There is a chart to I.D. Year and model of each engine I will try to find it and post it

And then, we have this little gem in the rough thanks to forum member Jesse (hrc200x on the forum). For 10 points, can anyone establish whats wrong with this picture? Anybody? Bueller? Nope? So here is the scoop. Like the product codes I mentioned above, all the 3rd generation 250Rs start with TB06E as part of the serial number for the engine. You can clearly see the letters casted into the case above the stamped/riveted portion. The only thing "wrong" with this picture is the fact that the 85-86 ATC250R's did not start with 800~ on the stamped plate. They started with 240~ (1985) and 250~ (1986). Your saying "Well, that's just a TRX250R case then". Not so fast, because the TRX250R's have a different casting in their cases. They have TE12E ('86-'87), and TE06E ('88-'89). Here's the best part though, according to the Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide, that I referenced above, the serial # for 1987 year model TRX250R would be TE12E-800~. Did you catch that? That number on the case pictured above has the first half of an ATC vin (TB06E) and the last half of an '87 model TRX vin (800~). Obviously, we do not have a printed guide to reference 1987 year model ATC250R numbers with, but that is an extremely logical way for one to be formatted. You can full size the picture and check it out for yourself, but Jesse tells me the VIN reads: TBO6E-8006250

It's a 250r 2 stroke motor. And my vin is not in that chart.

It's the stock motor? Or did someone put it in there?

Is this the 87 atc trike motor?

Prob a TRX250r bottom end on a atc250r top end, common practice back in the times prob.

It's an atc bottom end bc the code is TB06E. And an atc top because it's stamped 87 ha2. That's what I came up with after a bunch of research.

I agree. You have a 1987 atc250r motor. Ha2 top end on a TB06E ~ 800XXXX bottom. Now the question is did honda put that motor there or did someone else?

The motor has been stored in my friends building for 8 years. I bought it from him and put on my trx250r. Past that I'm still trying to get iformation on it.

Ok. Well I have heard that the 87 atcR motors where offered as crate motors from honda. Thats why they exist.

Is there anyone that can confirm that. I would love to get documentation on my engine.

I tried to. I'm hoping that the administration on this forum can help me. I know they did a couple of threads on the 87 250r mystery trike.

This is all strange. Some sites say 1987 TRX250R's case number is TB06E-800XXXX and same say TE12E-800XXXX. But we all know the TB06E was the 85/86 atc250r's case number and 86 trx's are TE12E.

Here the numbers are. Can a professional tell me if this is an 87 atc250r engine? You see on the head says ha2 and the jug is stamped 87 ha2 and my case number is TB06E 8002703.

Jamie119

Nothing wrong with the motor. I pulled the jug off to change rings and ran across all the mixed up numbers that lead me to nowhere.

I think the info printed on this forum is incorrect. Otherwise I have an 87 ATC motor also.

The more I read the more incorrect it does sound. Probably just a trx

Is it possible that Honda took some engines that were built for the atcs and put them on some trxs for some reason? Maybe to save money or something like that? If they were involved in lawsuits, I could see them doing something like that.

my 87 trx 125 is clearly an ATC 125 underneath that has been factory converted. The spot for a steering neck and the ATC frame design is there, with the front end basically grafted on like some solid front end ATC conversion kits were. I would assume that a batch of the very popular mid sized ATC125 were in the factory already before the ban, and honda isnt stupid enough to waste all those wheelers...

I too have aquired one of these engines .
Lucky me I ran across a thread on the net from 3WW and instantly started researching all the folklore.
They do exist ! 253712
This is a new/never ran engine . I also have an 87 350x engine in same condition. They have been tucked away in my father-in-laws shop for years. Just thought I would share the news . I’ll post better pics in the future.
