I recently picked up an '84 200x. One of the major draws to it was it looked like it hadn't been messed with...at all. Original (weathercracked) tires, plastic in fantastic shape with no cracks, toolbox intact with all the tools, etc. One problem I'm having though is that the clutch engagement is incredibly short - very smooth as well...too smooth....feels like it's slipping. It's still rideable - feels like the early stages of clutch failure. It's my first trike with a manual clutch, although I've had dirt bikes before.

So I ordered a new barnett dirt digger clutch, but when I removed the old clutch, the discs look just fine with plenty of friction material remaining - is it possible that the springs are just weak causing it to slip?

Since it didn't appear to be messed with, I also expected the oil rotor to be full of gunk when I opened up...however, there was actually very little crud in it when I opened it up, which I interpret as very little wear from the clutch. The oil rotor screws looked like they'd never been touched either...I can only surmise that this trike has been ridden VERY little.

Yes, the springs might be worn, but if its not slipping i would ride it.
Try climbing a steep hill and see if the clutch slips. If it's pulling up the hill you are probably ok.

Well, since I had the new clutch to put in anyway and it was already torn apart, I went ahead and installed it. The new clutch discs were about 3.0mm thick, the old ones were about 2.9mm, and service limit according to the manual was 2.6mm, so the old one was fine. The old springs measured out fine, although the new ones were slightly more stiff. Put everything back together, lubed and adjusted the cable, and it's working fine. Still a very short clutch engagement, but I guess that's normal - gotta admit, this 200x doesn't have the seat-of-the-pants acceleration my 200s has (To be fair, I rebuilt the motor on the 200s...so it's bored up a size too). But it is definitely nicer over the bumps :). I suppose it's a heavier trike due to the added suspension. Guess I better keep my eyes peeled for a 350x next lol.
