I was given the opportunity to ride Dean's Banshee this weekend out at Superstition. Man what a ride. Never really ridden a quad before...

it felt like a trophy truck with handlebars. The ride was insanely plush with an unreal amount of wheel travel. I rode it like a trike through the whoops with all my weight back, but Dean says he rides like he's trying to hold the front end down. i understand why... watch those tires disappear when the throttle is stabbed

The Banshee is my all time favorite ATV, yes, even more than my 250r. Have you returned the jack hammer you had to rent to remove the smile from your face the whole time you were riding it?

My first time seeing Dean on his Banshee with desert lights was at Glamis Comp Hill, all of us as spectators sitting at the bottom watching the hill racing witnessed for the first time someone coming down the hill just as fast as he went up, that told us we needed better suspension....what a rush!

looks like he likes the J -arm frame design. I have never seen arms that go all the way back to the main frame. I am looking at a banshee for my next quad, stockish however.

I too have always admired the Banshee, though never enough to own one, until now. I told myself if i owned a Banshee, it would be a bone stock '87, but after seeing the candidates 28 years later, i dont think ill locate one for a reasonable price in a condition that is acceptable to me. I remember watching a Banshee promo video when i was a little kid. It documented the Banshee's first run at the Baja 1000. Wonder where that video is now...

I cant get the sound of that motor out of my head. This motor with the Toomey pipes makes a very unique sound. Its identifiable from a mile away. Dean happened to be in Ocotillo Wells when Dad got a call from him. He made the 40 minute ride over from Ocotillo Wells to Superstition straight through the desert. We could hear him coming.

Riding my R through the same whoops right after the shee was my jackhammer BKM haha

Love that story HairyJR. He's a mad man haha Dad tells a story about a time when they were riding together through a whoops section going full bore when one of the spindles on Dean's bike broke. Dad was sure it was game over for Dean...but he RODE IT OUT. Didnt even come off the bike. Kept it on all 4 (or 3 at that point). Just wild.

Everything on the bike was fabricated by Dean, including the frame, tank, A Arms, swingarm, steering components, and airbox

Told ya before, I'll say it again. You're a privileged man!! Have you ever heard a shee with a 2 in 1 pipe? One of my favorite sounds on earth. I'm not gonna get emotional enough to say I love them more than others... But Deans?? Yeah,, That would be a candidate for sure! So funny this happened. I decided last week one of the things I'm gonna build sooner than later is a Banshee with a 2 in 1. THE absolute most CRITICAL thing on any multi cylinder machine is syncing the carbs. Perfect balance from idle to wot. 999 out of 1000 Banshees out there are sluggish, each cylinder battling with the other begging for the carbs to be synched! I am going to try a 2 in 1 intake and exhaust. A top tuner told me back in the day, one or the other. Not both. Gotta see for myself :) Thank you again for sharing Paul.

Here in PA banshees rule the coal pile hills which is the only reason I want one. I need a title however but I am looking at decently well kept up machine around $2500 give or take. I love the front end. Have wanted once since seeing one new in 1995...so now 20 years later its time to just do this thing.

Paul you get to do some cool stuff. I agree that the best sounding 2 stroke is a well tuned Banshee with Toomey t5 or t6 pipes. A lot of the guys that drag race where I do with their Banshees have the Toomey pipes. The 2 into one pipe sounds sweet to. Iv heard zmpolaristechs Tri-shee and she sounds sweet.

My first one was a twice ridden purple and yellow '95 that I bought in '98. The owner bought it for himself as a college graduation present, rode it twice, then went back to school and needed more books. They are awesome machines, it's just too bad they are made by Yamaha.

You're a lucky man! Would love to have a chance to ride a piece of history like that. It's hard to tell from the pics but does it have a no link swingarm?

The frame is heavily modded. I wonder just by looking at the pics if they set the engine back about 1 inch to lighten the front end. That was the one thing that made a shee the ultimate climber was the heavy front end, but a horrible MXer was engine placement. They spun too much and did not steer real great with MX with that engine placed so far forward.

2 into 1..Yes Thee craziest sounding pipe on any ATV ever........one or the other..The myth you run the 2-1 carb with the pipe is false.....
And yes...for you ATC007...Sorry for crappy quality...but the sound is there...

Didn't play Mosh. Thanx for trying. Up here in the hills. The echo of one Banshee with a 2 into 1 sounds like a whole pack of pissed off F1 cars.

Frame is full custom from tip to tail built by Dean. See that little sticker on the frame above the front shock in the 2nd picture? thats a CA "special construction" or custom frame tag assigned to non manufactured frames. I have tags like that on the Nicholsons and Dickson 90/110 frames

never heard the 2 into 1 exhaust, but have seen some pictures. pretty fancy! i like it! and agreed... it does sound like an F1 car haha! wow!

If you get tge chance to ask him, I would like to know if they moved the engine back. I would guess it made a world of difference and by your description of it was skying the front end that makes sense.

Conversely, amongst the shee population the 2-1 pipe is hated. They really slow the banshee down, but allow stump pulling low end torque which suits thick trail riding and hillclimbing rather well.
I am a hardcore advocate of the 2-1 pipe and the only dual pipes that give a shee great all around power , IMO, without sacrificing low end, is the with the exception of the Motofast 2-1...... the DMC 916s..... Which is what we run now, although we keep 2 sets of Motofast 2-1s hanging around. You cant pry em from me dead....
