I was browsing craigslist late last week and came across a guy in Tulsa OK who had two boring bars advertised as Van Normans.

After looking at the pictures I could tell one was a Van Norman (the smaller one) and the other was and old Kwik Way model FT.

Both bars had their original tooling kits with them. For what he was selling them for, I don't think you could have bought one tool kit let alone two bars and two kits. It really was a deal.

The seller was old school and kept his word. I contacted him on Friday of last week and he kept them from till last night. So after working Sunday night, then sleeping 2 hours, I made the 12 hour round trip last night and picked them up.

I need to find or make a fixture for single cylinders, but at least now I'll be able to bore just about any cylinder with both of these bars. They need good cleaning, check for true, and a fresh coat of paint, but I'm one step closer to not having to farm out any engine work I do and will be able to bore cylinders for guys.

Ever since John Tice posted his "How it's done" thread, I've wanted to do this. Hopefully this turns out to be a nice little side gig?

Let me know when you're ready for a Tri-Z cylinder with a cracked sleeve.

... and no you may not use it as your practice cylinder, plenty of sacrificial Honda parts out there for that!

Yes Sir. Klemm will get the first one, but I'll save the second one for you as it will be a stock bore. I'm sure you'll have plenty of workshop accessorizing to do before a 2 stroke sleeve job is possible.

I really need to get, or make a fixture table so I can start boring.

Look over John's thread and take some notes. I know he said he didn't do it to his, but I'd strongly recommend getting all the steel used for it stress relived before taking it to a machine shop to get surfaced and I'd also skim every single surface as you never know what you might want to bolt on, or measure off an edge. Stressed steel moves a lot when you machine it and a .001" deviation on your pick up surface translates to a lot more when you bolt something 6" long to it.

Bolting is always better than welding if you plan to add any legs, or other appendages as they can come off, or be replaced with ease. If you do need to weld anything to that table stress reliving is a must.

Talk to Ironchop about this if you have any doubts (or even if you don't), I know about .001% of what he knows about machining.

We have a good metal supply store here, but finding a machine shop to do the work is going to be hard. Most of them hate touching anything one off.

There is a van Norman boring bar on CL close to me, it has tempted me, nlbut I have enough going on and the old lady's dad runs a machine shop, so I'll just keep farming them out! Nice buy!

I was under the impression that a boring bar is a tavern that doesn't serve alcohol.

....and now unexpectedly arriving the hone alone co-star makes his red carpet appearance opening with not one but two highly visible scores making his role in the film a truly delightful and obvious choice. Harvey and Mort, lol. Good show!
