View Full Version : 300ex Axle in a ATC350x

I've received mixed messages about this. I really want to put an extended 300ex axle in my 86' 350x. Most likely a Lone Star or possibly a Durablue Eliminator. Some people say to use all 300ex hubs including the sprocket hub. Others say to have the 350x sprocket hub pressed on to the 300ex axle. Can someone please shed some light on this subject once and for all? I want to do this right and I don't want to have to worry about sprocket and chain alignment using spacers and what not. I would like to have it all bolt up like it was meant to be there. I don't like having the Durablue Heavy Duty axle being the only aftermarket option for my bike. If I have to get a new carrier and all new hubs I will. Again I would just like it to be correct so I don't have to buy things twice. To anybody out there that has done this swap or knows how to do it properly, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I did some axle investigation back at the beginning of the year for an unknown axle. Turned out to be a 250x or 300EX axle. Buy the aftermarket extended 300EX axle with a 350x sprocket hub pressed on, no spacers needed and you use your 350x sprocket, bolts and carrier. The 300EX wheel hub splines are different from "85-86 350x, ATC250R or '86-89 TRX250R so you'll need wheel hubs. All other Honda hub are the same best option would be extended 400EX. Hope the attached pic's help, the unknown axle is 300EX and you can see the differences, has a 400EX hub on the left and a 200x hub on the right compared to the stock 350x set up. Sprocket misalignment of @ 3/8".

Ha-ha! Thanks guys. I really appreciate the info. I just couldn't get a straight answer on whether or not to use the 300ex sprocket hub or get the 350x one pressed on. And I didn't even think about using the 400ex hubs so thanks for that as well. I've put so much money into this bike and really want a rear axle that has a better guarantee than the Heavy Duty DuraBlue. I spent more on the NOS motor than I did the original bike and built this thing from the frame up so I'm going to make sure the axle and hubs are up to par with the rest of the machine. I will post a build thread with pictures at some point so you guys can see this thing. It's definitely a unique 350x. Just have a few more things to do to finish it up. Also, has anyone had experience with either or both the DuraBlue Eliminator and Lone Star Racing axles and if so is one better than the other? They both offer lifetime warranties so I'm just curios. Thanks again.

to someone who does not race you are not gonna see a difference. some durablue posi locks do not work on lolestar stuff. if your not jumping more then 5ft in the air just got buy a Gforce. I had a durablue on most of my bike. I bought what I could find. I had this entire set up for a 350x a few months ago. Not one person on here wanted it. Funny how ppl are looking for it.

There in lies the problem. Though I haven't raced yet I am not opposed to it and am giving it some serious thought. Also, I jump my bikes more than 350x's should be jumped. I've broken my share of frames. I had Bill at TPC Trikes install their gusset kit on this one and had Race Tech build up my suspension. I wouldn't say I take it easy on my bikes. My last Heavy Duty Axle snapped on me that's why I want to make sure I get the better of the 2. I'm no Pro but I'm also far from a casual rider.

Then buy a new axle with a warranty.

Then buy a new axle with a warranty.

That's the plan. That was the whole point of asking you guys. They only have a one year warranty on the Durablue HD axles for the 350x and that was the only aftermarket axle I could find actually meant for the X. The 300ex axles offer the better warranties and are better made but I just wanted to make sure it was going to work on the bike before I went and spent all that money again. I really appreciate all the help guys. You definitely answered my questions.

I've been in your shoes and done the research. Durablue is the only company that makes a 350x sprocket hub and it uses their spline count. It will not fit on another brand of axle. Get a durablue 300ex eliminator 2+2 axle with a 350x sprocket hub pressed on. Then us the above mentioned rear hubs. It is a direct bolt on and offers an excellent warranty.
I also highly recommend the durablue anti fade brake hub. Works great and completes the "look". Also for a sprocket, you will use a 85 style sprocket, not 86. The sprocket hub from durablue will come with hardware.

Thank you very much for the info. I am currently running a Durablue Heavy Duty +4 but it snapped. Not bent but literally broke off by the left wheel hub. That's why I'm looking for something better. Just out of curiosity, why the 85' sprocket hub? The axle I have now has the 86 style. Is it something I need to do to make the 300ex setup work properly?

The durablue 350x sprocket hub places the sprocket on the outside of the hub instead of inside. Thus eliminating the need for tapered bolts to solve clearance issues. It's not really a 85 or 86 style difference, it's just the way durablue made the 350x sprocket hub.

You're absolutely right. My Durablue axles all came with a sprocket hub that puts the sprocket on the outside and that would solve the clearance issues. I'm happy you brought that up because it was still a concern of mine. I will take your advice and go with a Durablue 300ex eliminator 2+2 axle with a 350x sprocket hub pressed on.

You will love it. Make sure you have the trx 4 wheeler hubs as the axle splines will be different than that of a 350x oem axle.
