I need something that will plow snow and haul firewood, I was thinkin about getting a sears garden tractor
but also found a few old compact tractors on CL. one is a 75 john deere with a 10 HP motor the other is a 1965 IH Cub Cadet another 10 HP motor. They want 500 for the old compact tractors and for the sears garden tractors I see them for around 300 used.

What would you recommend as I never used one of these machines before, thanks

The older Cub 100 is a good one I have a 1964 that I am restoring. I have also have many Deere and you can't beat them at all. Plus it is easier
to find attachments for the Deere and Narrow frame cubs than the Sears. Some of the really old Sears are good solid tractors, but anything newer
than the 70s are not as solidly build as the Cub or Deere.

I recommend you look for a 1970s John Deere 110/112 (Kohler Engine) or a 1980s 200 series John Deere tractor (212, 214 or 216). Plentiful attachments, easy to work on and parts are available.

I like old ones, you can powercoat them up pretty cool and they look boss. I am soon looking for something old 60-80's in the next few months. I seen a nice lifted one on 31's forsale local but it was too much!

I prefer allis/simplicity for small machine

easy to work on, tough little buggers and heck who doesn't like a garden tractor with 3 ptos that can do things like run a buzz saw, run a sickle bar, or my favorite the weed cutter...very cool attachment pre osha, loaders, mowers, blowers, grader, earthcavator etc

my allis, b12 upgraded with a 16hp briggs

Dirtweed , I love your John Deere Mowers , great job on your restorations . I have a late 1980's John Deere RX73 mower ,still running strong.

A guy around here has a 74 john deere with a 10HP kohler motor. he is asking 500 and needs a front tire.
Another one up for sale is a Yard Machine Garden Tractor 2003 with a 17 HP 2cyl briggs, hydro transmision, 46inch deck, new battery and tires rebuilt carb asking 550...... what do you think of the hydro trannys and what machine would you choose ?
BTW some of the tractors posted above are super nice runners and restores

Stick to an older tractor like a JD or cadet for the ease of finding spare parts and attachments

Stay away from the Yard Machines and any MTD produced tin machines. Hard to tell what the Deere is worth without pictures
and more details. For $500 though it better be in darned fine shape. Parts will be easy to find for it though. Where in NY are you?
Might know some guys that have tractors to part with.

Also thanks unfortunately I only have the Yellow 316 at this point the others have gone on to new owners as I lost interest in them or
ran out of space in the garage.

Get the deere or cub cadet. Older ones even if it has a hydro are mostly bullet proof unless you run ethanol gas through the engine. Carbs hate ethanol. Especially really old carbs.

Hydrostatic transmissions rarely get serviced in my experience. Easy enough to do on most machines.
The arena drag at my grandparent's farm was an old Ford LGT120 with a Kohler K341 swapped in, and that thing wouldn't quit. The 341 had been sitting on the rack in the open machine shed for years with oil in it and rags shoved in the intake and exhaust, and after some electrical updates, started right up. A good, solid tractor all around, which is more than I can say for the replacement it outlived. Even makes a good rough mower, if you're a bit behind on your yard work.

Dirtweed, you're 100% correct on the MTD tin rigs. I raced an old 8hp chassis a few years back with a nasty 8hp Briggs, and it took a lot of "legal" bracing to get that to not twist on dirt. I don't think their true garden tractors would have been much stiffer.

So if you think MTD is junk what do ya think about AYP like sears craftsman ? I hear the new ones are made by 8 year old Chinese slave girls.

Old Cub Cadet or an old John Deere.

These days they put Briggs and Stratton motors in them sold as JOHN DEERES!!

Kinda partial to the Case 446 and 448. bullet-proof hydraulic drive and lots of accessories out there for them.

I have a 1966 sears suburban with the 10hp tecumseh. It has a 3 pt. hitch on it and the mule drive. Mine is both burning some oil and spitting oil out of the motor, I figure around the crank seal...it probably sat up a long time and the seal dried out. At least the frame won't rust :P Still, those things are tanks. The frame and transmission are built like a tractor. It will haul or pull whatever you want in low range I gurantee you it would outpull my big red 5 to 1. Not only is it geared to crawl it is 600 something pounds? I don't think you could kill the transmission on one people use them in puller tractors. I will probably add some lucas oil treatment to mine to try to slow the oil consumption down and run the snot out of it.
