Hey guys I have a honda 1983 atc 200. Since I have got it I put a new carb on it, new throttle cable and new light bulbs and I finally had it all running great again, then I was riding it around the neighborhood to get the fluids running through it and it was running great and then all the sudden it dies. No sputtering or anything, just dead. I have been inspecting stuff to see if I can find a problem and I noticed this when I took stator? Cover off, there is a spring on one side and a broken on on the other side. So what is this part called? Also where can I get one and last, is this the culprit to my problem. I also checked spark and i did get spark when I pulled the plug and cranked it. Sucker got me by surprise lol.
I don't know much about these pull start stator systems. Any help would be helpful. I'll try to post pictures.

I think that's your timing advance system? Don't quote me on that. Either way, if it zapped you then you know ignition is most likely not the problem. There are only two other places to look- compression and fuel. Compression is unlikely the problem in your case so I'd be looking at fuel. Common fuel issues on bikes with metal tanks are the petcock screen clogging with rust or the gas cap losing its ability to vent thereby causing a vacuum in the tank which will not allow fuel to come out. To diagnose that problem, remove the gas cap and try to start the bike. If it starts then the gas cap could be the culprit. It's best to check that immediately after the bike dies because if you let it sit long enough it can eventually fill the carburetor again.

Long shot but happened to me. My main jet fell out while riding. Just died.

Note: This was just as I got my trike and just doing a quick run to test things out. :)

Prob won't function correctly with a broken spring. Also make sure the gas is on...not that I've done that myself

That must be more common than I thought cause we bought a 86 200x with the same issue

if not fixed yet check wiring going into plug for the icm if a wire is loose in the plug itself it will not have spark happened twice to me already, remedy is to get another plug and wire it in or get a very small flat blade screw driver and push every wire in that is going into plug.

Ok, don't know if you got this fixed yet. As someone else said that is your spark timing/advance. Broken spring is no good. I also hope you marked the position of the rotor onto that cdi plate, because if you didn't, it is way out of time and wont run. It may spark like that but I wont run. Also, be careful if you take to rotor out, it is possible to reinstall in 180 Degrees backwards. I had this problems once, it was sparking when the piston was on the exhaust or intake stroke. I would get a new spring (local honda shop if there is one near you, or ebay), and make sure you have the timing set right and that the rotor is in properly. Then it should run.

Turns out last time I took the pick up coil out I didn't screw it back in. So it kept falling out of the seat it sits in in the cover. I put it back together and it fired right up like it use too. So I guess the spring isn't doing that much for it.... but it does die on me and won't idle with out giving it some gas untill it warms up. After it's warm it will idle all day long no problem.

I have a 1985 honda 200x that had the same broken spring issue. I posted the same question on this form and someone gave me.

1990s xr200 springs are sold separately

So i bought a pair on partzilla or bike bandit and the spring looks the same and works great.

yea that was probably me here is the link to the spings http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1994/XR200R%20A/IGNITION%20PULSE%20GENERATOR/parts.html its best to go ahead and buy two because once one breaks the other one isn't far behind it.

thanks guys, I just bought two, I had it going for a little while even with one broken spring and then dies on me again while riding, this time I can spray starter fluid in the carb and it tries to fire, so Im guessing its just in the jet of the carb. So I just order a small inline fuel filter also and will be changing the oil when I replace the springs and pull the carb again.

Did you notice any symptoms when it was broke vs any improvements when you fixed it?

How long after you start it does it die?

Refer to post #1. Let's go from there. :)
