I just got a 86' 250SX. Seems to be in really good shape for the most part. The cam chain has some rattle to it though. At what point should this be replaced? It is a little noisy compared to my 87' 250es but not near as noisy as a 85' 250es I used to have. Also, I noticed that you can get "new" cam chains still but I haven't saw any "new" cam chain guides for sale anywhere? Are "used" ones Ok to use or are they not much of a wear item? Thanks for your time!

If the coatings on the guides are ok, reuse them. I have only seen a couple of guides that needed replacement.

Usually all you need is the chain

Ok Sounds good. If I understand correctly, the tensioner is an auto tensioner right? Do these need to be replaced also? Thanks.

Nope, just rewind it after the new chain is installed. You do have to remove it to replace the chain so a fresh gasket will be needed.

I wish there was a measurement for the tensioner, service limit type specs.
I guess oil staining will tell how far out it is.

Good points! I have studied my shop manual for any info but it's not real detailed, IMO. Thanks
