So my buddy dumped this black Yamaha 3-wheeler on me last fall after finding out that I had done a top-end rebuild on my Honda.

He said it was smoking and he wanted me to rebuild the top-end on it. I looked at the VIN, and it appears to be an 85.

Ive already came up with a price for a piston, boring the cylinder, and gaskets. I got to thinking about the timing chain, and figured it should be replaced. I dont see any kits when I search, but chains are cheap and plentiful.

My question is, should I go ahead and replace the gears and guides too? I mean, if they fail, it would be just as catastrophic as the chain letting go. Anything else I should also replace?

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity and slightly off topic and in no way helpful at all, how much did you figure it was going to cost you? I got two I need to freshen up and a ballpark idea couldn't hurt.

Did mine for $240. Including valve grind and .50mm bore.

Found a .030 over piston kit on Ebay for like $50
Gaskets are like $30 on Ebay
I can get the machine work done for $50
Timing chain itself is like $20 on Ebay

Cam gear and both guides comes to about $90 new on Cheapcycleparts.com

Apparently you can't replace the crankshaft gear?
