Decompression issue?

Alright, so this is an offshoot of my others thread title "185 wiring issues". I have spark now and I believe it to be in time now.

Here's the issue now with the 185, the more I pull the rope, the harder it gets to pull. There is no compression cable and manually moving the decompression lever does nothing to make it easier to turn the motor. Motor is in neutral. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, taking out the spark plug does not make it easier to turn the motor over.

Anybody know what size bolt is supposed to go in here?

If it's hard to turn over without the plug in, it's not a compression issue. I would remove the pull start assembly and check it out.

Ok. So I think I found the reason why it's hard to turn over. Whenever I bolt down the cam cover, it binds stuff up, but if I unbolt the two 8mm bolts, it turns just fine. Now I guess I need to find out why the cam cover is binding everything up

Whenever I bolt down the cam cover, it binds stuff up...Is this a basket case you assembled, or was it a runner at some point in its present incarnation? The reason I ask, is that the cam "bearing" surfaces in the head are machined with the head cover assembled to the head at the factory, thereby making the head and the cover a married pair. I have never seen a mismatched head and cover "work" together properly. If yours have divorced their original mates and are attempting a new relationship with each other, then that's probably the source of the binding.

This is a 185 motor in a 200 frame, so who knows what it's been through. I resolved the binding issue by milling off some aluminum and deburring the shaft hole. I got two good, non-binding pulls in before the rope snapped. So I threw in the towel for the day and am going to get after it again tomorrow.

and that open hole infront of the cam it is going to need the long bolt in there to make sure the head is one and tight even its like the fifth head bolt of sorts and is a 10mm bolt on top with a star for a screwdriver also and it about 8- 10 in long maybe
