Hi everybody, been lurking for the last few weeks but joined up tonight! I'm in Georgia and looking forward to spring to get back to riding! When I was a teen I had a 200x. But always wanted a big red. Now I've got one I want to get her in top condition.

Just bought an 85 big red 250es Saturday and I need a few bits to get her back in running form. I got it to run on a whiff of spray tonight just to confirm the basic engine but I know I'm going to need a carb.

Where can I buy a carb that will bolt on and run?

Also what size battery do these take and how is the best way to get to it?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks

James

Might try contacting Flyingw on here and see if he has any extra. Have heard good things on his carb rebuilds for the big reds.

Ditto on contacting flyingw about your carb. He can rebuild yours and it will be flawless. Quick turnaround time too [emoji106].

Welcome to the board James. Post up a pic of your ride. Take some pics from different sides. I'm looking for potential issues so we'll go from there.

I'll post up some pictures soon. Right now I've got the tank and carb off and I'm mocking up a winch mount. Also planning on replacing the lights with led units. Also considering a bigger battery maybe mounting it in the back compartment. I need to look at mounting options in there.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody!

Before you install a bigger battery, consider the charge rate of the inverter/regulator. Its charge rate is not much more than a trickle which is about 1/4 Mah. When the recommended battery (BS12) is depleted down to 75%, it takes a couple of hours of runtime to get it back to 100%.

Yeah I'd stick to the standard battery. I purchased a brand new 90 or 91 trx300 carb on eBay. The only mod I had to use was a trx300 throttle cable. My bike runs like a champ with no jetting or internal mods. I have great low end torque and more top end. I want to say I paid about $80 for the carb and about $10 for a gently used cable. Super easy bolt on. Welcome to the club!

My reasoning on the larger battery is adding the winch to the trike. Would be nice to have extra capacity for bad days. The Alt puts out 200 or approximately 14amps. While that won't charge quickly is not bad.

Why do you need a winch? If you get stuck just pick it up

Flyingw
02-17-2016, 03:36 AM
It should also be noted that a 14 gage stranded wire is only rated for a max of 5 amps so at most the regulator will provide to recharge the battery is 5 amps but I think the output from the regulator is less than that.

djm0242
02-17-2016, 10:19 AM
So are you mounting the winch on the front rack? Those racks can be yanked off of there as well as bending the forks is also possible. I would just use caution in mounting one. I've never mounted a winch on a trike but I'd research that carefully- people charge like $130 for a new rack and if you tear one of those ears off the forks it would suck...

Georgiabii
02-17-2016, 11:52 AM
Actually I'm welding up an entirely new mount that will not use the rack at all. What I'm looking at doing is a bracket that will wrap around and clamp to the forks. I looked at the front rack and it's not stout enough.

As for picking it up. ... well maybe in my younger years but where I ride when your stuck it's usually pretty bad. :)

Flyingw looking at this chart for 12v systems considering the distances involved 14g write can handle a good bit more than 5a.

I'd love to see that bracket- so please share when you get it done! By the way looks like your tank might be worth doing the 40/60 mix paint thinner boiled linseed oil rub- (looks like a plastic tank)

Georgiabii
02-17-2016, 02:26 PM
It is plastic. What is this rub you speak of? And what does it accomplish?

Soon as I figure out how to post pictures and finish the mock up I'll get them up here.

Mixing boiled linseed oil and thinner or mineral spirits can remove the oxidation and help restore the color. There is at least one YouTube video that demonstrates. Sometimes it takes multiple applications- but better than painting since the paint won't really stick around for long.

Thanks for the idea I'm going to give that a try!

What do you guys suggest for a front tire? I was looking at ITP Mud lites for the rears. Would that also work on the front? Or is there something better that the 3wheeler hive mind knows?

Thanks

This is how it sits right now. Waiting on parts and carb work to be finished. Going to continue to tear it down this weekend and might end up rebuilding the wiring harness completely.

Sadly the tires are pretty dry rotted so they have to go. Shame since they have good tread on them.

djm0242

Well tires kinda depend on what your long term aspirations are. Are you going to keep this thing and really clean it up and ride it all the time? Or are you going to get it working and sell it? If you are going to customize it and keep it I'd invest in some aftermarket rims and 2" spacers. Your wheel pattern is 4/110. Most modern aluminum rims have a pretty deep back spacing so you'll need spacers to make other wheels fit. I use 14" ss212's with ITP 8ply tires. They are heavy 26" meats but, you could do a number of rims that would offer you a greater selection of tire sizes. You won't get anything larger than 27" tires to fit unless you lengthen your swingarm. I have also swapped to a 350x front end recently which will only carry an 8" tire safely without rubbing the fork boots. Anyway, I can go on and on about my own bike but with 2" spacers you can put quite a variety of wheel and tire combinations. Those old Carlises you have on there can easily be duplicated. I think you can buy them new still. It might also be possible to put some tubes in those old tires, however it can be a nightmare especially if those tires have plugs and punctures in them. You'll spend about $75 I'd say buying tubes. I bet those rims are glued to those old rims and it's pretty crusty and slimy in there. You risk busting those tubes and blowing your money right off the bat. Choose wisely!

The end goal is to have a machine for myself that is the baddest most capable trike you will ever find. I'm looking fit every item to work and be able to go anywhere and extract itself from anything.

Ahhhh And we have lube in the differential! Teeth are nice and undamaged. Just a bit of surface rust from years of sitting. That should polish right off.

Sadly I realize I need a muffler. grrr

02-19-2016, 09:36 PM
In the respect of tires, first the ones on that machine are terrible for mud, had the same ones on a quad, too much slip. I personally have a dedicated big red with 25 inch outlaws, however you can't get them that small any more. I think the smallest they make now is 26 inch. You should be able to fit 26-27in w\o a lift, but I don't have direct experience. Front tire is just for steering, find a good tire that has lugs going front to back which will help it turn in mud etc.

I'm assuming the wench is for mudding, I have a friend that made up a wench on his big red, no clue how it turned out though, I haven't been around him since he mentioned the project. I have never been stuck with the tires I have except at trike fest, that nasty type of clay just isn't around here like it is down south.

Here is are some photos of the rear tires I was talking about. Last one was TF2015, other two are TF2014. The TF2014 machine is the one my friend bought and the tires got migrated to the other machine :).

Good news on the diff. Pull the hubs and grease your axle bearings and make sure they are in good working order. The hubs need to be really tight when you put them back on. Oh yeah if the muffler has some small holes just plug them with JB Weld. You can buy a brand aftermarket new replacement slip-on for like $170.00 so good luck. Maybe you can weld and patch?

Georgiabii

Sadly this is why it's so important to keep good fork boots on our machines...

Not sure if it's worth rebuilding these or just run them as is and deal with the bounce. Right now I'm leaning toward running them as is.

Thoughts?

This is where I am at today. Tear down is coming to a close. Tomorrow I'll service the rear axle and then later on in the week I'll do the brakes, front end back together and fix some small wiring issues. I am planning on riding this inside of 2 weeks if I can pull the trigger on some tires this week.

228115I actually have a spare pair of these fork tubes - they aren't new, but they don't look all chewed up either! It's fun figuring out how to take the forks apart but once you do it one time it's not a big deal. You'll need a set of 32mm fork seals. I use Lucas oil treatment as my fork oil. You can get a set of fork boots between $16-25 bucks - I've ordered them on eBay a couple times also from Summit. Whilst all this is apart you may as well change out the front tire and replace or at least grease the front axle bearing tube. Check the condition of the Allen bolts on the very bottom of your fork legs. Clean them get them free of mud around the outside of the bolts. Spray with PB blaster heat them if necessary but see if you can get them loose.

Tomorrow I'll finish cleaning the fuel tank and install the new petcock, fuel filter, and battery. Might even fire it off for the first time. Still waiting on fork seals so I'll do the swing arm and axle Sunday.

Big shout out to flyingw for the carb work and djm0242 for a set of fork tubes to replace my junked ones.

I bought it on ebay for 139 Here is a link to the auction. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kimpex-Exhaust-078503-ATV-Muffler-Silencer-Honda-ATC-250ES-Ref-18310-HA0-682-/201530509926?vxp=mtr It went on fairly easy. I did heat up the slip on coupling to get it on it was a bit tight.... Fairly quiet and nicely made. Not high end car quality but nice.

Yep the carb was redone by our member here. Can't say enough good things about his work. Got it to him on a friday and he had it back in the mail to me on monday. Build and tested on his test engine.

Interesting placement on the wench, only down side I see is it will require hooking onto the trees fairly high up. However, it is a 3 wheeler, so it shouldn't really take too much to pull it out anyway.

Looking pretty good, reminds me a little of my goto machine except it's fenders are busted up. If you do go the route of replacing the fenders, I might be interested in the faded ones just for their added protection vs the fill your boot with mud - broken fenders I have currently lol.
