$100 LoL

I would just put an aftermarket brand new beautiful fender on the thing and ride it.

I've got one of these, but not sure how to install it on my 86 200X. It's got the new Maier fenders, so there's no molds for it to fit into like the OEM ones have. Has anybody put one on and have advice or pictures? Thanks,

Pretty sure Maier doesn't use this piece...they aren't too easy too find either.

The way i'm doing it is carefully!! bend the support to form the fender, cut a groove for a good fit. Im putting rubber grommets(left over front fender grommets) with a collar. I just havent drilled holes yet.239291

Maier sent me angle brackets but i chose not to go that route. I have maier fenders on another bike with no support yet and there fine 2-years later no sag without it so its your call. (Thats just a heat barrier u see in pics)
The notch i made has no effect on strength of fender.

Awesome thanks Shep, my kit is just like that. I've had it for a year and haven't done anything with them. I do need to put a heat shield on, I noticed the inside fender was getting a little black. Keep me posted on your progress.

My aftermarket tailpipe was too close so for cheap insurance i picked up some aluminum/fiber stick on heat shield.
After a day of riding there was no heat transfer to the fender at all.

I used something like this- http://ebay.to/2kuzE8W

I ordered that aluminum heat shield tape. Thanks Shep. Another question for anyone. I recently re-painted my tank with a urethane paint (Ford bright white) and the gas fill is chipping. This is the second time I have painted the silly thing. I am considering having it professionally painted, but most places want $300 or more. Any suggestions? I've had the frame and swing arm power coated, so I might just have to bite the bullet.239303

Oh and here's a pick of my 86 200x from a few months ago. Right now, its in pieces. Had to pull the motor for a leaking gasket and haven't put it all back together. Also bought new OEM fork boot covers that are a darker blue I need to install.

Also pick of my R, but it is in storage at my parents house.

The 86 200x pic doesnt work?
To powder coat the tank would be great. I cant see the inside but if its coated or bondo anywhere i think your past that option.
The filler hole, it comes up to a lip. That lip has to be bare metal. (Looks like yours is) Moving away from that lip the very first paint that the metal encounters has to be the end of the film of clear coat. If any base or primer is exposed the gas will get between the coats of paint and lift them right off the tank. It does not help that the 200x gas cap was designed in a way that fuel/vaper can get trapped under that rubber collar.
Theres not much that can be done after it peels, u could cut back enough with a razor blade clean off any residue (3-times) repaint area, wetsand then clear the whole tank again.
I'm NO expert but this is what ive learned from trial+error....
Make sure theres no wax or oils on the tank if u clear again, use like a dish soap a couple washes.
What type of paint did u use? Spray (rattle) can or paint gun?

There is a rattle can clear i've posted about before its not 100% fuel proof but i have to recomend it for do it yourself paint jobs. I think its in the trykesyvsnia forum about someone using bondo on there gas tank.
I hope this helps. http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/182265-Trying-my-hand-with-bondo-on-200x-has-tank

Thanks Shep, the tank does have some bondo on it. When I purchased the ATC, the tank had a dent in it. My Dad and I were able to pull it out for the most part, but used bondo to smooth it out. See if this pic works. My brother and I are going to put the repainted motor back in this afternoon, so I'll post some progress pics as well.

Oh, the first time I painted the tank with a rattle can, that didn't hold up well, so I sanded it back down and primed and painted it with automotive urethane paint using my Dad's compressor and paint gun.
