I'm happy as long as I get to eat the meat.
My dads first deer in like 6 years.

Luckily someone on a utv stopped to help us drag them out, saved us hours. I drug the big doe up a mountain to the path, not fun.

WOW A mounted Bald Eagle........
I know eh! I took that photo with my US brethren in mind:beer. It's tough to get to keep them when found dead. The natives usually claim ownership for the feathers. Oh wait a minute, they claim ownership to everything:wondering

I got my first deer in a few years. I didn't even fire a shot and it conveniently came vacuum packed and ready for the freezer! I don't hunt but I do enjoy the meat, thankfully I have a friend with more tags than room in his freezer.
