Im new to the three wheeler world I bought a big red and whe she is cold it can be aggervating I read that you can take a #66 micro bit an drill the starter jet to make crank better in cold weather is this true and does it work

So youre saying you want to drill your pilot jet to have a richer idle? Have you used the choke? And most machines don't like starting in the cold too much

Using the choke dosent help very much at all ive read that the pilot jet was to small they sold carb kits that had the bigger piliot jet in it but that kit is no longer available when I get it to crank and it warms up it starts up perfect

When my 200s didn't want to start in winter I would get a straw put in the gas tank hold the top of the straw and put the straw down the intake and let go so the gas would go in same as using starting fluid but it doesn't hurt the bike. Why I did this, farmer ones told me never to use starting fluid because then the tractors will not start unless you use starting fluid. Don't know if true but I don't use it.

I bet your pilot jet is plugged. You could pull the carb off and clean all the jets and or buy the carb rebuild kit for about $20 online and replace all of the jets. I just did this to a big red that had been sitting for years and it will start with one or 2 kicks and idle for as long as there is fuel.

The drill you need is a 0.80mm micro-drill. Here is my carb rebuild thread for the ES/SX carbs. http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/161746-ES-SX-350X-Carb-rebuild-Tutoral?p=1257154#post1257154

Jim to the rescue. I looked for that link for him last night. Couldn't find it. I feel that really needs to be put in world class help or someplace similar. Great job again Jim.

Running the checklist, is the choke in place? Fresh gas? Spark plug condition? Will it start with starting fluid?

Choke is in place fresh gas new plug havent tried starting fluid if they jet was drilled to big wat could i expect the bike want even
Try to crank where before when trying to cold start it I would feather throttle to get it to hit

Drilled too big would cause it to gas foul the plug. Is the plug soaked?

Everything is in place and fresh gas new plug havent tried starting fluid

If your motor fires on starting fluid then that's telling me the startup circuit in the carb is not working. Also, did you drill the jet?

That sounds like a clogged pilot jet.

I read this thread and I remember doing the same thing to a 1990 Suzuki DR350 motorcycle. The TSB from Suzuki required a kit that Suzuki sold with a pen vise and the small drill bit. I assume the 0.8mm micro bit you mentioned would need to be used in the pen vise not and actual drill?

Jerry, the only thing I can offer at this point is for you to send me your carb and let me work my magic on it. I can test it on my mockup.
