Not nearly as cool as yours but, I finally got around to doing a project on my '78 K-10 that I have been putting off for far too long...

I wanted to address some surface rust issues on the bottom of the body. I sanded, primed, and applied Duplicolor roll-on bedliner. I chose to do the bedliner as it should stand up against rocks being flung by the tires better than regular paint... Truck needed a bath when I took the pics, but it came out better than I expected. :D I was able to do the bed rails and almost the complete bed.

A little at a time, I'm trying to make my old truck (that's as old as I am) better and better.

Pics show before, during, and after.

I'm a Chevelle Guy!

Here is my 1972 LS-5 SS454 Chevelle Convertible. One of only an estimated 70 built. One of only 30 known to exist. Number 24 in the national registery.

Here are me and my brother with our Chevelle's taken in around 2008 at the Annual "Chevelle-A-Bration" in Goodletsville. The largest gathering of Chevelle's in the world. We took a top three award with the Blue and White 72 Convertible. My brothers car is the Silver and Black 1970 L34 SS396 Coupe.

Mr. Farrow, you Sir take the cake!! I'm not a car guy, have never owned a car. But a Chevelle is on the top of a very short list of cars I would love to own...and it just so happens the '72 SS454 is my favorite among them! Always loved that "Don't eff with me" look of the early 70's Chevelle. :)

To say "very nice" would be the understatement of my life! :beer

This was probably the only cool ride (to me at least) I had out of College back in 1988. 1969 Cadillac Calais we had repainted in Charcoal Grey.

My first real car was a 1968 SS396 Chevelle Super Sport. Got it in 1982. This pice was taken sometime around then.

My brother and I's second car was a 1970 LS-5 SS454 Chevelle Convertible. This is the one I wish I had back. Alot of good times in that car. It was an all number matching 60K mile car when we got it sometime in 1984.

Some of you may or may not know but my brother and I are identical twins...... We have restored many cars over the years. We have two that we are working on now that when we get finished with them they will be our final two. He has a triple black 1970 SS396 Chevelle Convertible and I have a triple black 1970 SS396 Coupe. That is going to be our "Twin Thing". Gonna be cool to drive them and show them at the same time. :)

Nice Chevelles! Not a sports car by any means but its cool to me. My 1983 Buick Electra Park Avenue. Soon to get a more competent powerplant and brakes. A 307 just isn't enough. I plan on doing a full restore on it eventually but for now its a weekend cruiser this thing burns a LOT of gas.

All excellent rides! Farrow, your '72 LS-5 is sick!!!! Out of curiosity what's the HP on that OEM 454?

In 72 they changed the way they calculated the HP. The 71 LS5 is the exact same engine as the 72 LS5......In 71 it was rated at 365HP. In 72 it was rated at 270HP.
They calculated it from the rear wheel in 72.

As I have looked through my old service manuals that cover from about '69 through the first several years of square body trucks, I noticed that around that same time the HP ratings dropped significantly with the trucks as well... I also noticed that the RPM listed that they achieved those numbers with were significantly lower too... As best I can remember and the exact numbers may be off, I recall something like peak HP for SB V-8's was shown at about 4500 RPM in the earlier years, and then when the HP numbers dropped, the RPM was something like 3400-3800..

I often wondered why the change in numbers and more importantly, the change in RPM that the HP was recorded.

Did this change in the trucks occur for the same reasons you listed about the Chevelles???

The was horsepower was advertised was changed by a federal mandate. Before manufacturers could list horsepower with NO accessories, no fan, waterpump, alternator, or even air cleaner, just the motor on a dyno cell. That's used today by engine builders, called GROSS HP OUTPUT.
For '72, it was decided that they wanted the advertised horsepower to more accurately reflect what the car would have in the real world. Therefore, they had the engines tested with accessories, which resulted in NET HP OUTPUT. Both are measured at the flywheel, but the drop is partially due to the heavier load on the engine, partially due to smog equipment starving the motors, and partially due to a further drop in compression.

Keeping the spirit of the thread, here's couple of pics I was able to get from my old man of my 79 AMX (one with me driving, one with him), and a shot of me playing with his 454 powered 79 'bu at a test and tune day. Best with the AMX is 13.26 @ 104, best from my dad in the 'bu was 11.23 @ 120, my best was 11.30 @ 108 in a 1000 ft pass with unbalanced brand new slicks (shook so bad my vision started to blur)
