i just bought a 83 atc185s. Its been siting for 2 years. started it up and it smokes a ton. should i order rings? should I run it as is and see if it goes away?:rolleyes:

My '82 smokes pretty bad for a couple of minutes after a cold start with the choke pulled but once the choke is in and it's warmed up it won't smoke for the rest of the day. Is it still smoking with the choke in and the engine warm?

If it's smoking that bad I'm not sure if just a set of rings will do the job. More likely than not a whole top end rebuild should be done. Plus, if you have it apart for rings you are already half way there, so might as well finish it with a fresh bore, piston and rings. Might need a valve job too.

Did you try flushing out the tank and putting fresh gas in? Could also be the reason why it's smoking so bad.

Ghostv2. ive put fresh gas in it. cleaned the carb, and changed oil. i wonder if its from sitting for so long

ive havent ran the engine long enough to be warm. could be the case

Try letting the engine warm up good first. Let it idle for a couple minutes and take it for a couple laps around the yard and see if it still smokes. Just be careful when it's idling to not let the plug foul up.

Your valve seals could be shot from sitting. If that's the source, then it should clear up after you run the engine for a bit. Because it lets oil drip down into the cylinder, so once you run the engine all that will burn off and the smoke will clear up. If it's your rings, the smoke will continue.

Are you getting any blow-by? Excess pressure or oil coming out of the breather hoses?

Get a meter and test all the electrical components that could be causing it. But even if it's a stator, it's not too hard. Even for someone without too much experience.

Take the recoil off, the cage, get a flywheel puller and pull the flywheel off, and bam, there it is. $20 fix.

If you have another trike you can swap electronic components with to test if that's the problem that always helps. Don't make the mistake and just blindly buy expensive electronics. It could be something simple like a bad connection in the kill switch. Something unplugged. Try pulling the boot off the ignition coil that goes on the spark plug and trim back the rubber to expose fresh copper and screw it back on. Like I said, could be anything...

i dont think power is getting to the coil. i took off the spark plug cap and put my finger on the exposed wire. pulled the rope and no shock. i think the coild is trash. there are two notches on the cdi. i thinks there supposed to line up. but they arent. how do i adjust it? (sorry if i dont make sense)

ive check all the coil point and nothing with the eletrical metter

Do you mean the pulse generator? Under the CDI cover?
Download a free manual and start from there. It'll have all the specs for the electronics, timing, etc.

yeah under the cdi cover. theres 2 knockes there and they dont line up. thanks for the manual!

Get your timing set and report back. Make sure your timing chain doesn't have too much slop in it.

update. did my ignition timing and she started up no problem. smoke when cold but pretty much goes away when warm.

valve seals need to be replaced. Easy way to tell if its valve seals is to take an initial compression reading and then pour a spoonful of oil in the spark plug hole and check compression again. If the compression rises your rings are ghandi, if it stays the same then its your valve seals.

compression is around 120

ok, is that before or after the spoonful of oil in the cylinder?

Have the cylinder measured & inspected by a competent machinist
