I figured since I am cleaning my 86 200x that I should start a thread. I'm sure there are others but it's a good way for me to get acquainted with you all and 3WW.

I call this a recommission vs. a restoration. First of all I found that a true restoration for practically any ATC is extremely expensive.........that is to do it correctly. A recommission is going thru the machine, cleaning, repairing, replacing worn parts and very limited re finishing. It's kinda keeping it's original state original with improvements. All this is what a recommission is to me. You need a good candidate for a recommission and I feel this 86 is just that.

Just a brief history. ......I purchased 3 ATCs from a nice family who purchased them new. I picked up an 85 350X and 200x and an 86 200x for $850. They were not using them and haven't for some time and wanted the room. I only had room for 2 and wanted to keep the 350X and 200 but my wife liked the 86 so I had to change my plans and ended up selling the 350X for $4000. At that point I was shocked (pleasantly) at what these went for and also wished I didn't sell the 350X. With that said....my 2 200s are going to get cleaned up and used.

I will post from time to time as things move along. Where it stands now is it had a bent exhaust valve. That was repaired and am going to reassemble the motor. Any input from any of you fine folks would be greatly appreciated. I am always in the learning process. Thank you.

Very sweet x, I love that model. They do suck up the funds though. Did it come complete? Does it have the factory fenders and headlight. It's a shame that you couldn't keep the 350x. Although, you made a huge profit which is good.

That appears super low hour. Hardly any paint off the case or frame. Barley used origional front tire. Great price, good keeper!

Will keep pics coming Mr. Clean.

Yea I wish I never sold the 350X. What's worse is someone told me it was worth about 6 or 7K. Honest to God I freaked out. When a person on Ebay said I will give you 4K I instantly said yes. I really had absolutely no idea the value of these ATCs. After doing a little homework after the fact I got a little more educated and also shocked. For the 350X I purchased a new master cylinder and front fork boots for $200 NOS. That's also when I knew a complete restoration was fiscally out of the question.

The 200X has all original bodywork, lights, etc. It was used by grandma. These 2 200x s I have are not in the condition of the 350X but the 86 will clean up nicely. Thank m you for your comments and honestly......I am continuing to learn. Anyone's input is greatly appreciated. If anyone thinks I am messing up on something please tell me.

Thank you. Well.....just like with the 350X. .....the original rear tires had little wear. I guess they took them off and opted for the ohtsu pro wedges for the desert. I am going to clean them up and install them.

Reassembling the engine with new valves, top gaskets, etc. Doing a little cleaning as well.

Putting things back together. The carb was cleaned. Both brakes were not working but now the rear has been cleaned and rebuilt. Either the rear shock was worn or it was set up for a rider that weighed 40 lbs....so I adjusted the preload. Now it is better suited for a modern Americans weight. Next will be the front end. Fix the brakes and install new fork seals.

Cool bike, I love the '86s. The level you've taken it to so far is inspiring. Mine could do with a deep-clean like that.

Congratulations, welcome, and please keep us posted.

Thank you. I love your 250......I would love yours or a Big Red........one will be my next one hopefully. By the looks of your photo I think you live on the same street as my nephew. Are you by the mall? I don't know Simi that well so excuse my ignorance with streets and stuff.

I honestly paid $850 for all 3. Plus I got 3 classic helmets in their original boxes and sets of ohtsu pro wedges. After the fact I was so bummed that I sold the 350X that I deleted all pictures of it. But in the new member commencement there is a photo of the 3.

Yes....I feel fortunate. I honestly and humbly did not understand the current values of these old ATCs. In a way now.......I wonder if I want this 200x being used and abused by my wife. I always take care of my vehicles but after finding replacement parts (especially fenders and plastics) being seemingly extinct......I wonder if caution is in order.

Yea...I agree with you all. I will use it just very gently.

I started it today and it ran like new. It is extremely quiet and sounds like a sewing machine. I do not have a lot of experience with ATCs but this seems very quiet. With the 350X and it's Bassani exhaust it sounded like a boss. The 85 200x was very throaty and had a nice sound....even with its stock exhaust. But this was way more quiet than I thought it would be.

I didn't ride it as the chain was not installed, the clutch cable was not installed and the beater tires were not installed. Overall I'm very pleased.

Just finished a couple more items. Clean, de-rusted the original chain and installed. The rear fender put back on and the clutch cable installed. I'm slowly working on the front and tomorrow I will overhaul the front brakes and a few other things. I have a Maier front disk guard in great condition but don't know if I'm going to install it........also a black one for the back.

I guess I could of purchased a new chain but the original is nice to still have installed.

Bent exhaust valve, you told us in the original post, I was amazed at how quiet they are too. My super X has a stock 200x exhaust and I love how quiet it is. Don't let it fool you, they ride very good and have decent power in stock form.

Yea they are quiet. I haven't ridden the 86 yet but the 85 200x was way quicker than I thought. Easy to flick around and quick on the acceleration. .......... very nice.

This is the case protector. As you can see this bike has been used. Nearly sand blasted off the finish on the lower side of it. I haven't painted anything on this bike and I kinda don't want to but as you can see......if any part of this bike needs refinishing it's this. The other side looks like it will clean up. Maybe I will just clean it up and try to maintain its original theme. I never felt blemishes took away from somethings originality but sometimes added to it. With my 85 200x that's different because that is in need of a restoration.

Maier Front Disc brake covers \ protectors. .........thoughts?

I already have my thoughts on these covers but since I am new to the game was wondering what others thought about them. These are nearly new and would look nice on the 86 but maybe was thinking about installing them on my 85 200x. Since that will have nearly all Maier plastics as the others are not good maybe install on that and leave this kinda original. On the 85 200X I wanted to do a little performance upgrades as well.

There is many more upgrades available for the 83-85 200x so I say that's a good idea. The 86 is in such good shape the way it is that it should be left stock. I'm not a real fan of the plastic guards. I have never owned any but I feel like they would just get ruined in Louisiana. A lot of people like how they look. I like the way trikes looked in the 80's.

Just a few more things done. Overhauled the front brake system....changed fork oil.....cleaned front wheel and tire and some other stuff. I wanted to get new gators for it but cannot find NOS anywhere. Maybe I'll look again or call the dealer. This weekend will clean and install the original ohtsu P/V tires.

You are right the original ones are black with the cap on the end. This is still an amazing build. Love the pictures and keep them coming please. I am kinda doing the same thing you are with my 86. Mine is in a lot rougher shape than yours though and it is a rider and not a museum piece.

What tips can you give on cleaning and restoring some of the surfaces. Are you using any touch up paint at all? If so what type. I don't hardly see a single chip or rust anywhere. I have some Colorite Honda Passion Red R109 paint coming soon. Have you ever used this? What paints and/or cleaning supplies are you using and where? I would appreciate any advice you could give. thanks

You walked into the deal of the century. For $850 around here, you get a 3 wheeler that looks like it was hit by a bazooka.

I have a 1985 200X and like another has already asked, if you have any leftover OEM parts, please let me know. I am currently searching for:

OEM rear tail light assembly (all of it)
OEM handlebars
OEM muffler

Any spare OEM parts for a 1985

You have a beautiful 86. I wish I had your luck when buying toys.

If you have an 85 you should be able to find parts all over the place in abundance for cheap.

86-87 is where it gets difficult. They made a lot more 85's and below than the 86-87's.

OEM rear tail light assembly (all of it) just sold some of these on Feebay few months back for practically nothing. advertised them on here and nobody wanted them.

Well I'm also looking for a complete OEM airbox along with all the vacuum lines. I'm still not permitted in the want-ad section and won't be until early August. If you come across or know of a place where I can get these items, please let me know.

Waiting sucks to get into there but is worth it. I just recently bought a complete airbox for my 86 with a lid for only 30 bucks on Ebay! It was only posted on Ebay for 15 minutes until I got it! You just have to be at the right time to get stuff.

As far as I know this is really the only good site/forum for our trikes that I have found. I have bought some stuff from members here in the past and they have been pretty good to me on prices. Good luck.

Thank you for your post.

To be honest.....this 86 was in nice shape to begin with. There were some areas that needed painting but I did not paint anything. As far as some of the stuff I use I probably use what most use. Mcguiars, phosphoric acid for flash cleaning the fasteners, I like autosol metal polish because it works good on specialized alloys, etc.

As far as painting things I can usually find paints that closely match original finishes. The Tahitian Red or Daytona Orange Honda used on the old CR line, etc..... Is an exact copy of Classic GM truck orange. I used that paint to finish my CB750.

The Eastwood Argent Silver wheel finish is a very close match to original Japanese case finishes and like what is on the case protector. It can also be cleared. Just some things I learned over the years of successes and complete failures.

Well rode it around today and it felt great. My 85 200x must have a spot on the tires or a slight bent axle as this thing was super smooth. The only thing was the carb fouled up again.....so it wouldn't idle. I thought I cleaned the tank thoroughly but when I took the carb off it was yellowish and the slow jet was plugged.

What a difference between the 85 and 86. Besides the 85 being a little rougher.....and it starts easy and accelerates smooth.....there is little comparison between the 2. When folks say there's a difference between the 86 87 to previous years I know what they are talking about now.

You know you have a real good candidate for a recommission. From I can tell in the photos it looks nice. How's the swingarm and that area look?

I took a closeup look at your grips and I see what you mean with that end cap. I looked on ebay and it was $54 new NOS.

How do you like the Maiers? I'm going that route for my 85. Those Maier plastics are nearing the endangered species list. I've found new NOS plastics are nearly extinct.

This last photo shows the indent in the tank. I've contemplated refinishing it but since the original finish is very nice then I will forgo it and consider it "character "

There's still quite a bit more items to finish on it. It seems it's the little things that go unnoticed yet take time. This is my next project. It runs, starts and stops very well

Bought my grips new from my local Honda shop. I think they were 20 bucks for the pair. I don't think these have changed much over the years. They looked just like the original ones.

Got my fender on tonight. I think these fenders feel pretty rugged and will hold up well. I just wish they fit a little better. Going to have to trim them a little bit to match the tank. Not sure why they didn't fix that part. It won't look so aftermarket once I get the decals cut and on there.

My rear end is in need of some attention. I know I need some bearings replaced for sure. Maybe new chain/sprocket. Scared to even mess with it right now. Going to ride it this summer. Maybe over the winter months.!?!?

Wow, yours looks very nice. That is what I am going for. You should have seen mine when I first bought it. I saved it from an early death..

I didn't mean to take over your thread here but just like sharin my progress with you and anyone else. I might just start another thread or we can just keep this going. it's all good. All your help is appreciated.

Will post pictures in a few days after decals are on. Then going to look for a local body shop to paint the tank.

That new Maier is really looking nice. That changes how your whole bike looks. To be honest it looks better than I thought.

Keep posting pics and updates. I'm almost nearing the end of my spruce up.......I'd love to see your progress as it moves along. After owning the 2 generations of 200x I've really come to appreciate the last generation. However the first gen is still closer to my heart.

Got my decals on today. Man I love the smell of Rapid tac...

What do ya think? I think it helps the Maier fender look more original. Thanks to knappyfeet for the pictures. I kinda used them to reproduce these decals. Much appreciated

Next on the list fork boots and get an estimate for the tank....

Do you or anyone have a good source for some fork boots? I see the cheap $20 chinese reproductions all the time but have heard some bad things about some of them. Especially with the fit and durability. Also some of them don't look the right shade of blue.

Those fenders look good. Do they use the rolled metal brace like the OEM fender did? The brace held the fender sides up, bolts to bottom of fender, gold anodized color.

I suggest you take on the carrier bearing replacement before you do much riding. I neglected mine and when I fixed it, i had ruined the internal center piece that rotates and adjusts the chain! I got to purchase that and that was plenty not enjoyable.
The bearings, seals, o-rings....... not a major repair. I would imagine Honda parts under $75. Worth not letting go.

You must be talking about the Fender Support Stay Part#80116-HB5-020. I took a picture of how it looks on the Maier fender. As you can see some dumbazz cut this one and now I am looking for a replacement. They have NOS on ebay for right now for 55 but I cant see paying that for a small piece of bent metal. Looking to maybe bend and make my own unless I find a cheaper used one somewhere. They sent some L brackets with the fender to drill and bolt through the fender after looping it through the stay. I don't feel comfortable drilling through my new fender taking the chance it will weaken it. and might try to epoxy them on. Would epoxy even stick to this plastic?

As far as the carrier bearing replacement, would you happen to have any good links to parts needed and maybe special tools needed. Any video and/or step by step tutorials would be great. I am pretty handy with tools but when it comes to this it really scares the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro out of me. My only fear is getting it all apart and then not knowing how to put it all back together. Could have my Honda guy do it but it might be another small fortune...lol

Any help would be great...thanks..

The fender support stay probably snapped off while riding. They break from jumping or hanging off the side, putting too much leg and backside weight over it......Finally snapping off mine broke but after years of riding hard. I bought one off 3bay for like $65 , just to have one around. It's in a box of someday parts.
I am not much of a computer person as far as attaching photos and that, at this time, which I know cheats me and others. I will have to catch up someday.Your photo attaching skills are a big plus on getting help on any project on the site.
I remember that I let the bearings go because I had a the hub welded to the axle and I knew I would have to cut the axle to take the axle out.The hubs loosened up when I put 4” wheel spacers and 8" tires and rims on, ruining the hub maybe axle splines too and I didn't catch it because they had never loosened with that quickness before. Being intimidated and an expense repair to come, the machine got welded up. Worked great, bearings went out later on, continued to ride it. So bearings were out and sat for a couple years. So.... Junk axle, bought one of those on my bearing replacement project too plus a hub.
I can remember the axle pulls out of the swingarm to the left side, if you are behind the 200x looking at it all. No special tools except some large wrench to loosen the axle nuts. You have to remove the brake disc and the chain sprocket, remove the rear brake. No biggie, no pressing or heating, just looking and thinking really. Didn't have to beat on anything, came apart easy. Might need a pair of snap ring pliers and a red scotchbrite pad for some cleaning up.

I will see if the manual says anything about it later today. You can download one on here if you didnt know, search manual. I worked on mine trying to find spark more, most of the night. Only motor problem I have ever had but it is being a real tough one! I am doing some maintence and sprucing up on it. So I hope to trace the problem down. The manual keeps sending me to the brand new handlebar switch I just bought.

Partzilla..com would have a blowup of the axle assembly. Section 13 in manual has blowup. You could try epoxy on the support, should work but will probably break loose at some point. If you decide to drill the fenders post a picture if not too much trouble. I wouldn't believe it would weaken the plastic, just look not original. Maybe try without bolting first like you thought.
You boys have some nice trikes, you'll love em.Thanks for sharing them photos.

Yea I wish I really knew where to find those fork protectors. I purchased some for a honda 125 motorcycle and they fit but they were smaller and the quality was not acceptable......they came from Thialand. There's other NOS for the 85 200X but they are wrong for the 86 200X.

I heard of a guy that bought 4x4 shock boots at auto zone for his trike, how they fit, not sure. I might see what they have someday. Price was under $20 for the pair. Honda dealship may have ideas, call around with the measurements.I am totally bootless and have been a long while.

Had the chance to put these 2 brothers thru their paces. I installed the ohtsu pro wedges on both. And although I am not completely finished with the 86 200X it was still ready enough for riding. And although you can noticeably see the difference in generations the elder brother was quite capable. In fact I am anxious to start my 85 200x project because a nice overhaul I feel will shorten the performance gap between the two.

Thanks. I just created them mostly off your pictures you sent and just used Flexisign sign program and cut them on my Graphtec vinyl cutter. I can do some for you if you want some. Just PM me some time and I can fix you up. I just can only do single colors and not printed stuff.

I do have the 86 200x Service manual in PDF format downloaded from somewhere on here but the pictures are pretty fuzzy. I would love a good Youtube video of it!!

Here is a pic my axle. Of course the left side hub is welded on. Can I still pull the axle out and change the bearings? There is a little play in the rear axle but not real bad. I still think I want to do this now. I looked but not sure which bearings to get. I see bearing kits from all over the place. Just want to make sure I get the right ones and quality ones too. Do I also need orings? They are not part of the kits I seen. Any info where you got yours would be greatly appreciated.

If I do get the axle out ok, what would be a good and cheap way of getting them to look new, of course other than having them zinc coated or something.

Here's a couple of pages out of the manual........maybe even more fuzzy. It will slide out the left side so your o.k..

There's really on 2 ways to clean up the rear....other than to replate it. One is to paint it. I think Eastwood sells some cad/zinc paints in gold/yellow or the bluish tints. The other is to de rust it with a rust remover then clean up the metal afterwards. I used Amosol metal polish and it's pretty good on steel and specialized alloys.

Aside from the NOS grips that I might purchase and perhaps something I overlooked.......the 200X is complete. The front brakes feels a tick spongy but I can live with it and even if it worsens I have a new Honda NOS master on standby.

I have these aftermarket parts that I did not install and in some cases....removed. The master protector, light protector, new Maier guards and a rear cooler rack that the coolers color closely matches the seat........all of which might find its way to the 85 200X. I'm getting use to the stock look of the bike and believe these aftermarket goodies do not lend itself to that look. Like mentioned previously......the 85 200X will require Maier items and seat covers, painting, etc that remove the stock appearance.

I know what you mean. How do you like the 125? DJ (djm0242) gave a recommendation that model. I cant seem to find one nearby. There's an 85 110 that's for sale.....looks really nice and original but is a little pricey. I don't necessarily mind paying for something that is nice, original and have good plastics. I've found over the years that purchasing something cheap and in need of major work ends up costing far more than a nice one....usually.

Well got my bearings and realized I ordered the front and not the rear axle kit! Ah well the right ones are coming next week. Anyways I am starting to remove rear axle so as to be ready for when the bearings get here. I have noticed my rear hub is very loose on the splines with a lot of play - not good. After pulling the hub off I notice the splines are rusted pretty bad. Probably why they welded the other one on. I am now thinking about looking for a new axle and hubs. I know these are almost impossible and very hard to find in good shape. After doing some research I find that you can use an axle out of an 84 250R to get to fit in the 86. If anyone has either axle to sell reasonably let me know please. If not I might just put it all back together after replacing bearings and wait till the hub spins off later and then weld it. Maybe by then I can come across a replacement. thanks.

I did a good vinegar soak an all parts for a few days and buffed everything out with good ole Autosol. As you can see in the picture all parts are almost chrome like. I scored some carrier o-rings off Ebay and waiting on them to start to put her all back together. Really couldn't soak the rear axle so am doing it with a fine brass wheel on the grinder then will buff them out. If it starts to rust out later then will probably just paint them.

Using the VHT here but have read about the PJ1 paints. Have been reviewing some of the case paints out there and PJ1 has come up a lot as a good paint to use. Might try that when I take my motor off the frame to paint.

Here are some pics of the progress:

220867 Silver I used VH1 Engine Enamel. Black I used VHT Chassis. I am missing one of the black rubber bumpers on the skid plate, anyone have an extra one?

220868220869 VHT here. Pegs are dusty and actually look better than that.

A few hours of wet sanding and using the buff wheel with some Tripoli and some Auto sol, I think they are as good as they are gonna get. Wasn't much clearcoat left to remove after so many years. Also while I was at it I buffed and polished the forks and installed the new shock boots. I think they are a little too bright of a blue from stock but they were cheap and even came with the clamps. I sanded down the front fender to clean up all the scratches. Debating on whether to get some Maier front fenders or just keep the oem. I like the oem look better.
