So the other day, I managed to seal the deal on a air fooler 250r. Its totally original and has been in storage for the past 10 years. The original owner only used it to put around following her kids. It still has crazy compression still on original piston and rings. The owner put contact on all fenders, tank and headlight to protect them in 1984 which worke really well. I'm in the process of pulling it off and restoring these parts. The rear rack looks somewhat home made? It needs a mild overhaul but nothing crazy as I plan to ride it, I may buy some maier plastics so I done ruin the oem ones. It starts easy and will be a fun reliable bike to ride. I'll post updates of my progress of getting this up to scratch. It even has the original tool kit under the seat with all the tools! Might take a while as I have a 70 build going atm and a ktm engine to finish rebuilding

Nice score! What is this "contact" that was put on the fenders? A clear removeable covering?

Yeah pretty Much, It peels off leaving the plastic in new condition after cleaning the residue off.

Good idea to save the NOS plastics. You'll never regret it once you have the new ones paid for.

I would swap out all of the old hoses and make sure the gas tank and carb were cleaned out but you probably did all of that already

Yeah mate, carbs already been cleaned and tank has next to zero rust. I will be replacing the hoses from tank to carb though (Y)

So finally got to attend to this project after it being on the back burner.
Plastics are cleaned up still need a polish but pretty happy.

The tank came up pretty well. A few chips here and there but overall pretty happy with it.

246459

Rear fender came up good, just need to get the small crack plastic welded by my boilmaker buddy

246460

Air fooler fins came up pretty well.

246461

Front fender also came up pretty well so far. There's a few scatches that will need some buffing but

246462

Headlight Cowel/shroud came up really well.

I'm thinking that the rear axle carrier bearings need replacing, so stripping that down is next on the agenda.

Looks awesome man, going to be a slick looking original rider for sure!

The plastics are looking good oldoo! What'd you use on them?

I just peeled the contact off, and used some novus plastic shine. They still need a more agressive buff though.

So I've been chipping away at the bike, rear axle and carrier came out today with no major issues. A new set of bearins, seals and a good clean and she will be back together.
But before that I plan to regrease all of the swingarm linkages while it the axles out. Hopefully none of the linkage bits need replacing but the regreasing and cleaning will make it easier to disasemble in future when it will.

246506

Will rebuild the rear caliper as it seemed to be a bit siezed up. Will post pics of the caliper rebuild, stay posted.

246507

The rear carrier seems to be in pretty good condition besides the bearings lol

So I fitted an aftermarket chain slider. It was a real pain in the neck to fit, requiring over an hour with the die grinder but I finally got it to fit.

So I managed to tear down the swingarm as planned. Hopefully the parts just need a clean up and some fresh grease and will go back in and last another 33 years haha

So I've been working on some widened foot pegs for this build. Here are some progress pics. They are made from flat bar and just bent in the vice. I've tried to follow the shape of the oem pegs (I still have some cleaning up with the grinder to do). I have machines some pins on the lathe to go through the factory holes in the original pegs and weld them to the flat bar. Should be nice and strong. As for the groove where the foot rests on, I have a 240v deemel type tool that I'll use.

So a lot has happened since I last updated the thread. I got the rear shock rebuilt and it looks schmick.

I welded up the footpegs, sandblasted them and painted them. They came up really good.

I did go harder with the die grinder after this photo to make the grooves deeper for better grip.

So I cleaned up the front end over the past while. Powder coated bars and master cylinder guard. Pretty happy with how it's come up.
I still need to clean/restore the fork legs. But I did the fork boots and they came up nice.

Fitted the new tyres today. Man it's a headache with only tyre levers. Just need to seat the beads.

Still waiting on my mate to press the sprocket hub back onto my replated axle.... slowly but surely it will get there.

So I've been spending some time polishing the exhaust. It looks like The factory exhaust has been chrome plated. Can anyone confirm this?

So still waiting for the rear axle to get sorted.... Rear brake caliper piston has been ordered so once that arrives I'll do the brake system. The bike should be a rider again once those two things are sorted.

Anyway, I installed the rear Grab bar today, it looks nice.

And we are all back together. Happy days. Still fairy original, I’ll keep tidying up bits here and there, but it’s a nice mostly original rider.

I love how much you paid attention to all the small details. That should keep you smiling for a long time to come.
Just in time for the first day of summer in Australia, right?
What types of terrains do you have to ride it?

Cheers mate, I wanted to keep it as original as possible but where things needed to be restored I did so.

I mostly have trail terrain or dunes to ride it on. Nothing too crazy as I’m still getting used to riding it. The wider rear axle does help the handling.

It’s running mint and plug looks nice and brown.
