Hello guys,
I've been working on this trike for a bit now and I still cant figure out what is wrong.
Its a 81 Honda ATC 185s that has no spark. I've tested all the electrical and coils in the engine. I've tested continuity across all the grounds. The CDI unit seems to test out fine. I've even gone as far as to replace the coils within the engine and on the frame as well as resurfaced every ground I found. The pickup at the top of the engine tests proper as well. All this is from the specs laid out in the manual I have. After all that wire work I don't know where to go from here. Anyone know of someone in the Central Washington area that could help me figure out what is wrong with my trike? I like this trike and don't want to get rid of it just because I cant ride it. Thanks and any help or thoughts on what to do next would be much appreciated.

First question. Have you painted the engine and frame?

Nope. The frame is the same as when I got the bike. I've even cleaned off all spots where the motor grounds to the frame.

Go over the insulation on the wires if they are original. Cracked insulation can cause problems. I suppose that you put a new plug wire and spark plug in the motor, yes? What about the ignition switch?

Im fairly certain the 81 185 has a coil with a wire that screws into the coil and is held on by a ferrule nut and that the sparkplug cap screws on the other end as well.

Check to make sure that both these screw-on connections are good. Sometimes they get corroded and stop getting a good connection.

I like to trim off 1/2 inch on both ends of the naked wire and then screw the cap back on and the wire back on the coil just to be sure I get a good, fresh, bare wire connection.

Ok, I'll try going over the connections again.

BWA HA HA, She lives. She is fixed now. A very small pin attached to the crankshaft for the small top exciter coil was way loose. An wasnt allowing the top magnet to turn setting off the coil. HA HA HA. But now I cant get the carb to not flood the engine out. Even tho it idles just fine.

in my experience its not even worth saving these old carbs. I would replace it with one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-ATC185-Carburetor-Carb-1980-NEW-/121703988834?hash=item1c561f7e62. I have these carbs on my 200x my 200m and my 125m and they really are bolt on adjust the idle and go.
