I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to (if possible) to resurface a cylinder head?? My 350x head is warped and lodi g compression (not that it matters seeing as it has 220 psi as is).. I just don't want to do anymore damage to the bike it's been parked since I discovered this issue

I'm ok with that I run a 5°advance on it anyways for slightly better top end..

.

How do you know it is warped?

If it is not warped too much you can surface it yourself on a granite countertop or a flat machined surface like a table saw etc.

If it is warped too much to do by hand or you don't have any rich friends with granite countertops their ol' ladys will let you use, you can get it surfaced at some automotive machine shops or regular machine shops that have a large table belt sander. This will cost far less than milling it flat.

...it has 220 psi...

I wouldn't trust a stock type gasket with that much compression if that is what you are using and would consider getting a high performance one like MLS or copper. Cometic is one of a few companies that can make them.

1. clean the gasket surface sealing area with lacquer thinner.

2. color surface with a black felt pen.

3. place a piece of 400 grit sand paper on a granite counter top or polished marble floor tile or window pane (with tape) next to the frame.

4. spray water on the sand paper.

5. place the head on the paper then rotate it around 4 or 5 times then look at it and post a photo of it. if most of the felt marker is gone it is flat enough to be sealed with a gasket.

I would think it might be kinda hard to take the head to a machine shop then too huh?

When you live 200 miles from a machine shop it kinda is

Well then I would pretty much do exactly what I suggested but others might not. :)

I was asked for pictures of the head I have but they wouldnt load in the PM box so I posted them here. The head was dropped and one and a fin was damaged so I took it to a very qualified motor machinest Sam Coe and he tig welded and fixed it perfectly. This head is one of the lowest hour heads you'll find around. It was on the trike for almost 2 yrs then removed so the XR 500 head could be installed. Ive had it stored ever sense. Im the original owner on this head. The trike was running perfectly when it was removed.

Hell, the fact that Sam and you have touched it makes it worth what you're asking in celebrity value ! That is a beautiful piece.

Sam does a lot of work for me. I stay in contact with him. He's local. He built the very 1st 350x with a 500xr head on it and sleeved my cylinder with a 500 sleeve back in 1987. He's a mad scientist for sure. This is the head from that motor

I read and heard a 500xr head was a down grade??

Not at all. When theres a 500 sleeve in the cylinder, its a 420cc monster with a stock stroke. Who ever wrote that article your read was dead wrong

ah, ok, you posted while I was replying.

Well, the difference between tulip valves and flat head valves in your bike is probably around 1/3 of a cc, which will increase your compression by a nearly indiscernible amount like maybe 1-2 psi which is insignificant, especially when you already have 220. Also, increasing valve weight is not the right direction to go when building a high perf engine.

If you want more power you need to look in other areas and make large changes but you need to decide if you want more power in the low end range which means increasing the displacement or more power in the high end which means spinning the engine faster.

I'm planning a turbo upgrade as well as a different motor as to not tear up my oem casings..

P.s. my bike is a complete #'s matching bike and is #2804 off the assembly.. or atleast that's the production number I was given when my Vin was read and scanned
