I am wanting to replace the carrier on my 85 350x with a billet one, but everything on eBay is for an 86. Do you guys know if I can make it work? What is the difference? I used to have an 86 but sold it like an idiot years ago, hence now I have an 85 and another expensive project. Also, anyone familiar with the extended swingarms from HRE? They look pretty nice. I was thinking about doing an extended swingarm because I am going to do the fork conversion to inverts, just not sure how it will handle in the woods then. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

I have a plus two from HRE and it's about 2 years old. I also have an 85 but when I did the swinger I upgraded everything to 86 style. Rear brake carrier etc. probably you best bet.

So all I would need is an 86 rear brake setup? What is the difference between the two, the calipers? How do you like your plus 2 Shawn? I was thinking about going 4, but some people say that is too long.

Are the 85 and 86 swingarms the same and the brake setup is the only difference?

I like the plus 2. I think 4 would have been TWO much ( see what I did there?) it turns nice and the ride is good. I guess it depends on your style and type of riding. Mines trails and desert. I don't know if the swingers are different between years.

LOL, I like that Shawn. I will be riding trails and a little bit on my local MX track. I am just trying to do as much research as I can before making a decision. I don't want to mess up the geometry of the bike too much. I know HRE makes them for only an 86, so I picked up the 86 brake mounting bracket off eBay. I believe the actual calipers are the same.

The difference in the carriers is the sprocket bolts on the axle the 85's have a normal bolt that holds the sprocket on and the 86's have a machine type head bolt that hold the sprocket on. If you try and use a 85 axle set up with a 86 carrier the bolts will hit carrier

big specht is right about the bolts
they will hit the 86 carrier
theres a few options here
1 you can get lower profile bolts or grind the head of yours (i dont like that option)
2 you can get an 86 sprocket and bolts best(best option)
3 get a durablue (other manufactures may be the same but i have durablue) axle the sprocket hub is threaded so the bolts dont stick out on the carrier side
heres my 85 350x durablue axle and hub 86 billet carrier

Guys, thanks for the responses. Axeman, I used to have an 86 350x and had a durablue axle and loved it. I cannot remember where I purchased mine at. Do you know of somewhere that would have a better deal over others? Also, as long as I buy a new axle, the carrier for an 86 will be fine? I do not need to change anything else?

Is there a certain brand billet carrier that is better than others? Or will any one of them off eBay fit the bill?

I had good luck with Niche. Fit well haven't had any problems. Looks nice also. It's a double row type.

That's the exact one I bought axeman. I've had a couple niche products on other bikes never any issues. I just took this one out to grease it after a couple years. Took about half a pump and was still good. For whatever that's worth.
