What is the best brand oil to use in your ride? I personally think royal purple is the best but does anyone have any other opinions or reasons they run other brands. Obviously synthetic is better.

Cleanest freshest cheapest easiest to get ATV or MC oil in my 4 strokes. I use the same stuff in my 2-stroke transmissions, too.

Usually that means Valvoline ATV oil from the closest ADvance Auto Parts.

Although, I believe the 350X has some fancy synthetic Maxima oil in it now - it was on sale.

I run full synthetic Lucas Oil (10W-40) in my '82 200E. Haven't been using it long enough to comment from personal experience, it ain't cheap but my father swears by it and has been using it in his bikes his entire life.

like plain oil motor oil? it needs to atleast be some kind of oil designed for wet clutches like a motorcycle or atv oil. regular car oil probably isnt the best thing for it.

The guy that had my 85 200x before me put a synthetic in it and now the clutch slips BAAAD! Don't use synthetics! Spend the extra $3 and buy good oil if nothing else just for the peace of mind.

Used them all and after tear downs the below are best.

4 Stroke
GN4 - 10W40
Maxima Premium 4

2 Stroke
Klotz Super Techniplate (premix)
Maxima 927 Castor (premix)
Pro Honda HP Transmission Oil 80w/85w (this is the only 2 stroke tranny oil I use)

heres the excerpt from the manual. se and sf class is the plain old engine oil standard from the 70's and 80's. they even list weights all the way up to 20W-50, though thats probably a little thick unless its really hot where you live.

Edit: i also will add that the owners manual itself just calls for "a good grade of motor oil" and has the same as below listed.

I've been using GN4 for many years, and my small machine seems to like it.

Max-Cycle synthetic engine oil is available in 10W-30, 10W-40, and 20W-50, and is specifically formulated to exceed the demands of highly stressed motorcycle engines and transmissions. It is recommended for use in both air-cooled and liquid-cooled 4-cycle engines and is compatible with wet-clutch transmissions.

Formulated with select synthetic base oils and Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec® additive technology, Max-Cycle provides improved film strength when compared to the leading synthetic and mineral oils. Max-Cycle’s shear stability and oxidation resistance keep engines operating at a lower temperature, freeing up horsepower.

Max-Cycle meets or exceeds API requirements and is rated JASO MA2, the highest wet clutch compatibility rating under the JASO T903:2011 Clutch Friction Test. Max-Cycle is compatible with other mineral and synthetic engine oils. No flushing is necessary prior to use.

Max-Cycle’s high film strength dramatically reduces wear.

I got a bit sloppy and used 10w 40w Chevron oil from Costco in my 85R. As the owners manual states use the SE/SF grade oil.

I found out that regular automotive oil these days kills the clutch. You could just look in the oil and see it was caked with metal debris.

I switched to Pro Honda HP Transmission Oil 80w/85w and have relatively clean oil these days.

It is hard to say what additives oil companies put in there oil. It is clear to me that some of these additives are harder on clutches than others.

Spend the money on good oil or clutch plates.

Either way your money will get taken.

thats the oil i use, never had a problem with it. They also make one that labeled for 'ATV' instead of 'motorcycle' but i doubt there's a difference, they are both just made for engines that use wet clutches

Yup i've used the atv branded bottle before, but i found that the motorcycle (branded) has
More (zinc) in it. The cam/rockers like zinc.
Ok im done with the oil subject. Have a good day, (we just got our first 2-inches of snow in mass.)fun

I run Rotella in all my machines, my 200x likes it's, doesn't get so hot, and keeps everything wet

Rotella T 15-40 in everything from my lawn mower to my vehicle no matter age, fuel type or mileage. Shot of Lucas stabilizer for good measure. 25 years of testing and I'm happy with it

Honda GN4 or yama lube. You will want to avoid oil not designed for atc or atv. I think yama lube has additives specific for our atc enegines.
