Hello Guys,
after a few requests Loizl forced me to reactivate my old 3WW account, to show you my 250R project, wich was built in parallel to his Tecate 125.
Link to the Tecate 125 Threat:
http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/169883-The-Tecate-125-build?highlight=Tecate+125
I always wanted a badass two stroke trike like the ATC250R, but they are hard to find and to expensive over here in europe. So i desided to built my own.
The design of the trike began during the abroad year in england of my engineering studies. I bought a cheap Honda CR250 engine on ebay uk in great conditon as you can see.

Is your intent to buy it piece by piece then? I seen a post where someone did just that and it was somewhere around 2/3rds more money than buying one and starting from there. I applaud your efforts and can understand your issues sourcing parts in Europe. Good luck!

The project is already finished and the total costs were far below 1000€.
I will now post part by part the complete manifacturing... It just takes some time to upload all the pics and write a few words to every step.

Thank You, with casted aluminum it's tough to anodize any color other than clear or black.
I like them they look like a exotic works coating.

The next step was to construct the swingarm. In oder to safe weight (and because i own a TIG welder:w00t:) it was built entirely from aluminum.
My swingarm was the prototype of Loizls...

That´s now my favorite coating for aluminim parts...
To weld the swingarm straight an improvised jig was weld, (which was bullshit because parts of the jig got stuck in my bearring holes)
For the nexts projects we will built an adjustable swingarm jig which is a lot more stable!

I wonder if there's anything you guys can't make? Making billet engine covers for lateTecate 3's could be very profitable with your abilities. It would be nice to dress up the kxt a little, like they do the 250r's. I am not sure how long it takes to make one though. Maybe not lucrative.
Are you using the kx primary gearing? Or a better way for me to ask is anything different on the kx motor in the Mocate? Have you ever converted a 6 speed 250 kdx motor to anything? Thanks, looking great!

Sticker_sääp, excellent work so far! Please keep the info & pics on the build coming. What year CR motor did you use? Based on the cylinder's color, it appears to be of 1988-90 vintage to me. How do you like the power output?

...with casted aluminum it's tough to anodize any color other than clear or black.I knew that's what happened to the color. I was told the very same thing a long time ago, about anodizing cast aluminum, but wasn't thinking about it when I gathered up a few parts to be anodized red. All of the billet aluminum pieces came out great, but the lone, cast aluminum, engine plug came out the same color. The color wasn't too attrocious, so I went ahead and installed it. I just recently ordered a proper, red anodized, replacement.

Thank you all for appreciating our work!
Best way to anodize cast aluminum is either just do it in black or you cnc mill a replacement and anodize that... But i also like this bourdeaux red so i kept it.
@ Red Rider: its a 88 CR Engine. I wanted this one because than i can interchange parts from my dirtbike which is a 86 model and basically the same engine
@ fieldy: Thank you. We are thinking about building billet parts in the future if there is some demand. But the problem is that in germany there is not much of an vintage dirtbike/atc/atv scene and it will cost a shitload of money on shipping and tax costs...
Its an original gearing, i optimized a bit with the sproket, the first gear is still to short... But thats nothing you can't fix with enough power :-D
I will update you this evening.

Update for today...
The cones that came out from my excle spreadsheet were drawn in my CAD programm to get different measurements for the fitting of the final pipe which will be bent in different dimensions.
220638
That information was used to design the pipe around my trike. A small steel tube with some styrphor circles was bent around the frame to find a way through the trike with enough clearance:
Sorry i dont have a picture with this dummy pipe on my trike...
220639220640220642
We improvised a 3d scanner with 3 rulers for X Y and Z axis and imported the form of the steel tube into the CAD by measuring 30 points.

If the shock is in good shape, doesn't leak, was bleed correctly and charged correctly you can run it in any position you want.
What is the issue?
The Suzuki quads use the shock "upside down" having the reservoir hose mounting at the "bottom" of the shock.
Amazing build!!! I'm EXTREMELY envious of what you have to work with! "Oh I couldn't afford to just go out and buy an intake so I made one while I was sipping coffee and reading the newspaper one morning" lmao

An selfmade pipe needs also a selfmade muffler so there it is:
221233
Before the trike was disasambled for the paintjob i found out that the swingarm was to floppy for the trike, because it was possible to bend it a littl bit when i stood on the outer edge of the nerfbars.
That was not acceptable so i reenforced them with a lot more aluminum

Thank you very much, how did you calculate the cones? Did you draw them with cone layout?
Yes. I used the 2 Stroke Pipe Wizard program (About $25 dollars) and cone layout. What took me FOREVER to understand was how to create each individual section in cone layout. Essentially, all it is, is figuring out the width (or length, as traveling down the pipe) of the section you want on average, and then dividing that into the length of the specific coned area you are dividing. Then you increase the inlet and outlet diameters of each one of those sections, that much. Its VERY easy once you understand the process, but I banged my head against the wall for weeks trying to speak to mathematicians and all sorts of people to figure out how to equally divide the cone chapes, and what the inlet and outlet diameters for each one of those sections would wind up being so I could plug the parameters into cone layout.
When I did mine, I actually created templates for each individual section of the pipe, versus making the entire thing straight and then band sawing pie cuts out of it which seems to be the more popular methodology. I had 54 pieces laser cut for me by German buddy Hagen, and then I hand rolled and tig welded everything together, each bend and section individually.

Yes. I used the 2 Stroke Pipe Wizard program (About $25 dollars) and cone layout. What took me FOREVER to understand was how to create each individual section in cone layout. Thanks for sharing. You used a lot more sections then me. For my next pipe i will also built at least 40 sections. I think i used a complete new method by designing that thing in CAD. It is basicaly the "saw a straight pipe" method but it was entirely done on the pc. It was also quite puzzeling till i found a solution to devide the angles between every segment. Now this is done within an houre when the "3D scan" of the route through the trike is finished.
Did you polish the welded lines on the insied? On the pic it looks like you just welded it together. When i did that i had a lot of weld spatters on the inside...

Mine were all fairly clean on the inside. I did have a few a little rough but overall I was happy with it. As you mentioned, for me also, the challenge was dividing the angles for each section and knowing with exactness what their dimensions were. On the smaller diameter areas I didn't do more than a 5 degree angle on each end. On the larger pieces I went up to 15 I think, in the middle.
I really like your cad method - it is a little beyond my realm of expertise but I can definitely appreciate the modeling process and work it took to put that together in that way. Here is one more picture of mine finished as well as a link to my build thread and then you can have your thread back from me :)

Great built from you, that trike looks awesome.
Dont worry about the threat, i realy like to corespond with someone who is gone that way too...
What steel and plate thicknes did you use?
Billy Golightly
09-12-2015, 04:15 PM
I had two sets of everything made. One in mild steel, 1mm thick that I built this pipe out of. And then another set out of stainless steel that had been annealed for easier forming/shaping.
I have not done anything with the stainless sets yet.

(thats the part of the tricke that i am not realy proud of...)
Here is my solution, it is a bent steelrod wich was welded to the cut lower pice of the milled kicker...

I'd pay $6000 but that's because I'm poor! LOL! If I had money I'd probably spend up to $8000 for that!!! I know it's worth more than that!

Time to put on the leather:
223744223745
It is partly riveted and the positions where it was not possible i glued it with kövulfix, a strange contact glue that is normaly used to glue shoes. You have to apply it, let it dry for 10 minutes and then you have to push everything together, the stronger you push the stronger it glues togehter.
Till now it works great.

Everything works now great, it hawls asses and has an unusal power at low rpm but also a strong powerband when you speed it up.
The only disadvantage is the unusual position of the right leg because of the large pipe, but this is a point that i can accept :naughty:
It now needs a bigger chainwheel to use the last two gears too...
Next i will write report of my Kawasaki Mocate built if you are interested ?!

Could you post some detail pics of how you mounted your nerf bars? I'm trying to fabricate some of my own and love your design! Did you build or buy those that you used?

That are Goldspeed Raptor nerfbars!
Bought them on ebay... They were a bit to long so i cutted out about 10cm and welded it back together... I think somwhere in my threat are pics of the cutting/welding.
224894224895224896224897224898
I turned a rod with a threat inside and welded it into my footpegs. The aluminum sheet which connects the footpegs with the bars is custom...
Because i had a lot of space in my lower frame, i integrated the holder for the nefbars into the frame...
I welded the holder together from stainles U-profile that was laying in my shop. I used 3 tubes, two to connect the frame to the holder. Into the ends of the pipes i welded a rod with a threat, and the third pipe is just a stainless tube that slides into the aluminum nerfbar after some minor turning work...
The holders on the frame are plasma cutted from 6mm steel sheet metal
If you need any more help just post it here or write me a pm...
