Hello all! Today, in between jobs, I spotted an abused 200x in a driveway. The motor was out of it and back fenders smashed. Figured why not ask if it was for sale. Guy was moving and didnt want to take it with him. New chain and back tires with one ride on them before the motor died. I got it pretty cheap and it came with a binch of motor parts. I checked the vin numbers on the engines and the trike is an 83, one 83 200x engine, one 84 200x wngine, and 2 81 xr200 engines. 3 heads so far, all covers ect looks like a spare brake res, only 0ne 192 cc cyl and one 242 (i think) cyl. I might try and get it back together and see if she will go. I also snagged a not running 83 185 for free friday. I currently ride an 82 185 and it runs and looks good. What do i do? I read that i can swap parts from other motors on to my 185 for more power, would any of this help that? Thank you for reading.

Nobody? I was thinking now of rebuilding one of the XR engines now so i get the 6 speed. Good idea?

I thought I had replied right after you posted up the score but see I did not do something right,
So I'll type it again.
SCORE for sure.
Not sure on the motor swap out but certainly sounds interesting

Others on here have gone the 6-speed 200X route, I have not. I was going to until I saw how narrow the 6-speed gears are, and decided to stick with what I had. Also, there are 4 different 5-speed gearsets, and 2 different 6-speed gearsets between the CB/CL/SL, the XR, XL, 200X, and the utility trikes. The late model CRF230's have yet another 6-speed gearset. Some are desireable, others have some gear ratios that would be pretty bad in a 200X. I can post a chart comparing the ratios if you are interested. One more thing, to use an XR bottom end you have to split the cases and swap in the 200X kickstart shaft, it is different due to the 2 extra gears used to make it kick forward.

Here's what I have written down in my 200X build scrap book. I found the late model CRF230 info online, but didn't write it down. One other thing I learned when I took apart the 200x, an XL185, and an XR185, and an early and a late CB125, is not only are the ratios different, but the gears themselves are in a different order on the shafts in each specific trans (like 3rd and 4th are in each other's spot) so the shift drum has to stay with the gearset you pick or you'll end up with gears that shift out of order!

ratios are listed first thru top gear:
early CB/CL/SL100/CB125: (2.500)(1.722)(1.333)(1.083)(.923)- I have one of these bikes, has nice gear spacing
late CB125 (after '76 IIRC):(2.769)(1.882)(1.450)(1.173)(1.00)- never ridden one with this trans
XL185: (2.769)(1.722)(1.272)(1.000)(.777)- I have an XL185, this trans is WIDE ratio- giant gap 1st-2nd
XR185/XL125: (3.083)(1.941)(1.450)(1.130)(.923)(.785)
ATC200X: (2.769)(1.941)(1.450)(1.130)(.923)
XR200: same first thru fifth as the 200X, but with a 0.785 6th gear

Sorry, when I typed them in the ratios all lined up over each other which made comparison easy, don't know why it didn't post that way. I also don't know how the frowny guy got in there...

Thats great! Thank you for the info. It looks like i may have aquired another xr200 that runs, so i may just end up trying that gear set and seeing what its like. I pulled apart the blown motor that came with my 200x and some metal on both sides of the piston under the wrist pin is missing. Both skirts are intact and the lower rod bearing is seized. He liked to rev it out.
