Hello I have a 1985 honda atc 70 and I,m not getting any spark. The switch, coil and plug are good. put in a stator and points and still nothing. The one thing I can't figure out is Im doing the ignition timing inspection with a lightbulb and a 6 volt battery and the light will not dim at all. The points are just starting to open at the fire mark but light wont dim at all. If anybody could help me figure this out that would be great.

Thanks
Joe

So, when you put it all back together with the new points, you can set an initial gap, but this is never (in my experience) close enough. After the flywheel is put back on, and when you have the timing light system working, you reach through the opening in the flywheel and use a large flat bladed screwdriver to adjust the gap. You need to loosen the screw holding the points just enough to allow you to adjust, but tight enough not to loose your setting. Look and you'll see a notch in the casting next to the points, and a notch in the points themselves. You use the wide flat blade screw driver half in the casting, half in the notch in the points to tweak the gap larger or smaller to eventually get the bulb to go from bright to dim right at the F mark.

Thanks Frank Im going to try some more and hope it starts working.

By the way, it isn't always a dramatic change in the brightness of the bulb... I've used a 12V car battery and an 1157 car taillamp bulb before. Using a 6V battery and bulb should be fine too. Just try little adjustments and see if you can get any switching of the lamp.

I don't know if you have the service manual (download it if you don't), but here are the sections of the manual that describe the details of getting this going:

Initial Gap Setting:
241458

Ignition Timing Inspection:
241459

Advancing or Retarding Timing:
241460

A couple of items to mention:
1. The light should dim when the points open, which should be when the pointer hits the "F" mark.
2. Rotate the flywheel counter clockwise to make sense of the advance or retard adjustments. Advanced = further ahead of TDC, Retard = closer to TDC or further AFTER TDC.

Thanks Frank maybe ill wait and try again tonight when its dark because I couldn't see any diming at all yesterday. Do you know if theres any other possible cause that might keep that light from dimming? Thanks

Assuming the light is on and you aren't seeing any change in the brightness, you could be facing one of two different situations:
1. The light is stuck on "bright" mode
2. The light is stuck on "dim" mode.

What causes it to be bright or dim?
* Points Closed: If the points are closed (and clean and conducting properly) the battery power flows directly through the light bulb with no resistance at all (other than the bulb itself). This makes the bulb brightest.
* Points Open: If the points are open, then the power has to flow through the stator coil as well as the light bulb (in series). Since the stator coil has some resistance, the bulb will appear dimmer. The stator coil doesn't have a lot of resistance, so the difference isn't always super noticeable.

If you have a multi-meter, you could use it inline and watch the current (amps) flowing through the circuit. Don't skip using the bulb, there would be too much current flowing otherwise (basically a dead short when the points are closed). But a multi-meter may make the jump a lot more observable. So bright would equal higher current and dim would equal something lower current.

I wouldn't mess with points at all I ordered electric replacement kit from Malaysia for atc 70 to make it a Cdi ignition best money ever spent. It includes a larger stator for running a light and everything. It bolts right in no modification. Throw the junk points away. You don't even have to time it, it does it all with sensing polarity change. Slap in and go!

Hey Frank the light would not dim at all not even a little so I bought a used stator with the base and all and put it in today and now the light dims very noticeable and I have it set just right where the F mark is is when it dims but still no spark. I took the coil and plug to a guy and he put it on a test and both work and I checked the kill switch and its working proper too cleaned all connections and wires are working properly. Im stumped and more ideas of anything I can try? I have another atc 70 I bought a few days ago and am thinking about taking everything off it but the stator and putting it on the one not running and see if maybe that can fix the problem.
Thanks
