Yamaha Starter Help

Could someone tell me how to jump the starter on my 85 200e shaft??
I have recently purchased and tried everything but can't get it running, I heard of this method before but am unsure

Take a jumper cable and clamp the positive post on your battery (make sure it is charged) take the other end of that wire and attached it to where the wire connects to the starter. Or you can just touch the 2 prongs on the solenoid using a wire or screwdriver.
