Or will standard car 10w40 work in a Big red?

Cool. I was worried these were like motorcycles and having issues with regular oil and wet clutches.

Thanks Flyingw!

There are some different schools of thought on that but allot of guys run regular SAE 10W-40 with no issues. Some guys swear by Rotella and to each their own. Whatever people run, one thing is for sure. Do not run Synthetic oils in these old motors. The wet clutch dos not like Synthetic oils. Stick to conventional oils and you'll be ok.

I think the jury's still out honestly,,,I also run whatever new car oil might be around in my Big Reds,I only have somewhere around 55,000- 70,000 miles seat time on them. None of them smoke ,rattle or have one way issues,so I have never had one of ours apart yet. So I can't swear to the wear that may or may not be in there...I say car oil is fine yes.

I always run 10w-40 in my 86 125m, 200x, and 200m. It usually is the Valvoline ATV oil, but when they are out I run CASTROL oil. My dad always runs regular 10w-30 name brand oil in his 83 atc 200 and its engine just got its first rebuild last year. So really its all up in the air but the main thing is to check and change the oil periodically.

Rotella 15w40 goes in everything I own. Truck, trike, bike, or mower...

Gee Bill, with less than 100,000 miles on those air cooled single bangers don't you think it's a little premature to say the conventional oil isn't doing irreparable harm to your engines? Wow! Just goes to show the best oil is CLEAN oil.

I can't speak for all synthetic oils, but Mobil1 never hurt any clutch I've owned.

I think "Motorcycle" and "ATV" specific oils are a scam. How about that Harley Oil? Made with pride by Shitgo of Venezuela, buy American and support a dicktator. :beer

+ 2 on the 15w40.....I work with a fleet of trucks and let me tell you that the Mystic product is great....never once have I done a main seal or bearing while running this oil....It is compatible with wet clutch systems and I use it in everything from my car, mower, 3 wheeler, bike, etc.....They also make synthetics......
