View Full Version : Who is a musician? In a band?

Due to Barn posting a video on his amp thread I figured I would ask who else is a musician here? I got out of playing for about 5 years, then last year met some cool guys and started playing again. We played a lot of festivals, bars, and parties last year. We have a 90s hard rock sound, not necessarily my thing but people seem to like it lol. We recently got a new bass player and played a festival last Friday night. I play drums. (On a house kit for this show unfortunately) Here is a song from the show, starts off slow then ends strong-

EZ you guys are great! That's fantastic! I truly wish I could play the drums. There is an inner musician trapped inside of that's been struggling to emerge for years. I bought a guitar because obviously it's easier and cheaper than buying drums, but I'd love to learn to be a percussionist someday. Thanks for posting!

He Fabio, as you probably read on my thread, I initially only wanted to be a drummer, however, after having a guitar, I quickly learned that there is far more potential to get chicks if you play guitar, mainly cuz you can take it with you everywhere and whip it out at anytime and start playin with it which chicks seem to like http://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/hysterical.gif, however, it's kinda hard to haul a drum set around, plus it's kinda hard to play love ballads on the drums which chicks also seem to like . It also takes a lot less effort to play guitar, therefore, guitar players can be kinda lazy if they want. http://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Post a video, I'm sure ezmoney won't mind . You don't have to be a great player to qualify either . I'm not and I posted one on my amplifier thread after someone asked me too.

Extremely cool ez . You guys have a good sound and your timing on drums is xlnt, plus ya got the "look", lol . I also like your singer a lot . As you know, good singers are very hard to come by . I was also the singer in some of the bands I was in but it wasn't because I was good, it was only cuz I sucked a little less at it than the other guys. http://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/hysterical.gif

I have a long history with music, but in the interest of keeping this comment reasonably short I'll just say that yes I am/was a musician. Used to be pretty good on guitar and was starting to be able to play in a Chet Atkins picking type of style. I played drums in a band with my dad and his uncle. None of us can read a note of music, just play by ear. We played old school (read REAL) country, old rock n roll and whatnot. It was alot of fun for a time.

My Dad passed away last September and my interest in playing music died with him. As much as it pains me to let him down as his wishes were for us (my three siblings and I) to continue the family musical tradition, it's just not in me right now. I still can't listen to our recorded music without losing it. My relationship with music is complicated right now. I am also a metal head and have been immersing myself in it when I listen to tunes. It's the only music that doesn't make me miss my dad really bad.

Berklee drop out here, been playing the Bass Gee-tar since I was 16. I Started out in a prog-rock band, been in some jam bands, post hardcore and prog-metal. Currently with out a band. Working a night shift… it's hard to find a band that practices during daylight hours.

I know it hasn't been that long since your father passed, but for me music is the absolute best thing I have to remember my dad by. Neither of us had any musical talent so we never had the bond of playing tohether, but the memories of it through my childhood and young adulthood take me back instantly to better times the second I hear a familiar song. I can't listen to The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Zepplin, Sabbath, Cream, Skynryd, CCR, etc., without instantly thinking of him. Hopefully that comes back to you as time heals all wounds. Without music in my life I would absolutely be lost.

Thank you for sharing Ride Red. My dad introduced me to music and playing drums (although he is really a guitar player). We used to play back when I was younger.
What kind of metal do you listen to?

Can't claim to be an actual musician anymore as it has been well over a decade since I've played anything but I started out in 6th grade playing the trumpet, then moved to the bass, then guitar until finally deciding I was going to be a drummer. Which thankfully stuck. I played in a death metal band from early to mid nineties, absolutely loved it but our guitarist ended up sleeping with our bass players wife and that was the end of that. Although I picked up the sticks a few more times there really wasn't anything significant after that.

Thanks for the uplifting words and the intent that comes with them guys. My Dad was an amazingly talented man. He sang very well, played drums in his younger days (and he was still better than I ever could be) played guitar and bass.

I've been into bands like Pantera, AIC (Layne Staley), Korn, Ozzy and the like for a long long time, since I was in high school in the mid 90s. Long time Metallica fan too, mostly Black album and earlier but still dig their newer stuff found on Load, and Reload. They kind of lost me after those though, basically after Jason left the band. Newer stuff I like, FFDP, Slipknot, Chevelle, Slash with Myles, Avatar, Halestorm, Red to name a few. Then there are the old classics, AC/DC and GnR come to mind right off the bat.

Sorry for derailing the thread a little bit there. In hindsight I think I probably should have kept that stuff to my self. After re-reading what I posted above, it was selfish of me.

An old band mate/good friend of mine is a multi-instrumentalist. He is awesome on drums, bass, and keys but is truly phenomenal on guitar. Any guitar style he can play it. Really amazing to watch. Unfortunately he spent too much time in his bedroom playing guitar and didn't learn many "life" skills. I think his mom still washes and folds his clothes. He is 35.

Drums since middle school but rarely the last 20 yrs. Wife bought me a mandolin and I have a banjo somewhere but I never had the patience to learn them. Like Barnett said, drums suck when you need to be mobile and girls dig guitar players so I lost interest when I was girl chasing age. I've wanted to get another kit and start playing again but there's no room in the house or garage for it and I don't need another reason to drop a couple thousand bux on the kit I need.

I made the first part of the video below for my vintage amplifier thread to show what one of my amps can sound like when it's turned up a bit because there seemed to some interest in that, however, I couldn't play the song I wanted to at the time because I sliced the bejesus out of my finger with a razor blade just a few days before and it hurt like fk all when I tried to play, then it stated bleeding again while I was playing, so last night I added what I originally wanted to play to the same video because it has a more "aggressive" setting and sound, but since ez made this very cool thread, I asked him if he would mind if I posted it here and he kindly said yes.

Please excuse the sloppy playing as I haven't even picked up a guitar for around 20 years . If the first song sucks too much for you, you can skip ahead to the 3 minute mark and try that section . If that sucks too much also you can just go back to ezmoneys first post and listen to his again cuz his doesn't suck at all.

I'm using a Roland GX20 transistor amp which has built in modeling features and a tube sound replicator circuit . They can be found on Ebay for around $100.00 or sometimes less and are only 18"x18" square so it doesn't take up much room . I am not using any external effects boxes and am using a quarter as a pick because it makes it sound a bit more bright/sharp, plus I have only used a plastic pick a few times in my life and can't hardly play with one. . The first song has some reverb and a tiny bit of delay . The second song only has a tiny bit of delay . If you listen closely you can hear a tube type sound . It has even more sustain and feedback if I turn it up a little more but I didn't want to piss the neighbors off.

Rock on Garth!

Probably so. My oldest younger brother lives there. He said they were closing Jannus Landing/Jannus Live or whatever they call it to build condos.

I used to drag race over that long bridge between St.Pete and Tampa (Howard Franklin maybe it was called?)

I didn't live there long. Maybe eight months before I moved back to Indiana because I couldn't find a decent job back then

A couple people told me my video links were not working . I think it is because they were too long and I had to get verified from youtube to post videos longer than 8 minutes so I just did that so hopefully this link will work . It repeats itself after 6 minutes for some reason so I probably loaded it twice onto the same video cuz I have no idea yet how youtube works.

Yup, no debate about that whatsoever, however, if identical twins show up at a party and one says "Hi girls, I'm a drummer.", but has no drum set with him, and the other says nothing but whips out his guitar and starts playin, who do ya think is most likely to get a chick? :naughty:

If a woman thought like a man, she'd realize the drummer has rythm, time, patience and dexterity. While the type of guy that shows up to a party with a guitar just wants to fiddle his string all day and play solos.

Thought I would give this a bump. Back in 2010 my old band had the pleasure playing at the Satyricon. A place where many a famous bands have played and started their careers (we didn't lol). The place where Courtney met Kurt. Legend of a place. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satyricon_(nightclub) We knew we were in for a good crowd when we noticed a large chunk of hair on a sharp tack/nail in the center pillar of the front floor area. No doubt the result of an errant body checking mosh pit move! Unfortunately the camera our friend was using was absolutely terrible at picking up audio (terrible). We were in the middle of our prog/hardcore/melodic/scream phase. I don't expect any of you to sit through listening to this mess but I just thought I would share :beer

Hey ez, I saw your video above just now as I was looking up your thread to ask you if you ever found the second vid you mentioned. I see you got a little singin in there near the end as well. Very cool. It motivated me make another video, which probably wasn't a good idea since it's about as sloppy as the other two I posted. Perhaps a little practice after not playing for 20 years might not hurt me.

Anyway, I think the more hammared one is, the better all mine will sound.

Without any further delay...here's another one of barnetts fine examples of how not to play the geetar.

Well I figured I'd bump this thread AGAIN with yet another example of barnetts musical stylings, still hoping that ezmoney will finally get tired of my videos and finally post another one like said he would...but maybe since he's a drummer he lacks the stamina to do that.

Here we have a little Heartbreaker by Grand Funk RR done barnett style to a bass and keyboard backing track. This is still with my new Ebay special $60.00 Roland amp cuz I ain't had time to get my Band Master fixed yet but I will hopefully be working on that pretty soon. I had a hair too much reverb on this and made 2 small mistakes, but....fluk it.

Sorry, I've really been slacking on this update! Here is a video of our band Through the Sky! We had the pleasure of opening up for the band Helmet this summer at a local event called the Melomane Festival. The founding member/guitarist/vocalist Page Hamilton was raised here in Medford.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_Hamilton

Got to drink beer, get autographs and mingle after the show. Then ran into them and bought them a round at a pub.
It was 107 degrees when we took the stage so it wasn't our most enthusiastic performance but quite the experience never the less. Our singer and bass player had prior arrangements and made it to the show with minutes to spare breaking some speed limits in said bass players Camaro SS:beer Check out that drum roll at 1:08 lol.

We also played a "battle of the bands" at one of our local fairs-we didn't place last year:(. We were up against some serious competition once again and just like last year we knew going in who the winner would be (not us). But we were glad to get second place because we are good friends with the winning band Hardway Bend! It was a few degrees cooler at this show since the sun had gone down.
We definitely had a blast........ Now reviewing the video I see I broke a stick at 2:08 and had to make a recovery! Also got to make a little disabled girls night by giving her my sticks......... But I got stood up on the high five..... Oh well. This is once again "Lead to Waste" by Through the Sky!
https://youtu.be/I7cJjCyjP70

And the song "Simple Release"
https://youtu.be/5wAgtCLVrQE

We tend to play these mellower songs when we have a limited amount of time in order to possibly reach a larger audience? I don't know...... We have some very good (IMO) heavy material that I can hopefully share soon!

Since no one asked for it here is the song "Good Gone Bad" we played at a random weed festival last year. Our singer tends to thrive in at these outdoor events. I think he kills it with the extra reverb:beer
