Hi, im a newbie from Australia, i have a 200x 1984 model, the barrel as i found out when i went to get it rebored, was at maximum diameter.
I tracked down a replacement barrel on ebay [ http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cylinder-Kit-180cm3-63mm-Bone-for-Honda-1980-82-86-93-XR200-XR200R/191720222680?_trksid=p999999.c100623.m-1&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%2 6asc%3D20160323102634%26meid%3D264e06ed8e894f7099a 679cff8660ce0%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26 sd%3D191596279700 ], I chose this model because i measured my current barrel at 75mm.
I have since found another option from the same company [ http://www.ebay.com/itm/191596279700] and it list the valid hieght of 81.50mm(3.20").
Wondering if anyone might be able to advise me which barrel would be better suited for my motor?

As far as I know, the xr 200 cylinders will fit on all of the 185/200 atcs. It should work. You may try to pm John Tice. He's a machinist and may be able to answer your questions.

Any shop worth a darn can press in a sleeve & bring it back to standard. I’ll tell them how if they can’t do it. This is too simple to over look.

Incorrect, if you want to use a stock size piston.

If your jug measures 75mm with the sleeve installed, then you certainly dont have a stock engine. 75mm is the stock bore size for an XR250, pre 1986.

Also, neither of the links posted will work. They are for crf150 and crf230 engines. The seller is clueless. He lists the jug as fitting an xr200 and an xr200r, which have completely different engines. His jug will fit neither, lol.

John posted the answer to your issue.

Read “How it’s done” last entry; there should be enough info to sleeve your cylinder

LA Sleeve should be able to mail you a 1/16" wall straight sleeve which will press rite in cold. Use a -.001"
press fit.
Keep us posted

Thanks for the answers. The sleeve insert, although definately the better option, was a quite expensive option locally, but if the barrel mentioned dont work, it may be the only way to go. PS:- the barrel height is 72.5mm, NOT the bore size, the honda shop measured the bore which was approx 67mm [which they claimed as last oversize].

The original barrel height was 72.5mm, a typo in the previous post.

Anyway, i have the "chinese" barrel [EBAY-as above----....I know! ] now, and it fits the 200X beautifully, except for one thing. The barrel hieght is too great [76.6(3.02")] and thus preventing the timing chain sprocket from mounting onto the cam [about 2mm short, at max stretch]. BUMMER! Thought i might get away with it, ....nope, ....so close ! My son anxiously sitting behind me saying "Just buy it, c'mon, just do it!" didnt help!LOL
I have no doubts that it will work fine on the other honda motors of the era XR XL and some of the early 80's ATC's even [as claimed, ....der!], I thought about getting the head shaved to accomodate, which would possibly solve the issue, but but its the hinese piston also, so valve interference might occur, so at best, it will always be a "cross my fingers, hope for the best" motor, not worth the risk IMO.

Lesson learned, going reco originalė. Feel free to reinterate that i should have done it properly in the 1st place! LOL

You could get the Chinese barrel machined lower, but the material has to come off the bottom surface.
The top has a depression for the cam chain guide, that would disappear if you cut the top edge. That jug is probably the OEM height for the late model crf230 engines. All 185/200 jugs are the same height as the stock 200x jug.

I think your best option is to cut as "YTZ drew" mentions including the sleeve bottom length. It's been many years since I built an 185/200 style motor and as a regular lurker to this forum the question that has not been answered is whats the piston deck height? As stated the new cylinder is @ 4 mm taller and you assembled the motor when you determined the cam chain is to short, how far is the piston down in the bore? This effects compression along with head/valve clearance. Whats the piston pin height? This could help others who thinking of this option and search for answers.

Yes, good point about removal from the bottom edge, but would be a difficult machining operation because of the bore sleeve, ie- cutting around the sleeve without touching it [big $$$ ?]. Thanks, i didnt think of the cam chain recess. The piston top height is unknown to me, and i lack the required measuring equipment. There is approx 4-5mm from the Head top surface to the top of the piston @TDC, so it might not foul the valves. The gudgeon pin center height would be the normal Honda specification [i cant locate info on it, sorry], the rod is a standard rod. As i said, too many maybe's, .....lesson learned and im now in the process of getting a resleeved original barrel, this post was more informational, to see if anyone else had encountered a similar issue and if machining the china Special might be possible, and as a warning for anyone else silly enough, as i was, to believe the chinese barrel would fit.

That jug is probably the OEM height for the late model crf230 engines. All 185/200 jugs are the same height as the stock 200x jug. Thats intreguing, because the retailer claimed in the advert, that, and I quote directly from the listing page "It will fit Honda ATC 185 and XL185 / XL200 XR200;", .....hmmm, maybe i can get a refund!
