View Full Version : Tire weight really an issue?

How sensitive are 250es concerning tire weight? Need a set to replace the oem ohtsu's. Hate the look of all available knobbys. Hate that Mudlites and such are 20%+ heavier. Will i notice the weight difference of 21lb tires over 17lbs? And will that much difference cause undue strain or wear on my baby? Ugly knobbys are better than wearing something out on it. Thanks in advance for any input!

I don't have any specific info on wear on the machine but I do know people put much larger heavier tires on there's and it hasn't messed there's up. Mud lites will be perfectly fine it when people are other running 28 inch 40 pound mud tires

I think if you're going with the stock size, 25x12x9, then you should be fine IMO. I can tell a difference with my 30 pound vampires but they make it more stable. I have a harder time pulling wheelies in second gear, and it runs out of power in second when I'm in thicker mud. But that's partly because they have over an inch of tread.

It depends on what you do with it. Lighter tires will let you get your wheel speed up sooner and keep it cause a lot of hp isn't lost just trying to turn the tires over

The biggest issue with all the mud tires is that they are made for a 800lb 500cc+ beast they sell today. Even the 250 big red doesn't have much suspension and you will notice when you switch. But man do they look good and function good.
I went with 25x12 dirt Devils they trying to stay close to stock, but they really measure almost 27".

I had seen them but had overlooked that they were available in 25x12-9 and moved on. I think I like them better than all other knobby type I've found though. I lean towards Mudlites but this thing is not going to be a mudsubmarine anyway. I'm past trying to find the limits of everything. Main interest is ride quality and reasonable durability. It's too nice for somebody that's cheap like me to be treating it too rough anyway. Thanks for the link!!!!

That is for sure. The big red does not have the suspension that my rancher does, and I noticed a big difference on it when I went from oem tires to Mudlites. Ended up buying a set of new oem takeoff wheels/tires from a 2015 foreman to replace the Mudlites. I know they won't go as deep in the mud, but I'm old now and really hate having to clean one up after that kind of riding anyway. I guess it's old sissys like me that make those bypass trails that go around the mud holes that monster trucks and jacked up big bore atv's have been digging in. I'll get in the mud. But I don't go riding to find out how deep of a mud hole I can go through

I own two identical bayous and run them thru the same trails, you notice the difference with heavier tires My 220 Bayou handles much differently with 6 ply tires. I weighed both stock and my replacement tire on steel rims and there was almost 7 pounds difference. Bayou lugs around unless you rev it up, but since we use it for plowing, pulling a yard cart it is a good trade off for the traction over knobbies. I do notice it gets a little hotter too when pulling a landscape rake or lawn sweeper

Maybe find aluminum rims for your big red to offset the tire weight, I picked up some new ITP rims on discount and intend to put 4 ply knobbie instead of 6 ply mud tires

I am running 27 inch mudlites with no problem. They sold a kit that allowed you to add an extra wheel on each side for mud and snow. The machine turned all 4 wheels fine. Will it wear things out faster? More than likely. Does it have a problem turning them? No....

230986 Love it, goes anywhere. I know many people run even bigger than these.

I have had 25" ITP Mudlites on my '85 Big Red for the better part of a decade. I haven't worn anything out. They work great and I highly recommend them.
