Their is several chain brands that sell sets. Comes with chain and front and rear sprockets. Is their a difference between 85 and 86. Lot of places on eBay say 1985 250r and have a different listing for 1986. But some say both years. So is their a difference? Any help would be great

Both are the same

Rear sprockets are NOT the same!

One rides on the inside of the sprocket hub and the other rides on the outside. You have to run whichever sprocket matches to your axle.

Okay I was thinking their may be a difference. My r is an 85 but I know people like to change stuff over time. Does the 85 sprockets run on the inside or outside. I want to make sure before I order 85 and mine has been changed to run 86 sprockets.

'85 runs on the outside, '86-on runs on the inside.

FYI: you can swap an '86-on axle into your '85 rear end. All you have to do is run the '86-on rear sprocket. If your sprocket alignment on your machine is good, you know you are running the correct rear sprocket.

Front sprockets are the same.

An 86 sprocket can be used on an 85. My 85 had an 86 sprocket on it when I first got it. You just have to make sure you use bolts with a tapered head on them so they will fit into the tapered holes on the sprocket

Hold on a sec.... Which side of the sprocket hub do you mount it too??? I'm thinking with the '85 spec axle, you would have to run it on the outside still due to clearance issues between the sprocket and carrier? And if that's the case, is sprocket alignment on??

Well what you have is the 86 rear sprocket setup.

With the 86 sprocket on the 85 hub the sprocket was still mounted on the outside and the alignment of the chain was still fine. Now I've got an 86hub and sprocket on there but yes the 86 sprocket is on the inside of the 86hub

When I order my sprocket set and chain I'll get the 1986 then.

You'll need different bolts as well also good to put lock nuts on the back side of the bolts just for some extra insurance

Thanks Samjp22. Funny, I would think that alignment would be off a bit... But anyhow.. :beer

By the looks of his photos, he does have the correct bolts already in the rear sprocket. X2 on new locknuts.

I would say the previous owner must have switched it over to a 86 setup. I'll get a 86 chain and sprocket set ordered. And get some lock nuts. Might just use some none permanent locktight and try that first

Trikeguy from the looks of your pictures it already has the correct Honda lug nuts on there and yeah po switched over to an 86 set up.

With the 85 sprocket hub the bolts thread into the hub and on the 86 hub the bolts just go through the hub then are held on with a nut

I appreciate all the help guys... I would have ordered 85 setup if I wouldn't have asked. You never know what PO has did in its 30 year life

So, being that his sprocket mount holes in the hub are not threaded, that would mean it has the '86 axle...Sorry if I am repeating what you said Samjp22 if thats what you meant....

And you are right, the 85 sprocket hub mount holes are threaded. Been awhile since I got rid of my '85 axle. Thought that was the case but was not sure enough to say so.

Yeah must be an 86 axle unless the PO went through the hassle of swapping sprocket hubs which I highly doubt

Been a little while but just got my chain and sprockets put on. I ordered the Primary Drive X ring chain and sprocket set for a 1986 250r on ebay. was $85 shipped. I have to say i am more pleased with the quality of the product feels great, but i guess time will be the true test. Just wanted to follow up and thanks for all of the help about the difference between the 85 and 86 setups. My 85 must have been switched over one point in its life because the 86 stuff i ordered fit flawlessly and matched my previous setup.
