First off I have the motor out and have the head off. Rings were a bear to get off. I'm pretty sure the piston is still good. Some small scuffs removed with sand paper and scotchbrite. I take some pics for you guys. I may have some questions as I move along. Any help is appreciated.

I would check with your local motorcycle dealer and see who they use for boring cylinders. If I took the time to tear it down I would definitely have it bored and get a new piston and rings. Also would rebuild the head. Not sure what problems your engine had to begin with, but if you have a worn bore I would be sure to flush the case with diesel.

Will do. Here is what started the problem. Threw the chain through the case cover. Cracked stator cover repaired with jb weld. It sat awile, and with my muffler bent up rain water filled up inside cylinder. I put tranny fluid in to dissipate any left over water.225743225742

Looks like a culmination of the words hammered, roach, and junk. I hope for your sake you didn't spend more than $150 on it. Good luck.

It's not as bad as it looks. I've had this bike since 2000. Most of the wear and tear from me and my buddies. We rode her hard and put her away wet. Still waiting for some parts and some extra cash to buy a new piston and rings. Oh well. You win some and you lose some.

Slow down mate; at least take the cylinder to a competent shop & have the bore measured properly. It looks like the cylinder needs to be bored. At the very least have the bore honed with something better than an egg beater hone. The bore may be OK but the piston might need to be replaced. Like a previous man said “Have it bored & a new piston”

Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about the bike, but yes probably a bore job and piston.

231052231053231054Finally found some time to start pulling my bottom end apart. Looks like I'm in to deep now. Funny I said that. I've been out of town for 8 months for work, only home on the weekend.

I will be needing some help on this one. I believe I have already downloaded the manual. I'll have to check. Looks like I need a special tool for the nut in the piece above the oil pump. Not sure what you call it.

Mackus84

Yes, you need the manual. It will tell you EXACTLY what you need to do it and exactly how to do it all. Piece by piece. I just did mine and it was my first time as well. And if it wasnt for the manual, theres no way in hell i wouldve been able to do it. You MUST use it if youve never done it before. And this is the "special tool"
You need it for your clutch and oil pump rotor

Cool deal. Thanks. Just got the flywheel off with 14mmx1.5 bolt. The spanner nut tool looks like a must at that price.231068231069231070

You can make one if you dont wanna wait for it to ship. Alot of guys here have. Just sacrifice a socket and use a grinder to cut it how you need

I got my crankshaft out. The 7/8" socket worked perfectly. Now for the bearings. I am gonna have to get some of those. Weisco 65.5mm 10.25:1 piston on order, bottom and top end gaskets too. I have been looking at some threads here on the forum about the Kickstart gears slipping. Some guys were back cutting the gears. I may go for this mod as it seams fairly simple, since it's apart. As for the bearings in the third pic the bearing on the right seams sticky. Is there anyplace that sells a full set of bearings, or should I just replace as needed?

I am wondering if anyone knows a good source for these bearings. Or can I just order from any bearing manufacturer.

Last 200x I built I had to look hard for some of the needle bearings. Most of the roller bearings are still easily obtainable. If you can't find the needles you may have to take the old ones to a bearing mfg.

I'm hoping its just the one bearing in one of my above pics. It's a little sticky.

If you are referring to just the bearings in the pic above then those should be readily available. Now that you have the cases torn down this far, I would replace as many as you can. Sticky or not, they are 30 years old and likely need some attention.

Thought I would check here first before I do it. In order to get the bearings out of my cases I was gonna throw them in the oven and let them drop out. Whatcha all think.

yaegerb
05-25-2016, 09:06 PM
Either that or heat with a MAPP or propane torch.

The oven will work really well. My experience is that in a 350 degree oven, after a few minutes you'll hear a thunk as the bearing just falls out under its own weight. Now, if your case isn't degreased and very clean, you'll catch heck from anyone else in the house... I have an old (free) craigslist oven in my garage for this and many other purposes.

It's what's for dinner LOL. Funny this buck came right up to us. I think someone has been feeding it. I also got a video of it going into my lean to. The sumbich was gonna hop on my trike. I'll post a video of it if I can. Anyways the two bearings that I suspected are bad, are the two that won't drop out. One dropped out after about 3 min. at 325*. Bumped it up to 350* and they still wouldn't come out. Done for the evening, and try again this weekend.

I got a few more parts today. Still need one more bearing though. My local bearing had all but the 32mm x 35mm . The one for the left crankcase mainshaft. It is one I have not got out yet, and is upside down in the case so I can't read the numbers on the race. Crankshaft ready, top end bored and ready . Wesco piston ready, but I'm gonna have to take a little break for this.233660 I drew a once in a lifetime Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep tag. Hells yah. Been doing a lot of hiking to get in shape. Will be hunting at 7-10000 feet. Climbed to the top of local ski area. Going to try for high as we can go on Mt Hood.233661

Update:
Back to the real world. I'm fricken exhausted. 4" of snow on our last night on our pack in weekend over labor day weekend. Ram killed September 13th. Hell of steep country. I still need a little break on the x though. I will post some more photos and videos of the hunt in the open forum. Sorry for getting off topic. " Once in a lifetime ". Kind of like some of the builds on this site. Thanks for your patience. 234860234861

No, a pedistal mount like the one above. I'll put some more pictures up in the open forum. But this ram was shot before, possibly by a poacher, or another tag holder from a previous season . His other horn was hit by a bullet, I was told by the local biologist. Thanks for looking.

Well I finally was able to get those stubborn bearings out. I used some of the methods above. It worked on the larger bearing, but the smaller ones just would not come out. I just went and purchased a harbor freight slide hammer bearing extractor. With a little effort the bearings came right out. I will post a complete list of all the bearing numbers if some one may need them for future reference. Sorry so slow on the build. Had my hunt come up, baby due any day now, and work out of town all week, and only home one the weekends. Anyways hope it goes back together a little faster. Thanks for looking.
