So I have decided to somewhat start restoring my 200x. My dad actually bought it in 85 and kept it in great shape. But it has just been sitting around so I have decided to take it off his hands. I am making this thread to keep somewhat of a log for me and to get to know some of the members here. I'll be trying to post pics of as much as I can of the project. 242465

Getting ready to do some painting. Gonna sand em down and wire brush most of the stuff, then I'll re paint them all black. Some parts are pretty well rusted underneath so I'll have to take care of that.

sandblast and powdercoat.

I second that vote.

Here are my thoughts: the machine looks to be in VERY good condition from the pics you posted. If you are really planning on restoring it, then you'll want to use methods that put it back into equal or better condition than new. Please don't take the comment as too negative, but just wire brushing and spray painting will end up with less than you have now. Spray paint will look nice until you ride. I think in the long run, it will wind up looking worse than it does right now.

Sandblasting and powder coating are definitely more costly, but the results will last much longer.

Personally, my vote would be to do some disassembly, clean everything very well, lube bearings, replace anything worn out, and reassembly and ride!

Good luck with the project!

So I have decided to do like members have suggested and have the parts sand blasted and powder coated. Just need to find someone in my area who does it. Do you guys have any recommendations as to what all parts I should powder coat? In example should I have the handle bars done for the heck of it? I don't want some stuff to look so to say better then other parts. I guess for now I'll just keep tearing it apart and cleaning everything as I put it back together. But since the 200 is outta commission I'll just have some fun with my 250 trax:)

I am biased, but my guys in St. Louis are some of the best IMO. Their website is below.

I am soooo......jealous of your nice seat and fender.

It looks very nice. I have never been a fan of blasting. Walnut, etc are better choices but more $$. I like to chemically remove finishes with a power washer when I can.

It is very nice and original looking. I'd be tempted to keep sliders clear coated instead of black.

So until I get home I can't drop the parts off to get them powder coated so I have started to polish up all the metal things. Also wanted to give a huge shoutout to a fellow member for sending me a fork slider replacement! Managed to buff out most of the scratches and polish everything. I gotta say I am super pleased with how it turned out, so good that I am gonna keep them silver instead of painting them black to keep that original look.

Got the disk cleaned up and the fork back on. Now time to shine up the parts on the bike and reinstall:)

So I have gotten everything back together. Runs like brand new. Only problem is the bolts snapped off where the heat shield is:( Anyone have any advice? I thought about welding it back on but that was gonna be my last resort.

Could you actually cut off the whole thing and then weld a nut back in place? It may not be original, but you will only see h head of the blot when the heat shield is back on.

^^That sounds like a good plan.

Some auto part stores sell barrel nuts..........kinda like what was already on there stock.

Edit.......... are there any threads left on the otherside?...........like I did on my 200x?

I'm not exactly sure what you guys mean by barrel nuts. I looked them up but I don't see how they work. Do you have any pictures that could explain it? But I mean at that point I could just invest in a new DG exhaust. It wouldn't be original but it would upgrade performance. You think I should fix it or replace it?

Or, drill it and extract

I guess it's technically called a "cylinder nut" but it looks like this.

I enclosed a couple pics of what I did to mine. You will need to weld it and you could try to take it out but judging by how these exhaust things go......be prepared for some welding. I just turned it around and welded it back on and it worked fine.

A DG exhaust would be nice but everyone says they are loud.

So I drive this trike at night a lot and I didn't like the stock bulb. So I went out and bought a led bulb. The brightness is 10x better then what it was.242630242631

Got the muffler sanded and smoothed out. It's too late to paint it tonight so hopefully tomorrow will be warm enough to paint it. On that note, I ended up not cutting and welding the muffler. Instead I drilled a hole in the old bolt and drilled in a larger screw and it seems to work great.

Give that paint a few minor heat cycles before riding it too hard. Start it and let it idle and get the exhaust a little hot, then shut off and let it cool. I think it helps the paint last longer. I've had pretty good luck with that paint on my 350x header, I think you'll like it.

Thanks wonderboy. I will do that, hopefully it lasts as long as the original.

Got the painting done, gonna let it sit for 30 minutes and re coat. I'll wait a hour or two and reinstall then run some heat cycles.

Got the exhaust hooked all back up. Except I think one of the screws I used for the heat guard punctured the exhaust so now a tiny bit of fumes leak out. Anyone have any suggestions on like a glue or something to just kinda of cover it? Next project on this trike was gonna be maybe getting some new sprockets and a chain. Lemme know if you guys think I should replace the chain or not.

Looks nice!

Rear sprocket looks good.

I just looked over what I paid for things and my chain was $19 and front sprocket was $11. I purchased both on ebay. My chain was in much worse shape than yours is though.

Had some fun with the 200 and the 250 today. Sad to see the 200 get dirty again. Oh well

Actually I think that the sprocket is starting to show a little wear, but you should be fine for a while yet. The rear sprocket on my 350x has more wear than that and I'm still running it for now.

I'd use a high heat epoxy to cover the exhaust bolt. I know JB weld has a high heat version but I've never used it. Just keep in mind means your bolt is forever now. Or try some high heat silicone. Bronze works ok but I think would burn off eventually from that spot

Just picked up a new toy:) 91' Phazer she's running beautiful. Just needs a little TLC. Family member picked it up for me. 500$! What a steal! The skii's are freshly powder coated.
