My cousin just rebuilt his 250R and decided to "Break-In" the motor the way a friend of his recommended. So, instead of running the first tank at about 1/2-3/4 throttle, he guns it wide open in Neutral for a few minutes, then takes off Balls to the Wall down the road. About 45 min later my cell rings and it's him. So I picked him and the trike up and sure enough, the motor has become rock solid (and had a red glow-I'm thinking he was running kinda lean too). So long story short, we're gonna crack it open and see how bad the damage is.
So anyway, what is the proper way to break in a motor? I always thought 1st Tank 1/2-3/4 Throttle, and change the Oil after. Then slowly work it up to full throttle after about 10-15 hours. What do you all think?

There are many schools of thought on this very subject. My method is to do an initial engine start and let it sit and idle for several minutes. No playing with the throttle. Let it cool completely down. Second engine run is much the same as the first. The third engine run is running it around the neighborhood at low RPMs, no gunning it. Let it cool completely down. Fourth engine run is a little faster, let it cool completely down. These are called heat cycles. It gives the motor a chance to seat the rings in. Running it WFO right off the gun is motor suicide. By the 5th or 6th heat cycle its ready to go. I have used this method since I was a teen and for me it has always worked. The motor I just pulled from Whiskey Bent is pristine. It looks like there is only a few hours on it. The top of the piston has a little carbon on it but the piston skirt and cylinder look beautiful. I built this motor in 09 and I have beat the hell out of it. Pick an oil and stick to one brand. Flip flopping oils is bad. 32:1 Castrol 927 with 100% 92 octane pump gas.

don't forget to recheck the head and base bolts after a couple heat cycles to make sure they are still tight.

I am sorry to hear the bad news.

Life keeps teaching us lessons until we learn them.

.

if you think it was lean then i would also jet it up a little and don't run a hotter plug than the mfg suggests.

i use a very lite coating of oil . . too much oil can prevent the rings from sealing properly . . some people use just wd40

i let them idle for around 10 minutes with a high idle and fan blowing on them.

let it cool then ride it on flat ground up to 1/3rd throttle without lugging it for maybe 10 minutes while accelerating and decellerating periodically . . let it cool then ride it easy after that for half a tank.
