Hey, new member here... Recently picked up a 1982 Yamaha Tri-Moto YTM200k from a buddy that had it for sale. He purchased it from the original owner and it's in 9/10 condition, especially for the year.

I couldn't pass it up after seeing it, as a kid we had an 80's YTM 200 E so it definitely brought back some fond memories.

The trike runs and starts perfectly, but I thought I'd run it through a thorough service while there's snow on the ground. I found a couple service manuals online which were a huge help.

New plugs, fresh oil, pulled the carb and soaked it, cleaned jets, checked valve clearance, cam chain adjustment, etc... I couldn't believe everything was still in factory spec and pulled 145psi of compression. I did have to ditch the factory carb boot as it had dry rotted over the years and I was afraid of eventually causing an air leak/lean condition. I removed the factory rubber from the spigot and used a short section of 1.25" ID fuel rated hose that fit perfectly.

Only issue I really discovered was with the air filter. The foam "donut" on the air filter guide has completely deteriorated. From some online research it looks like that style filter had been used for many years after on many Yamaha ATV's like the Moto-4, Big Bear, Timberwolf, etc... Even the newer Warrior/Raptor 350's look to be the same style. The only difference is that they seem to be an inch or two longer.

I found a couple replacements online that look like they come with a new "donut" to seal the air box like the following:

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/370653997739-0-1/s-l1000.jpg

Then I discovered the "airbox filter adapter" for the Raptor 350's, that replace the weird factory lid secured air filter all together.

Those kits are kind of pricey, but I'm curious if anyone has used adapted one of the eBay cheaper versions for a Yamaha trike?

After installing the "clamp-on" style mount you can use whatever air filter you desire.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience or pictures of one mounted... Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

What I did with my quad is good the rubber boot between the carb and air box to an auto parts store and found a short exhaust pipe coupler that fit inside of it and ran that through the air box and then used a clamp on filter. I can't remember the size but I got one that stepped up in size because it fit tight going into the air box, then I sealed it on both sides with rtv sealer. It cost less than $10 all together

I did the same on my 83 YTM 200 and then got a clamp on k&n airfilter for it.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm just waiting for the seller of those plastic air filter adapters to get back to me. If the dimensions are good I'll order one and I'll probably use a UNI dual stage clamp on filter.
Never been a huge fan of K&N gauze style filters...

The online seller got back to me with the dimensions, everything should work.

I went with this adapter:

and a Uni 2 stage 4.5"x4" filter that should fit the airbox nicely:

I'll keep you guys posted once I get the parts and have it installed.

Not yet.. measurements say it'll work haha. Still waiting for the parts to show up. I'll report back with pictures as soon as I get it mounted though.

Well, all the parts are here and i temporarily fitted them to see how it's going to work.

Overall I'm pretty impressed, I think it will be a great upgrade over the stock set-up... I took a few pictures so here they are.

For the price, the plastic mounting flange looks good. It comes with 2 screws that thread into the flange and a foam ring to seal it to the airbox. The foam ring doesn't fit into a groove or anything so I'll probably just use some RTV sealant instead.

The uni-filter I used was model UP-4275AST, which is a dual layer 4.5" x 4" filter with an angled 2.75" opening. I went with the angle because it would give me more mounting options and not stuck against the side of the airbox.
The 2.75" opening fits the mouthpiece perfectly.

You can see the adapter is more than big enough to supply the air required for the 200 thumper.

Also fits into the factory filter "notch" nicely, the 2 holes that will need to be drilled are not obstructed by anything on the other side.

Mocked up you can see why I chose the angled filter, the filter itself is about the same size as the factory unit except has foam on the end instead of a plastic cap so It'll provide a little more air.

Note that with the factory airbox installed the grooves that hold the stock airfilter will hit the new filter, not sure if I'm going to trim them off or leave them be. It wont really obstruct the filters performance and I can still close the lid securely. If you slide it forward as you close the lid you'll actually just compress the filter a little which is fine. The filter as a spring to keep the filter rigid but allow for flex as well.

This dual layer filter has the option to run without the external foam, it'll clear everything then but I like the idea of the added filtration.

Hopefully that helps anyone else out looking to do something similar, I'll report back once I have it fully mounted and secured and fire up the bike.

Here it is mounted, I did end using black rtv to seal the flange to the airbox. I also ended up trimming the tabs off of the airbox lid. The chance of this thing ever running a stock filter is highly unlikely.
I did reinforce the areas I trimmed with epoxy though. I used longer mounting bolts that came with the kit and secured them with lock nuts. Bike seems to be running good, I will dial in the carb when it warms up outside.

Ugly... but no one will ever see it.

How much did that cost for each item? How long did it take to do? Link to the products u bought? Does it have more power?

$30.47 total, I ordered the same parts after I read this. I have a paper filter on mine due to the factory seal failing on my trike back around 1985. I'm looking forward to getting it installed. I can assure you it will not increase or decrease the power of your YTM. These are what I ordered, can't guarantee they will fit though as I haven't received them yet.

I installed mine today. Perfect! (almost) I didn't have to cut any of the factory box ribs. I did have to raise the hard plastic flange up about 6mm from the lowest point it will go into the box. If you don't the thick flange on the air filter takes up all the space and you can't get the clamp on properly. The other thing is that the flange bolts are useless. They're tapered, but there's no way to countersink the air box that deep. The bolts aren't Metric and one hole in the flange doesn't even have threads:wondering I drilled out the holes and used SS button head screws with nyloc nuts on the inside.

The foam seal is pretty cheesy too. An O-Ring would have been perfect.

I'll give it an 8 out of 10. It may not be perfect, but it solved a problem that's been bugging me for a long time.
