I have a 1984 honda 200es big red. Cant figure this out, no battery in it but will not pullstart without jumper cables hooked up, everything works when running like lights ect with jumper cables hooked up but if i unhook jumper cables it stays running just fine but kills all lights. I need some advice please.

Sounds like you may need to test your alternator windings, I believe there are two separate windings on 200 engines. Here's a link to download the manual if you havent already. http://www.drivehq.com/file/ShowFolder.aspx?G=1&shareID=233462

Is there a keyed ignition switch?

I have tested alternator and has correct voltage coming out when running. Has ignition switch, will kill engine if turned off.

It may run without the ignition switch connected but, the electronics will not work. I think the battery completes the circuit.

Ohm test the alternator per the manual voltage can still be correct with a bad alternator

I do know u do not have to have a battery to pullstart or for the lights to work, lights working running oviously. 1 more thing, after i hook up jumper cables, pullstart, then unhook jumper cables there is no power at the positive battery cable.

Ohm test the alternator per the manual voltage can still be correct with a bad alternator, you shouldn't need a battery to run or lights or anything it just for starting.

Yeah im aware u dont need a battery for anything but electric start. Ive tested everything i can think of but im just stumped. I will ohm test when i get home, and any other ideas feel free to comment. Thanks in advance fellas

Sorry my phone double posted that somehow, and i just realized i sent you the old link for manuals. Here is the new one http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/
I can't remember exactly how to test it but I think its one wire to ground should be 20-40 ohms and the other wire to ground 100-500 ohms. One of those being the alternator and the other being the pulse generator.

Alright checked the manual. The black/red wire should have 100-400 ohms, that is your exciter coil.

Well i ohmed the black red wire, the exiter coil, and its all over the place as fao as omhs. Goes negative to the 400s, just jumps everywhere. Could that be the problem

Check your voltage regulator it may be junk
