I recently picked up my first atc250r and have been working on cleaning it up and doing maintenance to make sure it's safe for it and me. My first question is regarding the difference between an 85 and an 86 atc250r axle. I recieved in extra parts what I believe is a durable +4 axle, but when I place it in an 86 bearing carrier the bearing on the sprocket side seems to be riding on the splines. The sprockets and everything else seem to line up and button up no problem, but there seems to be about 1/8" slack inside the carrier. Does this sound consistent with an 85 axle in an 86 carrier? Thanks in advance!

Wish I could keep the +4 stance...

Are you going to sell the axle. That swingarm looks like a Cal-Fab.If so sweet swingarm .

Do you have a way to confirm that it's an 85 axle? If it indeed is an 85 I would like to sell it. The swingarm is a calfab...thanks! I'm only waiting on the USPS to deliver my exhaust and it's time to rip on it :D

are you planning on racing it then because those parts are for high rpm that work best with a ported cyl and high perf pipe?

The pipe I have coming is a paul turner high rev...hopefully will be a fun field bike...I'm new to the atc's but not 250r's

Thanks in advance!I don't know what you mean by slack inside the carrier, but I do know that an '85 axle cannot be used in an '86 carrier, but you can use an '86 axle in an '85 carrier. It sounds crazy I know, but it's because of the different sprocket hubs between 85 & 86 that make it so.

Is it possible to press a new sprocket hub onto an 85 axle and make it work on an 86 up carrier? Is there any way to confirm this is actually an 85 axle? The slack is a combination of the distance between the bearings inside the carrier and the location of the sprocket hub on the axle (I think).

From what I understand, the 85 & 86 axles are identical, but the sprocket hubs are different. When looking at the axle from the rear of the bike, if the sprocket is on the L side of the sprocket hub, it is an 85 hub. If the sprocket is on the R side of the sprocket hub, it is an 86-89 hub.

I read that same thing regarding the side of the hub the sprocket is on but I guess it didn't sink in. The sprocket is on the correct side for an 86. The sprocket hub on this axle definitely has some wear/damage but it must be too far out of spec to tighten up properly. A stock axle but and brake hub will work with a durable axle correct?

Really appreciate the help!

I checked on DuraBlue's website, and they don't specifically say you can use a stock axle nut & brake hub with their axles, but they do say this about their anti-fade brake hubs, "Note: Most DuraBlue Brake Hubs fit stock and aftermarket axles", which implies a stocker should fit the DuraBlue axle. With LSR 250R axles, I know you can interchange the stock and LSR brake hub & axle nut components.

No problem. I hope you get it all figured out.

Wanted to follow up... I decided to run the stock axle for now...I may buy a new sprocket hub at some point if i decide to run that axle. I think that will fix the problem I was experiencing. Got my exhaust installed and sealed yesterday...and the first start up was today!
