I am working on an 83 Yamaha 225DX that will not start with the electric starter. It turns over fast but will not start. Strange thing is it will pull start with one or two pulls of the recoil and runs flawlessly. I checked compression (160psi) and spark running the electric starter and both are good. Voltage at the battery is 12.5 off, 12.54 at idle and 13.5 reved up. Checked stator white/red to white/green and got 204 ohms. I've run out of ideas. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Join the club! Seems to be a common problem. You could check the valves. Let me know if you find anything that works for you. Good luck!

lol. That's reassuring. I'll check the valves and timing. .004" intake and .008" exhaust sound about right?

That sounds good, they should be .002" -.004" intake and .005"-.009" exhaust.

OK. Timing and valves are both good.

So to eliminate any electronic anomalies like bad connections, cdi box acting strangely, etc. I grounded a car battery to the engine then connected the positive directly to the starter. With the key on and kill switch on run the engine cranked but still no fire. Disconnected the battery and pulled the starter cord and it fired right up. At this point the only difference between these two starting methods is man power vs electric. All switches were in the same position and no buttons were pushed. I'm wondering if it's an RPM problem. I connected a tachometer to the spark plug wire and cranked the engine with the starter. 470 RPM. I then pulled the rope and got between 700 and 900 RPM. Does anyone know the rpm spec?

I believe the problem is weak spark from the electric start. I think my next step is testing the coils and stator.

I have a theory I am working on , but am waiting on some things to come in the mail. I hope that it will prove true and fix all of our electric starts, as I have been fighting with mine for 4 years now. If it works I will make a new thread for everyone to read.

Just tested what I assume is the pickup coil. Two wires separate from the stator connector white and yellow/red. Tested .2 ohms. I think it's supposed to be 195 ohms. I'll order a new one tomorrow and hopefully we will be back in business.

I have a 1985 suzuki lt250ef that does that, still haven't figured it out!

How do you start a new thread?

so when I replaced my voltage regulator with a 4 pin chinese one , "note had to cut wiring to do the swap out" I got weak spark back, however, my ignition source coil is also damaged so that will need to be replaced as well, and I am thinking about replacing the pickup coil too. But by replacing the voltage regulator I went from no spark to weak spark, and after cleaning my source coil I have hit or miss on the electric start now.

It's a weak stator. I've replaced more than a few on the older Suzuki Quadrunners that had the same issue.

So I recommend replacing the ignition source coil on your stator, that's what fixed mine. It starts right up now. There is a guy on eBay that sells them for 29$ his name is mrelectricalinc I will post a link to it in a bit for you guys.
