I picked up a parts bike in early 2013 about 6 months afterpurchasing my first Z. After I got it home and stripped it down I realized the frame was in pretty good shape, but it had been sitting behind a shed with the top end missing off the motor for some time. After seeing Raffa's Z490 the wheels began to turn and I started search eBay for a powerplant. Once I located an engine and took care of mounting in the frame it just kind of sat for a while because I seem to be hung up on wanting an in frame pipe. In the meantime I began finish a top mount tank that I purchased. That's pretty much where I'm at up to this point, hopefully I'm about to ship the frame and motor out to have the pipe and motor work done.

Upload to either photobucket or other image hosting site or follow the below step by step process below to have 3wheelerworld host them.

http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/169373-How-to-link-photos-from-EBAY-or-Craigslist

If you use photobucket you take a link from that site that looks like this

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk179/miked1957_photo/DSC_6936.jpg

When you copy from the hosting site it will have before and after the http link. If you "reply with quote" my message for the pic below you will see what I mean.

No problem, I was wondering that myself

Right after I got it tore down. The weak factory foot peg mounts were stripped out on one side and the peg had been welded on. I cut all that off and replaced it with the 3/8" plate from Raffa.

Motor and tank fitment. I made the mistake of selling this tank when it was completed to get the wife off my case after I bought the 86 Tri-Z. It was damaged in shipping and returned to me to be repaired. While trying to repair it it began cracking at the welds in a few spots and I just returned the buyers money. Hopefully I can get it straightened back out to use for this build.

What transmission are you using and what are you gonna use it for? Sounds like that would be tricky to stay on.

It is an xl500 and the trike is not a 200x. It is a custom built chassis from the 80's by a famous builder.

This is the tank after it was completed and before it got damaged. I've got a stock 1990 YZ 490 dirt bike and its definitely a handful. This one will be far from stock.

Stock YZ transmission. Extended swingarm should aid with staying on. It will be a drag bike/duner.

In just rebuilt an IT490 engine for a friend, and had some YZ parts to pick thru. I thought it was neat that the YZ 4-speed has a first gear that's the same ratio as 2nd in the 5 speed IT trans. Some beefy gears too!

My '88 and '90 YZ490s are both 5 speeds

Hello Lee I was trying to buy that on eBay from you but I didn't win it. But you said you was going to make more tanks are still going to make more tanks?

It wound up being a hell of a lot more trouble than its worth.

I've got some nice '85 forks and triples to replace the dirt bike front end, but I'm still trying to make up my mind on the rear. I've got 2 spare '85 swingarms and 1 '86. I've also got an '01 raptor shock and a warrior link, but I think stock length will be a little too wild. So I'm on the lookout for a nice extended swingarm. I have lots of Z parts to trade if anyone has one not being used. I may have an arched tubular one built...

Lee I can't help but notice the transformation of the gas cap area,,, how did the tank go from a nice black plastic cap to what appears to be a flange bolts gas cap area ??? What kind of cap or plug is used in the flange looking set up ??? Sorry for all the questions, just very curious about that.
I am half tempted to offer you a heck of a lot of money just to borrow that tank so I can make a mold of it for future use.
Nice build you got going on for sure !
