1981 ATC 70 I got for 100 dollars. Struggles to run, has a rusted tank, but the plastics are in awesome shape. Frame and forks are straight, the tires hold air, but it has a very weak spark.
I will be cleaning it up and working on it tomorrow to try to get it running. If anyone has any tips on what to look for, I would greatly appreciate them.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170508/4edb90ad33d1f3f10bc704a0c46ad707.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170508/aa66e467c81ba1c49186bbc974a46613.jpg

Always start the the carb. Take the bowl off and see how it looks. In my experience depending how clean it is gives a good outlook on how easy it will be to get running. I don't know if those have point or a coil.... either way I would say take a look at the stator if it has weak spark

Time to pull out the trusty points file and adjust some points.

Turns out that the guy I bought it from doesn't know how to test if a plug is firing, plenty of spark, definitely enough to get my attention.
I pulled off the tank and it is rough, the inside is very rusted but the hole on the side is fixable, I plan on getting some epoxy and tank liner, and see what I can do to patch it.
The bike will run, but only if I manually choke it, I made my own gasket to go on the bottom of the intake manifold so it is possible that there is a leak. The valves are set about right and the carb is clean. Any ideas on what to check?

She's alive! With the help of some break clean and my beer bottle gas tank, I was able to take my first ride. It won't run without the choke being on, but it's a start. It smoked a lot at first, but quit after about 5 minutes of riding.
Found that I had a leak where the carb mounts to the manafold, electrical tape will have to work for now.
So glad to hear the engine run.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170509/db09985e6a71f454ef9283b4a97b15c0.jpg

If it only runs with the choke the carb is either clogged or needs some fuel/air adjustment

Found that I am missing gaskets where the carb mounts. Going to pull the carb and clean it, again, and make some gaskets this afternoon.

Decided to check compression just for fun and it only has around 60 psi. Guess it's time for a top end rebuild.
Might be a little bit until anything new happens.
