Hi everyone. Im new to this site, but not to the water-pumper 250R's. I owned a few back in 87 and early 90's. Now that I am older and wiser (up for discussion) I decided to buy another 86 and do a full OEM restoration. I found alot of information on this site and I wanted to share my progress with you guys. I have seen some museum quality resto's on here and I dont know if mine would go in a museum, but it will be nice.

My canvas is a nice 86 with original engine, seat, and a few other important parts. It has the Maier lo-profile fenders on it, so I am prepared to spend some coin on OEM fenders. It came with the gold wheels & Ohtsu tires and an extra set of gold rear wheels, stock exhaust and carb (has an ESR on it), extra swingarm and shock and a few other goodies. I brought it home and washed it up and next month I will start the stripping process and bring it tot he frame and start the paint/powder process and the transformation back to stock.

Here is what it is now. The DG Pipe, wheels tires, handlebars, fenders will be available for sale as soon as I strip it.

Well some progress is being made. I have the R stripped down and the frame is off to the powder coater. The engine has been completely disassembled, beed blasted and painted, new bearings, seals and it will be going together as soon as the new gaskets come in. I wanted to strip the engine so I had the nice clean green gasket lines (weird, I know). The exhaust has been beed blasted and painted as well. While the frame is off to the powder coater, I rebuilt the front forks with new OEM seals and boots and I alse rebuilt the rear shock. I rebuild snowmobile shocks on the side and figured that the R cant be anymore difficult (it was actually easier). So now the shock has new seals, bumper, oil and a fresh N2 charge. Now for the pain-staking task of cleaning all the other parts and wheels.....stay tuned for more later

So after three mixes of paint I finally got it! My paint center didnt have the "glamis Gold", so we had to take their equivilant, flatten it and here it is. Very happy with the result. The pics are before sand blasting, sandblasted and after the new paint.

I should mention that the front hub in the pic is original paint. The angle of the pics makes the swing arm look glossy, but it isnt.

Well. Today I finally got all the gaskets that I needed so I put the engine together. I just need some new hose clamps and it will be ready for the frame when I get it next week.

I had a busy schedule with work and I havent had time to work on the R that often. Here is where Im at at the moment. I had a budget for this thing when I started and my wife told me that I would go over. How well she knows me! Just when I thought I was done with parts and reproducing, I decided I needed a few other "new" parts. Almost all of the bolts on it have been replaced with new. THat small change added so much to the visual appearance! Check out the close up pics of the engine installed in the frame to see what I mean (or maybe its just me..) So another $600 later I have them (for the parts, not the bolts). Now I found a place that can rezinc the rear axle for a fair price so I might have that redone as well. I was originally going to sell this when I was done, but I am starting to change my mind about that. Everyone that comes in shop wants it and tells me stories of when they had one. I have a few other Generation 3 R's too. The 85 that you see in the background will most likely be the next project. I have to finish a couple Harley custom V-Rods first though. Stay tuned for more pics of the R. My schedule will start to free up again next month and allow me some time to work on it.

The chaos I am having doing a simple spruce up on a 110, I just can't imagine the trouble lurking on this. But very nice.

Slow but steady... Here are a couple pics of recent progress

Progress has slowed a bit again due to various things. I didnt like the gold cad zinc paint from Eastwood on the axle, so It has been removed and sent to OH for re-plating of the gold zinc. The gas tank has been shipped to AZ for a professional polishing job. Once those two pieces are back, I should be able to finish it up in a day or two. Then......onto the next project.....the 85 250R

How much was the charge to re-zinc the axle?

I have a whole bucket of bolts and an axle i would like to re-zinc.

Thank you.

Very pretty bike by the way.

Sorry I havent posted for a while. I see I missed a few questions too. Sorry. For your zinc needs, talk to Bruce at Beringer Plating in Akron Ohio. He is a class act. He stands behind his work at a reasonable price.

The 86 is coming along. I have the rear axle installed complete with wheels and tires. I am sooooooo happy that I had the axle zinced instead of painted. It is 100000 times nicer (and original too). I also did the brake hub, sprocket hub and wheel hubs. From what I could tell by original honda brochure, there were all originally plated. Once it is together, I will post all the pics. It has been a great time building this and cant wait to start the restoration of the 85R. I also picked up the 86 200x in the pics. It is all original...even has the original Certificate of Origin! One owner machine. It will get a restoration along side of the 85R as soon as the 8R is done (hopefully in a week or two). Once the 86R is done, it will go on the rack in the shop.....along with the 85R and 86X. I love doing these things and had a great time doing the 86 and met alot of great 3 wheeler fans too!

Dude this is such an inspiration! Did you have any background knowledge with that 200 before you started? I've never been on my 86 350x, fiancées father just gave it to me but told me it needs some carburetor work. I wanna do a full restoration like yours, but I definitely need to do some research. Where are your sourcing all these new bolts and parts from?

Well, the time has finally come to introduce to the world (at least 3 wheeler world) to my "brand new" 1986 ATC 250r. First off....thanks to everyone that answered my questions and phone calls. I wanted to make this thing like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. It is close, but not perfect. There are a few minor parts that I am still sourcing, but for all intents and purposes, she is done! I went so far as to put in a new transmission, clutch plates and water pump too. Every bearing, nut and bolt have been either replaced with new or re-zinced. The tool box is complete with all the tools and the owners manual too. I even have a sales brochure for it. Anyways, thanks again to all. I hope that you enjoy. Now to move on to the 85 R and 86 200x.

I have an extensive background in Honda as my extended family has owned a dealership for 37years. Its not hard though. Get yourself a shop manual and find a good website that has the parts diagrams. Parts can be found at Honda or Ebay or the members of this forum. Just ask! Thats where I found my NOS headlight garnish. The 350X is a great machine. Good luck!

Awesome build.

You`ve definitely inspired me to get started on my 86 R this week. I definitely prefer a replated axle, hubs, and associated hardware. Looks fantastic!
