Hello, I'm a new 3 wheeler owner from NC. I'm a long time banshee guy and never really had any intention of buying a 3 wheeler even though I think they are super neat. However, yesterday I was driving down the road and an ATC caught my eye at a thrift shop. I stopped to look at it and had/still have my concerns about buying it. It's missing the rear plastic, seat, CDI, coil , headlight and kill switch box. The owner did not know much about it but I pulled the cord and the motor turned over. The oil dipstick showed oil in the bottom end, so I offered him $50 and put it in my truck. Before I left the owner gave me a CDI and a coil but thinks they came off a larger ATC. Can anyone confirm if that is true based on these pics?

That CDI is off of a bigger atc/atv for sure. The coil is most likely from an older 110. Parts are really easy to find for these. It seems like everyone tears them down instead of trying to fix them. $50 is good price no matter what you do with it

So I should not try to use the coil either?

The CDI looks like it is from a 250ES big red... You should be able to find a good used CDI on ebay and a new ignition coil on ebay.

or just a new full wire harness for 10 bucks with a cdi and coil already attached.
Keep watching ebay.
Matter of fact, I may have one or 2 laying around but will take me days to look.

Very fun machines. Simply can't go wrong at 50$

I had a few minutes this weekend so I started looking into the 110. Im going to have lots of trike questions in this thread, so please be patient with me. This is going to be a "fix up" on a budget.

I had a real tough time getting one of the forms off the front spindle, and it looks like this was the culprit. What is this part called?

That first part is the axle collar, been a while since I tore apart a 110 but I thought it centered the axle in the forks.

I am not aware of any glue that would with stand the abuse of pull starting. I would think any pull start handle could be made to work on a budget.

Yes there is a gasket for the pull cover. And yes the axle collar does help to center the axle in the forks. But your collar looks to be wore out. You can find all this stuff on this site or e-bay.

Today on ebay I bought rear brakes, a coil, a CDI and kill switch box.

My total investment so far including the machine cost and vinager is $109. If all the electrical parts come in this weekend and I'm able to find out the valve clearances to adjust them, I'll see if I can get it to start.

I'm also still in search of an axle collar for the front t fork to sit on. I have not seen one on ebay for less than $15.

powdered oxalic acid works better and faster and you can get it from most hardware stores . . its called driveway cleaner or wood bleach . . mix it with water . . either way, if you put a box of bb's or 1/4" nuts in there with the acid or cleaner and swish it around while being careful not to get acid on your clothes [the vinegar isnt that bad] then they will break off a lot of the rust too . . i'm surprised at how well the vinegar worked though.

if you haven’t thought about it, I would seal the gas tank once 100% of the rust is gone . . below is one of a few decent products to use but tank must be cleaned with lacquer thinner then dry before application and it should not be humid out when you use this . . 1 pint is all you need but most products are 1 qt . . you will need to seal the gas can so you can turn it upside down . . remove whatever you use to seal it with every 30 seconds to relieve pressure in tank.

Thanks for the valve clearances. I tried a bunch of nuts and tiny bolts in an old generator gas tank and they got some of the rust out, but not all of it and it was not worth the trouble of fishing them out with a magnet afterwards, and I'm a little worried about damaging the fuel tube neck. I rinsed out the tank with water then several times with fresh gas, and left a little gas in it. I'll check it out this weekend and see if it has rusted again.

no prob, you're welcome . . as far as the rust goes, i can basically guarantee you that it will rust again, however, now that the big stuff is gone, you can just look at it periodically and do a similar procedure when it gets bad enough . . Keep in mind that even though you may not be getting chunks of rust in your carburetor, if the gas that comes out of the tank turns pale yellow or darker, it is from the rust contaminating it and it is not a great idea to run gas like that.

The oxalic acid should easily eat the rest of that rust without having to put nuts or bb's in the tank . . you can mix around 1 lb of it to warm water and let it soak . . it should be gone in 24-48 hours . . you can also do the same thing if you want to clean heavy rust out of your cooling system like old, pre 1980's cars can get in their engines and radiastors.

It looks like I am going to have to split the wheels.
is this how the gasket is supposed to look? And do I need to buy three orings or can I use rtv silicone to seal them?

I got a couple headlights, mint front fender, set of rear fenders with some small cracks, misc. hardware like castle nuts, pull start handle, spare coil, spare CDI and a seat in rough shape. The 2 piece rims have a wide groove between them and a o-ring. The blue stuff looks like RTV and way too much was used. I have used red RTV to seal up the rear rims on a ATC90 before and it worked great. I sanded and painted the inside of the rims as they were as rusted or worse than yours, makes the RTV seal up better I'd think too. Make sure to let the RTV setup before airing up and wipe off any excess. I'd guess the o-rings are out of production, but if you can find the right size one, that would work as well.

Those 125M fenders look pretty nice, I have a couple of those machines I'm slowly working on fixing up, one more OEM, and another I'm hoping to fab a Chinese engine into.

The axle spacer centering washer things are out of production. Based on part numbers the 85 atc110 and atc125m share the same part. Other years have different part numbers, but I don't know if they changed size at all, I'd guess most/all would interchange. Besides centering the axle, it also keeps the front wheel from coming off even with the axle bolt loose.

Of what I have seen, these machines have a pretty big rot problem for the seat pans, good luck on saving the one you have, looks like it is a good start at least! If you are staying as cheap as possible, I have had one machine that had the seat literately glued to the fenders with super weather strip adhesive. NOT fun to remove!

I would not use that because it will cause it to keep rusting I unless it is neutralized by electrolysis . . I use oxalic acid mpowder mixed around 1 lb per gallon . . pure oxalic acid powder is best . . some concrete driveway cleaners and wood bleaches are made from it and are avail at home depot etc . . if the rust is heavy you can add a box of bb's to it and carefully shake it around to speed things up . . it might take 2 days to clean heavy rust . . vinegar works on light rust . . neutralize with 1/4 box of baking soda or soda without salt is better.

The muriatic acid was a bad idea. I mixed the acid 40/60 acid to water, and it was in the tank 15 minutes. It ate a hole in the tank that now I have to weld. Also, after flushing the acid and neutralizing it with baking soda and water I immediately put the tank in front of a big fan. I checked on it 30 minutes later and the entire tank was already covered in light rust. How is anyone supposed to keep the tank from rusting while it's drying before the li er can be put in?

The tanks have a light coating from the factory, i have read that the material they use is ate away with the ethanol in today's gas though and that is the primary reason they rust out so easy.

If the tank was nasty inside, pin holes are common. You can braze it up, just make sure to fill the tank with water to ensure all gas fumes are out of the tank.

I'd say braze the tank, and put in a gas tank sealer to coat the inside of the tank. Not sure what exact prep you have to do to make it last though.

I'm just curious why you didn't use a rust remover. I know they are not cheap but not crazy either. Plus it will remove the rust (tannic acid) and not flash rust it. Ideally really easy to do.

I did not see tannic acid locally in store. It looks like I skipped a step with my liner attempt.
Instructions on the red kote can said immediately after neutralizing the acid I should rinse with acetone then immediately apply the liner. I'll try again today.

There are numerous threads about which coating works the best. I know for sure you have to follow the instructions to a tee no matter which one you use. Do not rush any step. I dried my tank with a heat gun on low for about an hour after rinsing and applying the sealing coat. My preference is the POR15, 3 part system. As for your seat pan question, I've used thick "puck board" cut to the exact shape of the fender indent to make a pan. Glue the foam on and wrap the martial around and staple from below. Place on the fender and screw up from below. Puck board will bend and stay bent when heated slightly. If you're still stuck on rim O-Rings, a decent automotive parts store should be able to make you what you want. They have kits of o-ring material that gets cut and glued together to make the right diameter.

I was able to coat the tank today using acetone to dry it before lining. I also made my seat cover and it turns out I should have made some attempt to smooth the foam out before covering. Oh well.

I am missing something needed to mount the fenders, though. I swore I bought everything I needed but I can't find another piece of hardware. What is the piece I'm missing that the latch attaches to?

I found the fender bracket and mounted it. I put tubes in all the tires but one tire had a tiny nail in it which put a hole in the tube. I'll have to take the wheel apart again tomorrow and patch the tube. If I get that done and the tank is done curing, dare I say it will be ready for a test ride!

Tube is patched. Just waiting for the tank liner to cure. I need to take the seat cover back off and glue some foam on where chunks are missing. I also need a lid to the trunk.

It looks a heck of a lot better than when you got it. And I'm sure you've learned a ton along the way. Hopefully it's moving under it's own power soon.

Unfortunately I'm heading out of town for 2 weeks now and did not get to test ride it. I could still smell a little bit of the red kote in the tank so I dont think it's quite done curing. I'm $297 into the project which is more than I wanted to spend, but it will be worth it if it drives good.

Just a final post for this thread...

A pic of my mom riding the 110. She thought it was fun.

Where do these go?

the two small ones are for the front of the tank to mount on.

Where do these go?

the two big ones go in two holes in the top of the frame near the rear . . it looks like they are seat/fender bumpers.
