1985 200x transmission HELP!!!

In have assembled the transmission gears about 5 times already. Then i place them into the case and install the arms that move the gears and the shift drum. When i spin the shaft the gears spin smoothly and then lock up meaning i can turn the gear half a turn in either direction and then the gears lock up again. After i move the shift drum a little bit the gears then free up. I am wondering if this how the transmission is supposed to be or should the two shafts spin freely the whole time i shift the shifter drum?

Very normal . The gears won't find their correct position until the shifter star and drum stopper are in place .

Also there is nothing holding the shafts in place so they will twist and bind up when you turn them
