I know most here are into all sorts of things. It's always nice to see what we are all up to.

So post up what you have going on today. Whether it's cars, boats, bikes, planes, home......what you recently purchased or what your working on. I'll start.

Weathers been nice here recently so I'm going to get the wife's waverunner serviced and ready to go. Later I'm going to look at a Nissan Titan that a customer might sell to me for $5000.

Seeing what the house market is like.

House market is very strong right now. I mean crazzzy. Houses are selling very high. Over asking prices. Toying with the idea of maybe putting mine on the market.
Fact is I own (not payed for) but own and my GF of 2+ years does too. Sell mine. move in with her(?) Rent mine... Move in with her(?)

Lots to think about. Pros and cons of it all...

Don't sweat it Trip. Even $150000 4X4 John Deeres are stuck after they bottom out. I could elaborate, but I won't. Beautiful place you have there. You are a lucky man. I snowmobiled, sold some parts and built snowmen with the kids today. More of the same tomorrow God willing...83, there are several ways to get that carb much cleaner before you start polishing. Napa Carb soak, some boil them in vinegar and salt on the stove. Looking good though!

Went to breakfast with some friends, cut down 3 medium sized oak trees and blocked it up for the wifey to run thru the splitter. While she was splittin' wood I changed out the front hub on my 03 Impala. Thinking about heading out to launch some lead in a few minutes.........

I had the blade all the way up, but I only had one chain mounted, and the straps holding the chain broke. We got over a foot of heavy wet snow, and the next day we had 40 mph+ winds. The pic shows right after I got stuck, before the snow blew in and made a Big Red popsicle out of my Farmall. When the wind died down, the sun was so intense that it gave me a headache, even with polarized dark sunglasses on. I dug the tractor out last night (after the snow had melted and refrozen). It took about five hours, but at least it isn't frozen to the ground. I am hoping it will make a big difference with the chains on it, because it wont push anything the way it is. The hounds usually love the snow, but they didn't fancy the high winds...

Thought I'd complete one of my long term refresh projects and install a re-chromed valve cover on the '72 CB750. When the bike cover was removed this was the surprise. The gas tank is a fiberglass unit made by Tracey in the early 70's to replace the large metal tank. About 15 years ago the tank began leaking from the gas additive MTBE which dissolved and softened the resins. Sealed the inside with Caswell sealer everything OK until now. The state stopped using MTBE years ago but one can only imagine what additives are used now causing the paint to bubble and blister like this. Search now on to find a similar sized replacement metal tank.

Love the old sohc.

I've sealed fiberglass tanks that leaked in the past........the leaks were all stopped but the solvents have long found its way into the glass itself. I've painted old bultaco tanks that did similar.

I solve the contamination problem by getting it bare then applying a coat of resin prior to a finish. If memory serves I think I used epoxy resin for one project.

Oh yea.......I do the same......I hoard all the carb cleaner

I've been doing it since I was a kid and I hope my son carries on the tradition. Nothing fancy here. Just an old oil drum evaporator and some milk jugs hanging off trees. Oh yeah and a ton of labor. I ask my self every year "why do I do this?"
Then the smell hits me. Have you ever smelled a gallon of fresh maple syrup boiling??? It really "sticks" with you.

He said they slap things together and use a gallon of armoral.......those were the kinder words. They have 100% positive feedback so they seem fine. I don't know....... It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. It's an all day affair. 8 hours Saturday and 2 hours Sunday. We still need to finish boil in the house and jar it. There's lots of variables including the types of maple trees, day/night temps and which part of the season the sap was collected.

That sounds like a sticky situation from start to finish! Surely that takes a lot of patience and attention to keep from burning it.

Pouring 140 yards of concrete :naughty:

241110

ETA: Adding a little info here cuz typing on my phone at work sux ;)

The big box on the left is the base pad for the crane, you can see the first section of the mast is installed on the base plates, the red plates at the bottom. Once the job is done the crane will be dismantled and the base plates removed from the concrete. The 4 places with the epoxy coated rebar (green bars) are for columns, there will be a wall in between the 2 columns at the front of the pic and that wall will run all the to the opposite perpendicular wall to the left that is not in the pic. It's an exterior wall.

The base pad for the crane took 85 +/- cubic yards of concrete. I think the dimensions were 24 ft x 24 ft and it's almost 4 feet thick.

The box towards the rear of the pic is the base for the elevator, that's almost 4 ft thick too. There is a small wall we poured to the left of the pic that you can't see. Everything was poured with a pump truck. It took a little over 3 hours to pour everything. You have to pour in lifts, and let the concrete set slightly before you pour the next lift, otherwise the pressure from the weight of the concrete can blow out the forms, which obviously is not a good thing. :)

In ground heat 4' on center, 6" of foam, highway mat, then 475~ yards a day. 3am start time.,fun fun. Pour days I just had to clip trees on and make sure union boys pulled up mat. Had many a confrontation with the 21 year old supers. They forgot I've been in the mud since I was about 14. Not a real fun "trip" paid well tho!!

Crane pads are fun, I got lied to when i went to Washington to work. Prepped freezer building floor.

Did 2 or 3 of those back in the late 90's one in Jamestown NoDak, one in Parks Rapids, MN can't remember where the third one was.

Nice job for you! I got to puddle all those yards of 'crete, then help set up for the next day. Friggin' roasting on that foam in the 90 degree summer heat in NoDak!

You used to be allowed three layers in Indiana before code requires a tear-off back when I was contracting in Indy. If the edges ain't curled under yet on the tabs, You were good to go but that was 20 yrs ago. What's really frustrating is when your buddy's budget only allows for class B shingles (rejects) and he buys fourteen extra square for a forty square job so you can pick thru them all to get the best ones....
Because he saved so much money.

Haha....They might as well call it "schlong beach"...... at least that's what it seemed like when I went a long time ago......very dissapointing.

Purchased the truck from a long time customer. They never really used it much and they like me and my son so they decided to give me the "homie hookup" price. They live in la jolla and purchased it new from Mossy. I get lucky sometimes.

After being away from home for almost 2 weeks I was greeted in my shop by the smell of what I assumed was a cat that must've gotten locked inside when I last close the door. Unfortunately that was not the case and the power regulator on my beer (and meat) fridge went out at some point during those two weeks.

I left the shop open and left the fridge full of ground coffee and charcoal all week and today I washed the whole thing out with bleach and a lawn hose. It running now with 3 boxes of baking soda inside it.

Gag factor has dropped from 9.9 on the pukometer scale down to about 2.0. Hopefully it returns to tolerable soon.

The ground coffee helps get rid of the odor?

That's what the Internet said and I had some in the freezer, so I spread it all over the fridge side and tossed a bag of mesquite charcoal in the freezer side. Probably not the same as active charcoal, but that's what I had. The coffee side seems fresher that the charcoal side, but the meat was in the freezer, so I can't say what did what, but I can tell you the stench could be smelt over 100 yards away on a windless night when I opened the door the first time. I thought the neighbors were going to call the cops and report a dead body LOL!

The coffee works. We use it in refrigerated trailers. After hauling fish and seafood you have to get rid of the odor before you can pick up produce.

Yeah, I think the previous owner did a burnout with it since he wasn't able to ride it anymore. I traded a 87 250r I didn't have much tied up in for it. Wasn't having much luck selling it, and ended up trading. Not used to riding a cruiser type bike, I've ridden dual sports for the last 10 years. Definitely more comfortable then my Xr!

Well we are Going on a road trip to visit friends in arizona from mass, we left ma thursday after midnight so the kids would sleep the first part of trip. almost there just 22hrs left. Its starting to get warm!!!241995 i'll share a couple pics here if i get some interesting ones. No bikes with us but that doesn't mean one wont come home. Ok well back to driving. This was the upper part of our drive, it was the worst part but was real nice to get out of ma 242043

Edit later same day(now saturday pm) we checked in to a hotel just west of oklahoma city.
Havent seen much just lots of cows and farmland!!!!! Arkansaw was neverending. We should be In the upper part of texas by lunchtime sunday. This rt.40 were taking is in nice shape, 70mph nearly everywhere. Mostly 2-lane though but lots of rest areas for needed smoke breaks. The mississippi river is huge! Kinda cool to see. We've seen tons of 4-wheelers at gas stations but no 3 yet. Oh-it must be the time of year farmers spread the manure because some areas really stunk...
Just a rest area about in the middle of upper texas pic 242057

Well we just checked in at a hotel 10 miles from az border, holy crap its been a long drive!!!! Wifes say's about 200 more miles unti destnation! Thank god. We did stop here today its kinda cool, a bunch of old cadillacs buried with about 1-3" deep of spray paint that people have done over the years. 242087

Here!!! Scottsdale az --- so about 3- 12hr driving days + about 5hrs today(monday) its 92 degrese! But not humid so its nice...
I would recommend this route for anyone from mass. Stopped at a meteore crater in az, it was great.
I'll put pics up in this thread after a day or so.

It's hard to describe, but if you were to lock yourself in a meat freezer, close your eyes and think about having to wake up st 3:00am on a Monday morning to blow mounds of snow for three hours in order to get your vehicle out of the driveway so that you could get to work on time.

Now imagine that you've completed your blowing and shoveling only to find out that the breaker tripped on the circuit that was powering your block heater and now your car won't start so you need to find a neighbor who is willing to drive over and boost your battery long enough to get the car to start. unfortunately he's a bit of a late riser, so you'll have to help him shovel out his driveway in order to get his car over to give you that boost.

Now imagine that you've gotten to work all be at a little bit late but your boss is understanding because he lives in the same harsh environment that you do. Around noon your wife calls to tell you that the furnace has gone out. You call the repair man, but they have a three day backlog, so you have to ask your boss if you can go home and try and get the furnace fired up.

When you get home you are greeted with a fresh snow drifts across that driveway you cleaned out in the morning, so you have to park your car on the road and walk to the house. You will probably be able to get the furnace going, but in three hours it took you to do it the wind cooled your engine off to the point that you can no longer start your car, so you go hunting around for extension cords all over your property to try to string some out far enough to get your block heater plugged in out on the road. Once connected you fire up your blower and start clearing your driveway again so that you can get the car into the garage and repeat the cycle of winter survival in central Canada.

Fortunately spring will arrive in a few more months at which time you will be greeted with the beautiful view of bright green leafs emerging from previously frozen branches and the songs of birds returning from the south. You will also have the opportunity to wash your car for the first time in many many months, only to find that your three-year-old car now has what we call pork chops all around the wheel wells and rocker panels. These are caused by all the salt that is dumped on the road during the winter in order to reduce the amount of ice.

I think that's enough, you can come out of that meat freezer now and if it makes you feel any better the temperature in that meat freezer was probably about the same as what we would call a "nice day" in February.

These are caused by all the salt that is dumped on the road during the winter in order to reduce the amount of ice.

I think that's enough, you can come out of that meat freezer now and if it makes you feel any better the temperature in that meat freezer was probably about the same as what we would call a "nice day" in February.

Now,,,times that by 85 head of dairy cows ,,that MUST be milked twice a day, regardless of ANY and all circumstances. A fleet of 16 tractors, machinery and many other various machines that MUST be kept running,,,,and you now know where I got my character,,,,or,,,,stupidity from ... I still LOVE winter. It is calm, peaceful, quiet, and snowmobiling is hands down the most fun one can have with your clothes on...But that's just me, I am not in the majority of thinking around here either. And btw, what El said is an actual day for MANY. And it can be much worse lol...

In my 50 years of living in Minnesnowda, I have NEVER had a winter day like that. :wondering :beer

You're either blessed, or it doesn't get real cold where you are. Drive 3 hours North and a little to the West for the full winter experience. If that's not enough keep going for another 12 hours and you get to leave your truck running 24/7 because it's -50C and your transmission and power steering pumps will freeze up if you shut the vehicle off. The only way around leaving them on at -50C is to wrap the vehicle with a tarp and have two circulating block heaters on, but even then you need to start it up at 5:00am if you want to drive it at 7:00am. I've broken shifter linkage and water pump shafts when in a rush to get going and on one of our work trucks the power steering shaft snapped when they tried to move the wheel after warming it up for two hours. Metal does weird things when it gets cold.

BTW, we Canucks love watching the US news the day after you get a few inches of snow. Bumper cars "merican style" is our favorite show!

You can keep on wishing they were all California girls, but David Lee Roth was scooting strip joints in Winnipeg for hotties to appear in his videos back in the late 80's. Cold weather breeds some sweet looking women (but still bitchy as all heck) and because we feed em more natural foods than the ones South of the 49th they don't get them big ol corn fed butts the girls in North Dakota were famous for back when I was chasin tail.

I'm in central MN, worst we get is -30 and it ain't for long. Gets a bit colder up north. Plenty of tards after a snow storm fer sure, even here. If it was legal to play bumper cars on the street I would be doing it to push the idiot wussies outta the way.

I've heard that the "Southern ice" they get south of the snow belt is worse than our "Northern ice". At least that's the way it looks on the news.

There was rv and tent camping nearby also. Of course our hotel was two hour drive away but worth the trip.......
Town of sedona was full of shops, a very busy place!!(traffic) the sights around it were great. Check it out if u can.
The road from prescott az to sedona rt 89a through the mountains i recomend highly!!! (Not if u dont like hights though)

Fought with the husky weedwacker as noted in chainsaw thread. Got frustrated and moved to the Oliver. Great! No spark either from mag. Condenser is bad, coil windings are testing low imho but I don't have a spec as to what they should be. Gas tank is full of good brazing and bad epoxy repair. Chipped off the old epoxy. I have sealed many with jb weld as a quick repair in the past but on small tanks with less of a pressure head. I may braze. There is no carb so I will have to salvage something. Leak in rear diff. I don't think it leaked before I moved it but it was always on gravel so who knows? I may wish I parted it out!

Every time I look at his shop I soon realize I'd need to retire and hire half a dozen guys to keep up with the projects.

A friend of mine has been building his dream shop for the past 3 years. Two full time workers plus crews as needed. Welding shop, wood shop, greenhouse, his and her offices plus parking for the toys. It has to be close to 8,000sq. By the time he finishes it he'll be too old to use it, but what the heck, he with the most toys wins, so why not.

How much ya gonna ask for it? I really don't need it but ya never know lol. My uncle in CA has 83' cr 430, and a 84 wr 500 huskys. This was the first one I've seen in a few years that actually needed help. It seems as though I only see one a year, always on my way to work in the mid afternoon. The last few years were massive snapping turtles the size of watermelons. By the time I had my car pulled over in a safe place and my camera out they are already across the street back in the water. They move a lot fast than one would expect for big turtle.

Painting the ones we purchased scoots. I don't beleive I could have made them less expensive then what we paid for the unfinished cabinets. Only one little backer strip is OSP. All else plywood with solid maple face + shelves.
Kind of realize now that first coating of paint with that spray gun my brother gave me years ago is more for thinner materials like lacquer ,,, stains,,,, off to purchase a sprayer better suited for the job.
Besides that, the red paint I bought for doors and drawers,,,, well the Mrs. said it isn't Honda red so it has to go back for darkening :) She has convinced me there needs to be some contrasting colors other then just white,,, look like a sanitarium she said ~ lol.

You did prime/seal first right? I've never had luck with red paint unless it's mat finish.

I have found thought that replacing the thin backing on store bought items with 3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood and glueing and screwing in in place adds a lot of rigidity to the units and because I live in a cement box I bolt a 2 inch angle iron to the wall to support the shelves and then lag them to the wall. That way I can make sure everything is nice and level and it's easy for me to raise and position the shelves all by myself as my wife is nowhere near as handy as yours seems to be.

Trippledog,,,, how the did you get those logs into your truck by yourself ?

I cut some slices from a willow tree that was about 3 feet wide at the base, to make them easier to load on my truck. Unbeknownst to me, it would end up working to my advantage. I brought a timber jack and a plastic 55 gallon drum with me to help provide leverage and a fulcrum. The first log was the base, so it was the heaviest. I used the timber jack to lift the butt log (hey, Beavis, he said butt log...) enough to get a willow slice under it, and then stacked a couple slices next to to the log, rolled the log onto them, and kept adding slices and shifting the log side to side onto the stacked slices until the drum would fit under the log, and used the drum as a pivot point. I used a piece of 1 by pine as a chock to keep the log from rolling off the slices and falling on me. I backed the truck until the log slid a few feet over the tailgate . Then it was just a matter of lifting and pushing the log onto the truck, moving the log less than a foot with each go. I only needed the drum for the first log, but loading all three logs took nearly an hour.

WOO HOO! Someone just scored some lumber to mill to make new stair treads. I am glad that I had previously enhanced the performance of my truck by adding the window sticker...

Anytime you paint something red prime it with a dark gray first.

This morning a bunch of parts came in for my z50 roller I scored at a garage sale. I installed basically everything today just to see how it all looks. This was the day I brought it home:

A few clicks on the Android and a few days later:

I did a little google search on my fiddy & was surprised to find out its a very low serial # 1968 Z50. Pretty interesting:

http://randymarble.com/HondaZ50K01968-16.htm

When I opened up my eBay engine I discovered the head was broken at the exhaust. There was a guy on Offerup practically giving stuff away. So I drove hella far to see his stuff as he was taking a bunch of junk to get scrapped.

I ended up taking more of his junk pile home. 2 of the engines have good compression. :naughty:

And den .....with the esposa ........hit me baby one more time ......i`m not that innocent ......i would NEVER have gone with my parents to a concert !!!!!

It's different when you have a single child who grew up in a city where the odds of her being kidnapped walking 1/2 a block to the park are pretty high and her nearest friend lives 30 minutes away by car. I felt like I had her under house arrest most of her life. Even to school and back is in our car everyday as there are no public school buses here. You end up being a parent and a friend (not an easy juggle. let me tells ya). She's gone to a few concerts with just school friends in MTY, but this was her 16th birthday gift from Mom, so we went together. There was a mid 20's couple next to us dry humping most of the concert, so at the very least we managed to block most of that view.

On the walk there she kept pointing out all the people smoking dope and I kept saying: "Are you sure? Is that what it smells like? Really??? How can you tell???"

Fighting dozer idlers. Waiting on parts for the Oliver so I decided to attack the idlers on the international, what a mess. Anyone a dozer mechanic?
No longer can source the bellow seals that sealed the axles
Spun bushings from prior poor repair
Steel bushing used in one side of repair
Need to make new axles and bore and press in bushings and then cobble some sort of seal together, no idea what I can put in there. Maybe some sort of rear main seal but the spring/bellow seal seems ideal, just no source. Not to mention the one wheel that someone already tried to "fix"

Rope is a great thought Fabio. I seem to remember using it on a prop shaft. Let me do some research!

It might be helpful if you posted photos of where it goes . Then I or others may come up with a few suggestions for substitutes . If rope will work then maybe consider nylon rope because it is not as susceptible to deteriorating/rotting from the weather as cotton or hemp type is, but if the boot rotates with the wheel and axle like they do on a cv joint on a car, you might be able to make something fairly easy like possibly cutting a piece of thick wall plastic or delrin etc to the right length to trap a seal on both ends if it needs to seal against the wheel, then machining a groove in both ends that can hold a thick o ring or other type of seal . If it needs to seal on the od of a shaft, you can find a seal that will work then cut a recess so it has around .001" of press fit so it doesn't pop out.

PREVIOUS KAWASAKI INTERNATIONAL R & D PROJECT ENGINEER AND ATV DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR

plastikosmd
05-14-2017, 11:41 AM
The seal sits in the cavity of the wheel shown with the 4 locating pin holes. The seal has the pins so that it does not spin with wheel rotation. The springs force the seal against the wheel and the flange that carries the pin. This seals the end of the pin from dirt and allows for some motion between the flanges. It seems to seal two opposing surfaces allowing for the motion noted rather than the OD of the shaft. I like your delrin idea and can add pockets and springs. The key are the bellows to seal between the 2 faces. Maybe some cut cv boot but then tying that to each delrin piece=ugh

fabiodriven
05-14-2017, 11:55 AM
Yup, I think he's on to something with the delrin as well. Delrin with O-ring grooves and possibly rope on the ends...

barnett468
05-14-2017, 03:07 PM
I would really need a bit more info but trying to seal a flat surface that is rotating is not ideal . If the wheel is on a fixed shaft, it might be easier to fix the seal housing to the wheel so it rotates with it then use a conventional type shaft seal to seal on the shaft . These types of seals allow for both rotating and in and out movement . This way if you only need to seal the wheel, whatever you use for a seal housing does not need to extent to the opposing surface.

If you need to seal both opposing surfaces, you could also possibly make 2 seal holders with a spring in the middle and a torrington bearing on the side that needs to rotate with the wheel etc.

I considered both of your suggestions. A simple seal like a rear main seal would be easier but because of the dirt and abrasives that can pack in the hub, I assume that is why this bellow type is used. I'm your second design which is similar in scope, they just used a flat bronze washer to scuff against ( once again due to dirt and silt etc). Thank u for your ideas

The inside of the tank is just as clean as the outside. Previous owner never put fuel in it because he didnt want to varnish up the carb. Im going to inspect it before trying to start it up on a grassy field, lol.

It weighs twice as much as a Honda CT70.

In the process of addressing that I found at least 2 other lines that were leaking but hadn't completely blown out yet between the MC and ABS modulator... FUN! So I got a complete preformed stainless brake line kit for the whole truck from Napa for a little over $100. Every steel line in the truck has been replaced, what a job! So then I go to open the bleeders on the front calipers only to have the bleeders crumble (thanks to NY salt) despite every measure I could take to extract them. SO back to the parts store I go to get a pair of new calipers simply due to rotted bleeders, more $$$...yay! Problem now is the ABS modulator on the frame rail is airlocked and I am unable to get the rears to bleed. Fronts bled out good though. I have to take the truck to a shop and have the rears powerbled. I've tried everything I can, got the ABS pump to cycle in a dirt driveway probably 40 times and still no dice... :(

On to the next project, my 2000 Chevy k3500 needs a new pitman arm.. Lots of cursing, skinned knuckles, two cut lines, and complete removal of the plow frame and I got the steering gearbox out and old pitman arm removed yesterday. What a mother of a job! Now I have to get a new power steering cooler as well as a hydroboost line from the gearbox to the brake MC as I was unable to get those lines disconnected from the gearbox and had to cut them instead.... I've had about enough of working on vehicles for awhile..and I'm not even done yet.

And den.....you light da cronik ..........my god ..... what are all these parts ? ......where is my beautiful wife ? ......what have i done ?

I think I put everything back the right way. Not bad for my first time, the camshaft is in the center case below the engine. This should make setting the points interesting.

The crankshaft has a hook on it. Anyone know what its for? Anyway Im going to fire it up later this morning and start the engine too.:naughty:

Some advice needed.........

Working on my 94 Silverado today....replacing the starter...... and the one I purchased must have had an 10mm shafts because my stock cable wouldn't fit (I'm assuming stock is 8mm). No problem.......I'll just drill it a tick bigger and be good to go. But while drilling it caught and ripped the end right off. OK......still no biggie.......just get a new cable like I should have purchased as well. Only problem is is its a 2 gauge cable and all I can find on a sunday at the local places is 4 gauge. Truck doesn't need to be done today but I would like it done today so I'm wondering if going with the 4 gauge would be acceptable. Not very long.....just an inch or two over 36 inches....

I really want a new cable as I can feel the stiffness of the old one seem to "crack" when I straightened it out to measure it.

Thoughts?
